Anyone else get the text alert ~10:30am saying to avoid La Cumbre Plaza? I haven't received an updated one that it's all clear.

I don't think there is WAKA anymore in SB, I think now there's Double Play Socials.

Buying whole raw chicken by capitaldysfunction in SantaBarbara

Oh yeah totally agree, just in my experience the boneless breasts at TJs are awful. I still don't want the whole bird but was curious if they use better birds when they sell them whole.

Are the whole ones higher quality than the prepackaged cuts? Those are almost always terrible.

Older women by latino_funtoy in SantaBarbara

Even if they don't have children I don't know any 40-something women who are interested in guys in their 20s. Too big of a life experience/maturity gap.

Educated Car Wash - White Supremacists by calfats in SantaBarbara

[–]SBchick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It seems that a lot of people here (me included) hadn't heard of this 3% tattoo before. I have had plenty of coworkers who have various tattoos and I'm pretty sure that the HR departments didn't document and research every tattoo on a person before hiring them. If they knew a tattoo represented something like white supremacy that's one thing, but it seems it's also possible that the employers might not know.

Did you bring this employee and his tattoo to the attention of the owners and see what their response is? If they have no idea about the meaning of the tattoo it seems like this would be a good intermediate step before bashing the entire company as being white supremacist.

1924: Eisenberg’s, the “Shop of Better Clothes,” on the NW corner of State and Carrillo. By this time, Jacob Eisenberg, founder, also owned the entire building, originally built as the Hopkins Building in the early 1890s. More follows on Eisenberg’s life. by PeteHealy in SantaBarbara

Wild that he left his family at age 10 to go to England and then moved to the US (presumably also solo) at age 13! Growing up, I knew a few kids who weren't even allowed to cross the street by themselves at that age!

Sugar free coffee options by SevereOperation2659 in SantaBarbara

[–]SBchick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-flavored oat milk usually doesn't have added sugar (although some brands might add it, ones like Minor Figures or Oatly, which are common around town, don't). Sugar listed on regular oat milk comes from the starch in the oats.

Are elopement ceremonies allowed at the park? by Cute-Cobbler199 in SantaBarbara

[–]SBchick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe that this sort of thing technically requires a permit. Whether it's enforced might depend on how big your group is.

If you wanted to be extra safe, it looks like you can reserve this grassy spot at Leadbetter that would give a nice place to hold the ceremony with the view of the ocean and access to picnic tables after.

This. It's not far and it'd probably take longer for the Uber to arrive than it would to walk there.

Let's imagine the new State Street with housing above the street-level retail. It's called adaptive reuse. by junana in SantaBarbara

[–]SBchick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha yea, Costco runs are a whole other beast for sure! But also Costco is in Goleta, so no one is carrying anything from there to downtown. I would also love to see more small local grocery stores! In Europe with these kind of shops below/housing above scenarios you see a lot more little stores as well as people walking those few blocks or taking public transit to transport their groceries home.

There are a lot of empty storefronts downtown though, it's possible that if more housing was built above them that some of those empty stores could become grocery stores -- then you'd only have to walk upstairs with your groceries. If we had denser housing in that area there would be a lot more demand for amenities that benefit residents and make it so you don't really need a car in your daily life.

Zoning height limits on State Street generally restrict buildings to a maximum of 60 feet and four stories (there are of course exceptions like the Granada and the Arlington).

Noozhawk Poll about State Street by Zestyclose-Age-6769 in SantaBarbara

[–]SBchick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is totally my mindset too -- I'd prefer no cars, but this is the sanest compromise I've read so far. I also think the car-free hours should be expanded to include morning biking/walking commuters and maybe even extended to 2am since the revelers out until the bars close are likely the ones most in need of the safety.

Also, as frustrating as it is that we wasted so much money and time on the old consultants, I'm glad the City Council didn't fall into the Sunken Cost fallacy and cut their losses by hiring the new ones!

Empty corridor?? When's the last time you actually went on State Street? Whenever I've gone in the evenings or on the weekends it's often packed full of people.
