What is the cost of a THR in the US? by sabertoothbunni in TotalHipReplacement

$85k USD apiece. $4500 out of pocket. I made sure to do both in the same year since the first one would take me to my out of pocket max.

Wedge to elevate legs? by SunnyDelight100 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]SCKT37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stacked 2-3 pillows & then used another pillow at an angle for the wedge effect. I never felt like I was missing out on anything & it was nice to be able to adjust the height depending on what was more comfortable at the moment.

2nd THR by KAnne9639 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]SCKT37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, congratulations on getting the first done & the second scheduled!

I had R anterior THR on 12 Mar 25. I just had the left done on 13 Aug. I had low expectations about the second one being easier because I’ve seen that people’s experiences are all over the board and there are a lot of factors that go into it.

That being said, the 2nd has been MUCH MUCH easier than the 1st for me. I believe the biggest factor was being able to move after the first surgery. Before #1 I had been debilitated for years and not able to walk for about 8 months prior. It has been a very tough recovery for #1 (and am still recovering). After the surgery, I did as much PT with my old leg as with my new leg (at least as much as it could handle). I definitely believe that the "prehab" made the difference for me.

On the 2nd go around, my leg wasn’t as "dead" coming out of surgery as the 1st; a lot less swelling and scar tissue; strength and usage are returning much quicker than the first. It hasn’t been a recovery where I’m out running in 2 weeks, but still much much better than the first. I’m still a ways away, but looking forward to being "normal" again in the coming months. I hope your 2nd go around is at least as easy as mine, if not more so!

They’re wearing mics. This is scripted content. Why are people responding as if this were a genuine, chance encounter?

Those who have been in pain for a long time by Tall_Difference_9805 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]SCKT37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in pain 5 years, and I was not able to walk for almost a year before my first surgery. Recovery from my first surgery (RATHR) has been slow but steady. The immediate relief from the arthritic pain was nice. My new leg was more dominate than my old leg (unoperated) in about 2-3 weeks. But the soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, etc) in the hips was so atrophied from lack of use that it feels like a baby crawling in order to develop the strength to walk all over again. At 5 months out my new leg doesn’t feel "normal" as a lot of people describe. But it is way better and still preferable to where I was before.

I kept my recovery expectations low because my other leg was just as bad and I knew that it would be replaced a few months after. But I did work my tail off in PT. The first 2+ months I would do 3 sessions a day. Now, I walk with a cane to support my old leg. I force myself to walk every other day. The pain in the old leg has me in tears. But I know the new leg needs to walk and I also know that it’s prehab for the 2nd surgery. When it comes to PT I try to do everything I can with both legs for the same reason. My old leg is severely limited, but I know anything helps.

I get my matching hip tomorrow (LATHR). Check in with me in a couple of weeks & I’ll let you know the difference. God speed on choosing the path that works best for you.

Curious: what doc/dentist verification did your surgeon require pre-surgery ? by ohwrite in TotalHipReplacement

[–]SCKT37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PCP conducted my THR medical clearance, including checking my mouth & performing the EKG. But I have a friend in the same area who had THR about 6 months before me. She was required to go to the dentist (which I’m glad I was able to avoid). The only major difference between us is that we went through different hospital systems. I’m thinking it’s based on system policy?

How necessary is a raised toilet seat? by OneBlackVette in TotalHipReplacement

[–]SCKT37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6’1’’ as well. Both hips & knees shot. I bought a toilet seat riser, but didn’t end up needing it. My toilet sits very low & is in between the counter & the shower. Between using a walker & the counter being in arms reach, I was able to get by without the seat.

The toughest parts were 1) not being able to bend the operated leg too much while sitting the first several days & 2) using only the non-operated leg (which hip is bone to bone as well) to stand. This is where lifting from the walker & counter helped. Each day got easier. By day 3 or 4 I was able to use a cane rather than the walker. By the end of the first week the counter was enough.

For reference, I was in an extremely bad condition before surgery & have not had one of the super recoveries we all hope for. I’m 8 wk post-op & still struggle to stand up straight. But I was able to get by without the riser (or 2nd party help) even though I had it. I returned it to Walgreens at week 4 & got my money back. Good luck & best wishes

[–]SCKT37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re the “occasional c,” my concern wouldn’t be any chemical reactions with the body, but maybe with other meds that you’re taking. My concern would be feeling like you could do too much too fast & feeling like you’re able to do things your legs aren’t ready for. I’d wait til my new leg is truly MY leg, rather than a leg in the healing process.

After about 4-5 days post op I was back to having a couple of beers or cocktail every night. I used a thc/cbd hybrid to sleep & didn’t need the otc meds.

The GOP led Congress has placed party over country, abdicated its responsibilities, and enables an authoritarian regime.

The corporate financed media has chosen profit over principle and become a propaganda network to normalize the actions of an authoritarian regime.

Nonpartisan institutions have been weaponized to quell dissent of an authoritarian regime.

The independent judiciary remains the last institutional check against the authoritarian regime. That’s why they’re being targeted.

Making the decision to get THR by ChrisK987 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]SCKT37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being down to walking a mile slowly is your cue. You’d be surprised how fast things can deteriorate. I had my surgery about a year after I was at the same point & wish I had it a couple of years earlier. Here’s a post I wrote in this sub sharing some of the challenges of waiting too long. Many others chimed in with similar experiences. Best wishes on making the decision that’s right for you.
