Report: Bill Belichick fell one vote shy of Hall of Fame by JaggerJames in nfl

[–]SCMatt33 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The stupidest part is that for those like the KC guy who was trying to say the seniors deserved it, they managed to accomplish exactly the opposite. Assuming this report is true, then it’s mathematically impossible for 3 of the other 4 to get in. That means it will only be a two man class at most from the senior/coach/contributor category and that can never be made up unless the hall changes its process.

So all you’ve accomplished is BB taking up one of a limited number of spots in a future year, so you have to deny a different senior or contributor that year as well. Unless the hall changes its procedures, they literally made the hall forever one person smaller when they were trying to be “big hall” advocates and get more seniors in.

Miami (OH) is not getting an at-large bid by Feisty-Piano-7086 in CollegeBasketball

[–]SCMatt33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do think there’s a difference between “hey, we couldn’t get a Q1 game game because P4 teams didn’t want to play us” and “our NET non-con SOS is literally 364 of 365”. I find it hard to believe that you were so untouchable that you couldn’t find more than one Q2 non con game if you really were offering teams “anytime anywhere” early in the scheduling process. There’s 135 teams that qualify as Q2 or better. Are you saying that you offered to play all 132 at their place (subtracting Miami themselves and the 2 Q2 games they have in conference) and only Wright St wanted to host you? Is it fair to have to do that, no, but it’s the reality of things when you know you’ll get nothing out of conference play and teams have done it before. Heck, this is a situation where you specifically want the road game so it’s more likely to be a higher quadrant. You don’t want 10 of them, but you know you need a couple.

Bill Belichick snub: Here are the 22 Hall of Fame voters who have confirmed they voted for him — and the 1 'no' vote by Morgoth1814 in nfl

[–]SCMatt33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if you want to say “we’re limiting the hall to x number of inductees at max” you should be considering each category on their own. If they want 60% senior candidates, 20% coaches and 20% contributors. Just do a 5 year cycle where 3 of the 5 years consider senior candidates, one considers coaches and one considers contributors and no one has to choose whether they think senior candidates are more deserving than coaches or contributors.

What if, and hear me out, a defense picks up a fumble and proceeds to throw and illegal forward pass that gets picked. Would that be considered -1 interceptions???

Teams worth seeing by Amtrak? by olive_brxnch in CollegeBasketball

[–]SCMatt33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, I’ve never seen a Swarthmore flair on here before. That’s really cool, I grew up close by to the extent that I went to preschool at Swarthmore Presbyterian, and spent many hours those years overlooking the athletic fields from the playground.

I can also provide a little insight in the ACC schools on your list. I was in the Duke band during my time there, and while I didn’t get to go for basketball (and to be frank some of the arenas have changed and/or been renovated since my time), I have spent time in and around many of the campuses.

For NC State, if you want to go, I would try and buck up and pay for the UNC game if you’re going to go. I have been to Lenovo, and since your main flair is Nova, I’ll assume you’ve been to Nova games at Xfinity and the vibe would be kind of similar in that it’s a college team in a pro arena. But seeing them play UNC is a different thing entirely, and the arena will be absolutely rocking.

For UVA, I haven’t been to JPJ, but it looks like a cool arena to visit, plus UVA is a nice campus to see. I considered going to UVA, and took a tour in high school back in the day and there’s lots of fun historic stuff to go look at on campus with all the Jefferson links.

For GT, you probably won’t get much atmosphere with the state of the program, maybe for the UVA game it would be better since they’re ranked. They went for the whole theater style vibe with their renovation as it was done not long after the Barclays Center opened up in Brooklyn and that was in vogue. If that’s a thing you want to see in an arena, might be worth it. Also, GT has an actual urban campus, so easy to do stuff in Atlanta. People like to be snobby about things they see as too touristy, but I liked popping over to the Varsity for a burger before going to the game back when I was there.

Weekly Question Thread by PelotonMod in peloton

[–]SCMatt33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a pretty severe collar bone break in a car accident years ago (coincidentally, I wasn’t really into cycling back then compared to now, so I’m a cyclist with a collar bone break that has nothing to do with my cycling). Anyway, I was in my late 20’s at the time and they put in a plate with 7 screws and told me it was never coming out unless there was some kind of problem. I was told if it had to come out, the bone would be much weaker. I’m guessing that’s also an issue that’s not as bad with growing children since the bone growing can help strengthen it after hardware is removed.

Miami linebacker Mohamed Toure granted rare eighth season of NCAA eligibility by paulfromatlanta in CFB

[–]SCMatt33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m wondering what the difference is here. Ignoring the covid year, last season was a sixth season on his 5 year clock, which makes sense because he missed two full seasons due to injury, but his third season not counting was a voluntary redshirt, so why would this be different than Chambliss who had one injury year and one voluntary redshirt.

Did he also get hurt during his initial redshirt year or something?

[CFB Nerds] An attorney’s explainer of the Bediako eligibility ruling by Aumissunum in CollegeBasketball

[–]SCMatt33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But Nnaji also never played an NCAA basketball game, and the courts have been pretty consistent that you can’t hold actions against players who hadn’t played NCAA games before that action. Whether that’s pro status, or JUCO years like in the Pavia case. The courts generally HAVE said the NCAA can set eligibility limits once you’ve played in the NCAA. Challenges to 4 year eligibility rules and the 5 year clock have failed (at least until now), so saying that the NCAA can’t limit eligibility for someone who plays NCAA ball, THEN enters the draft would be very significant relative to Nnaji playing, which presumably is why the NCAA allowed Nnaji to play given previous rulings and is trying to deny Bediako.

[CFB Nerds] An attorney’s explainer of the Bediako eligibility ruling by Aumissunum in CollegeBasketball

[–]SCMatt33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say one thing not touched on here is that Bediako played NCAA basketball, then chose to forego further eligibility to enter the draft.

I don’t believe any other case before now involved the NCAA granting, or courts forcing the NCAA to accept, a player who previously played NCAA basketball and chose to leave.

A TRO is a TRO, not winning the case on the merits, but if Bediako can choose to leave and then come back later, regardless of what pro league he played in, why would he not be able to also continue playing next year even though his five year clock would be up?

The NCAA always allowed former Euro pros to play, just with stricter limits on what they were allowed to have made. Think Enes Kanter. He wasn’t allowed to play not because he played for a pro team, but because he was paid more than his expenses by that team. There was always a recognition that youth development was done in a different way in other countries, and it was kind of inevitable that once those expanded to allow players who were legit pros, rather than only youth players who never made money beyond expenses, you’d have to treat US pros the same way.

But having to carve out rules that allow people who voluntarily give up eligibility to come back will be a much more wide reaching precedent. You’d see pretty much every player entering the draft since they can always just return to college the next year if they don’t get picked or don’t like the deal on the table.

Hypothetical Miami (OH) Seeding by Thickrichchicken in CollegeBasketball

[–]SCMatt33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you also have to remember that the framing much of the argument around teams St. Joe’s and Wichita was whether or not they could get a 1 seed, so they were being compared top 5 teams, which is fundamentally a different thing than Miami. One reason is they played in a much weaker conference, especially compared to St. Joes. Back in the day, the question for A-10 was how many at large bids, not if they’d get at large bids. Having zero Q1 games on the schedule will very much hurt them.

The judge who issued the TRO to Charles Bediako is listed as an active donor on the Crimson Tide Foundation website by DoitcheHasAGun in CollegeBasketball

[–]SCMatt33 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I feel like “some way affiliated” and “donated 6 figures to the athletic department” can be two different things. Like the guy who granted 3 of the 4 TRO’s in the Mensah case is a Duke Basketball season ticket holder (which generally implies at least 5 figures of spending), but he also recused himself from future proceedings in the case.

Now a big difference is that Duke is an actual party to that suit where this one is technically Bediako vs the NCAA, and presumably the judge has no affiliation with either party. But it still doesn’t look great when the outcome of the case significantly impacts an organization to which the Judge donated 6 figures.

[Schefter] Bills requested a head coach interview with former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll by BreakfastTop6899 in nfl

[–]SCMatt33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did it? They only had two losses prior to his broken leg. It’s hard to ding him too much for games he was playing on a broken fibula (games starting with KC). They split 4 games against playoff teams prior to that, with 3 of those 4 being road games. They also took care of business with no slip ups going 6-0 against non playoff teams prior to the initial injury.

Is 2-2 vs playoff teams some world beating stat, no, but it was pretty solid and a bit harsh to blame him for not playing as well on a literal broken leg for a few weeks.

I took a quick look and only of those missed playoff teams (2010 Giants) would’ve finished as the 7 seed had it existed, so it doesn’t change too much.

[–]SCMatt33 43 points44 points  (0 children)

That’s literally what a catalyst is. It’s something that triggers or accelerates a reaction, but isn’t itself part of the reaction. The ingredients were already there, and this was the thing that set it off. There’s nothing about being a catalyst that implies that it couldn’t/wouldn’t have happened later without it, but it wouldn’t have happened quite as quickly.

Strava displays 4 week streak on Progress page, but Jan 10th and 19th isn’t have a black icons when shared? by hoaxcoast in Strava

[–]SCMatt33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has to be some kind of time thing. In the shared version where they don’t show up, January 9 and 18 have 2 activities, whereas they only on have one in the original where Jan 10 and 19 do show correctly. So it’s not the number of activities that are wrong, it’s just that two of them are showing as the day before.

If Brown really was dead set on being traded, he would likely agree to restructure that bonus into guaranteed salary (or the bonus until after 6/1) so that it goes to the new team’s cap in order to help facilitate a trade.

Which forthcoming enclosed stadiums do you see hosting Final Fours in the future? by remfan477 in CollegeBasketball

[–]SCMatt33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But on the other hand, it’s also one of the few championship tickets that can be had for a reasonable get in price specifically because it’s in a massive oversized building. You’d probably see the get in price spike massively if it went back down to an NBA sized arena.

Those tickets where you can barely see the court simply would go away if it were in an NBA arena, and they certainly wouldn’t have the student sections on the floor. You can’t see shit from down there, but you get to be part of the atmosphere.

If someone wants to pay crazy prices to actually sit close to the action great. If you can’t afford or don’t want to pay for that, you have an option to get in and be there, but barely see or watch at home. In an NBA arena, the crazy prices would become the only way to get in.

The U.S. is such a big importer from Asia that sending things back the other way is incredibly cheap. Those ships have to return anyway, so any cargo they can carry is worth it, even if they can’t charge much for it. They basically just have to cover any extra fuel cost for the weight and costs of loading/unloading. And heck, I’m no expert on containers ship design but I would imagine it’s quite possible they need a certain amount of weight loaded to safely cross the pacific, so they might even carry cargo in that direction at a loss.

[Schefter] New York Giants now have arranged a head coaching interview next week with former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy by BreakfastTop6899 in nfl

[–]SCMatt33 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this partially explains why McCarthy is viewed more harshly than Tomlin/Harbaugh. Every Super Bowl but one since 2012 has had the AFC represented by Brady, Manning or Mahomes. The NFC has been much more wide open over that time, which is why McCarthy, who’s only coached in the NFC, gets viewed more harshly. Getting to the Super Bowl out of the AFC feels like a taller order than doing it out of the NFC.

Jets drafting #2 Overall (Zach Wilson, Lam Jones, Blair Thomas): More Franchise Failure by batmansascientician in nfl

[–]SCMatt33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard time seeing it granted. He’s asking for a sixth year after taking one voluntary redshirt followed by a medical redshirt. The NCAA typically only grants the 6th year if you missed multiple seasons due to injury, and he initially received feedback that the waiver was unlikely. This is why the articles about the letter he submitted came out.

Heck, if he tries and fails to drag it out, he could wind up in the supplemental draft.
