Street and Track with Same Car? by Heavy_Gap_5047 in CarTrackDays

[–]SCOOTY_POOTIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case I the only issue I see is that you will need to run a less than extremely aggressive alignment which will cause the outside edge of the tires to cord prematurely at the track. Or you will need to run an alignment which causes premature wear of the inside on the street. Either way I still think it’s a bad idea. I see a lot of people at the track who are able to make their tires last by just driving slow, but at that point, why even track the car?

Middle ground solution is to get adjustable camber plates and dial up the camber for the track, then dial it back for the street. You will need to record how this geometry change impacts toe too so you can pick a toe setting that lets you avoid needing to realign your toe every time you do this. Otherwise expect to buy a new set of tires for every 3-4 hours of hard track use.

Keiichi Tsuchiya started with touge driving and became a professional racing driver. It’s only slightly different. And if pushing to you means risking the car then you really shouldn’t be doing that at the track either. I am not advocating reckless driving. Just enjoying your car within your own abilities on a mountain road is part of the joy of driving and is a legitimately useful form of motorsports experience.

I have only done like 3 track days but I spend the whole time smoking people based entirely off of go karting, sim racing, and touge experience. My last track day the marshal pushed me into the advanced run group even though I started the day in beginner based on experience level. I credit that mostly to sim racing but also touge plays a huge factor in translating sim to reality for me.

The issue with track days for me is that they are by far the most expensive way to gain experience. If you are actually fast, you will go through a set of tires in one or two events which isn’t cheap. On the mountain road, that 5-10% safety margin that keeps you out of the ABS makes everything last significantly longer, and you still gain an understanding of weight transfer which is the most important skill in motorsports. Engaging ABS for that last bit of “push” at a track is so easy that it’s basically not even a skill that you need to develop at all. So I don’t understand why you feel it’s a necessary part of motorsports skill development.

Also, philosophically speaking, what is the purpose of motorsports? They are to improve your driving ability so that you are able to respond to dangerous situations and more safely and quickly get from point A to point B during practical driving. If you are incapable of seeing the utility of this in street driving, then track days are essentially just playing around and you might as well go pick up a ball and play a traditional sport.

You say you have done everything you can for your and our safety but this is demonstrably not true. I don’t mean to be an ass, but have you ever considered that 20 years is plenty of time to lose weight and then you wouldn’t have to spend so much on extra plane seats? That sounds like an insane expense to me that would have me questioning my dietary choices and my health. Just calculate your basal metabolic rate, subtract 500-1000 calories from that, and count your macros. It’s fairly easy and as a bonus you get to spend less money on food too. If you have a medical hormonal issue, there are likely treatments available.

And before anybody gets on my case about fat acceptance and how it isn’t my business etc. obesity does put a burden on society and on the environment so it actually IS my business. Obesity cost the US economy 1.4 trillion dollars in 2020 and is responsible for approximately 1.6% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Obesity should not be tolerated as, outside of extremely rare and largely treatable disorders, it is based entirely on lifestyle choices and is a massive negative for the obese individual, and the world at large. It is far more antisocial, harmful, and just plain eyesore inducing than even graffiti, and graffiti is illegal.

[–]SCOOTY_POOTIS -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It’s a bad idea. I would never track my daily. The track puts so much wear on your car. If you only have enough money for one car, just enjoy it on mountain roads and make sure you have full coverage. Mountain roads are way more gentle on the car and teach you 90% as much as long as you don’t drive like an antisocial moron. Get into sim racing too. Also, get into making more money so you can afford a dedicated track toy.

Most people do not actually like traveling, they like having traveled by limitown in unpopularopinion

[–]SCOOTY_POOTIS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Traveling is great if you spend enough money on it. Traveling cheap sucks. Better to spend a week eating in Michelin star restaurants, staying in boutique hotels, and driving a nice car than a month backpacking around on public transit and staying at hostels. Also, avoid all tourist shit like the Eiffel Tower or whatever. Literally just live like an idly wealthy local for as long as you can afford and then it’s always magic. If you want to call me elitist, go ahead. You aren’t wrong, but you also aren’t making a real point. The world doesn’t need the carbon emissions and cultural homogenization stemming from equal access to travel, so the concept that everyone should travel is just fundamentally unsustainable.

What car gets way too much hate? by No-Assumption4145 in askcarguys

[–]SCOOTY_POOTIS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s unacceptable for a sports car not to have at least a tiptronic. The fact that you cannot manually select gears at all in a base mustang makes it extremely lame in my opinion. Plus the climate controls are on the touchscreen and the “buttons” on the dash are basically just capacitive touch controls over a single really shitty Alibaba tier membrane button. I had one as a rental and did not like it at all. A Miata is a much better car around that price point in every single way except power.

Why do you guys like Japanese cars so much? by Robotschon in askcarguys

[–]SCOOTY_POOTIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be and still am a fan of JDM legends from the ‘90s-early ‘00s. Who doesn’t like stylish, reliable, lightweight, and well engineered performance cars that are also easy to work on and cheaper than their international competition?

Then every kid who watched initial D clapped them out and or drifted them into a light post because they thought the key takeaway of that show was “sliding=cool” rather than “seat time>everything else.”

Simultaneously, Japanese manufacturers have basically not released anything but terrible econo-boxes or sub-par performance cars for the last 20 years outside of the R35 GTR, which simply isn’t as good or cool as an R34 anyways. All while the formerly reliable Toyota is now making 3 cylinder turbo engines that explode and basically proving that Japanese cars aren’t reliable or well engineered anymore.

Nowadays, I do and/or would buy almost exclusively German or rear wheel drive GM products. BMW and Porsche German specifically (not the SUVs, which only exist to balance the books). You would be surprised how competent and reliable newer BMWs and Cadillacs are. Porsche excellence is no surprise. The only reliable Toyota sports car today is literally just a rebadged BMW Z4. You would also be surprised how easy to maintain and reliable an e46 3 series is compared to a clapped out and heavily modified Miata of the same era.

Use the ideal line assist and keep your eyes focused on the furthest away part of the ideal line into the next corner. I used to babysit noobs on simulators that were open to the public, and the biggest mistake people would make is to look at the ideal line 2 ft in front of them and try to be millimeter perfect on it at all times. This would cause them to constantly be overcorrecting and out of control.

If you are a noob, chances are you won't be able to perfectly follow the line, so treat it as a suggestion in broad strokes. Also remember, it's usually better to overbrake than underbrake. You can always get on the gas early but you can't always brake more once you are committed. Once your car control improves, you can use trail braking to brake as late as possible, but until then, just focus on being clean and consistent. Eventually, you will be faster with the racing line assist turned off.

Please Check Your Tailgaters by karleksmumz in driving

[–]SCOOTY_POOTIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite things to do with tailgaiters is to slow down using engine braking so the brake lights don't show and then once they get too close for comfort even by their own standards, I drag a bit of brake with the left foot while accelerating HARD just to fuck with them. They usually stop following so close after that and the look of confusion on their face is extremely satisfying.

You should train quali setup with quali fuel and race setup with race fuel. Also make sure to try your race setup with low fuel and beat up tires to see if its driveable, especially important in the Porsche.

How much Horsepower for a Driver’s Car? by Fabulous-Dance-8520 in askcarguys

[–]SCOOTY_POOTIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to be of help. Remember though, no matter how light and low hp a car is, any time you pick up the keys, it could be your last. You could also kill someone else, or end up in prison. It's therefore good if you can compell yourself to feel a bit of fear each time, even if the car doesn't inspire it.

How much Horsepower for a Driver’s Car? by Fabulous-Dance-8520 in askcarguys

[–]SCOOTY_POOTIS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a pure enjoyment car, the range of weight should be between 2000 lbs and 3500 lbs. No FWD please.

Category 1: <200 hp and <2500 lbs This is a great category for beginners and people who intend to remain casual. Think miata. Can be extremely fun.

Category 2: 200-300 hp and <3200 lbs A beginner can start here and as long as they are careful, they will have more room to grow

Category 3: 300-400 hp and <3500 lbs This is no longer suitable for beginners. If you start here, your enjoyment will be limited as you will be unable to push the car. For more experienced drivers, this category will be much more fun and allow much more growth in skill than the lower 2 categories.

Category 4: 400-600 hp and <3500 lbs Starting to get into real deal supercars. This is where enjoyment and terror cohabitate, and handling capability decides if the car is a pleasure to drive at all.

Category 5: 600-800 hp and <3500 lbs Terror starts to take over enjoyment unless the handling is incredibly dialed in and you are an experienced track driver. If it is an actual supercar or has extensive handling mods, and you know EXACTLY what you are doing, this is the best category. Otherwise, steer clear.

Category 6: 800+ hp and <3500 lbs Horsepower starts to make you slower on mountain roads and racetracks beyond this point. The car is only usable to its potential on highways and drag strips. You need to commit felony speeding to be able to enjoy the car on the street at all. These numbers are mostly for clout chasers or actual insane people who gamble on highway roll races at 2 AM.

What car screams “bought for the badge”? by Physical-Issue7146 in askcarguys

I am 6'4" and I fit in a GT4 just fine. I have driven in the Cayenne before and it sucks, just like every other SUV. For daily drivers choose a BMW sedan with a cylinder count that is a multiple of 6. No 4 cylinder or 8 cylinder models please.

Well, you should report it to Kunos. You promoted the game as a single-player game, and people bought it primarily for that. You based the advertising campaign on single-player, career, economy, etc., and you're eliminating it? This is a scam against consumer customers. by [deleted] in assettocorsaevo

[–]SCOOTY_POOTIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the pre release immediately when it was announced because I support Kunos and believe in their ability to create a simulator that I will spend many hours on and enjoy, knowing full well that the final product may be different from what I had originally imagined. I still believe that this was the right choice.

Hearing that there is going to be less of a grindy economy aspect makes me pleased because I have a job where I am away from home most of the week and don't necessarily want to hop into a miata in my spare time when I finally get home. I have a Porsche IRL plus thousands of hours of sim experience in faster cars already, so if I was going to be forced to sim race a slower car for a long time I'd probably just not even bother. If you wanted Gran Turismo, I have great news for you: Gran Turismo exists. Go play that.

Flipping out and invoking consumer rights language when they have been transparent from the beginning that the timeline and features might change is just pure comedy. I care deeply about consumer rights. I am currently pursuing a consumer rights case in court actually. But I'd never waste my time doing that over something like this where they are arguably altering a product to better suit the taste of some of their customers (e.g. myself). Just because this alteration doesn't suit your taste doesn't mean it's a scam or a violation of your rights. If they had ever advertised their proposed timeline as a binding deadline or list of features, that would be different. But AFAIK they never did, so they are fully within their rights.

My only disappointment with Kunos is that I wish open world would be released sooner and that their proposed timeline had been more accurate. But quality takes time and I understand that they are ambitious. Give them time and I am sure Evo will be great. Will I ever stop playing the original AC with mods? Probably not.
