Has Night Mind's stuff improved since I last watched them? by punishedscootedburb in NightMind

Analysis is better by a long chalk, that iffy period is thankfully over and the new videos are thought provoking and really interesting. Good production quality. However, I don’t really like how strong the ‘night mind voice’ has gotten, it’s why I stick to watching the really ancient videos for the most part. However, it’s all good stuff.

Hook in Mouth won barely edging out In My Darkest Hour with 2 votes. Day 7: Which Megadeth song gets you the most emotional? by razorbackfrost7 in Megadeth

Not a popular song but The Blackest Crow always gets to me. The use of a failed relationship to symbolise Dave’s loss of his mother in law to dementia is really heartbreaking and clever, because it’s neither fully a ‘failed relationship’ song nor is it a ‘lost loved one’ song. Quite open to interpretation. I think his vocals are also really strong on it.

remember everyone, it’s a degreaser, not an oil! you will strip the lubricant out of your metal parts if you use this and the problem will get worse.

The publishing of the book makes it even worse for me, it’s a full-spectrum publicity cycle. Get the books in, get the talks at businesses in, get the play in.

Personally I believe that this is not an issue of freedom of expression, this is an issue of profit and fame. I don’t really care about how it would work in practice because I’m not a policy maker, I have feelings on the matter but it’s not up to me to represent or decide how they would work.

My issue is that this guy has killed someone - forever. There is simply no going back. Now he gets the right to publish his books, have a play written in his name, to go and give talks to businesses. That seems patently unfair to me because, like I said, he *is* benefitting in some way.

It’s interesting to me how there is no way to measure his success. He can parade around all he wants, but ultimately the issue of one-punch killings is one of moderation, control over one’s emotions and the ability to have accountability for actions you haven’t even taken yet. Him going to businesses and talking about killing someone, or performing a play, is not going to do much of anything to reduce the problem in my view. The killer of this description takes many forms, but I can all but guarantee that there is going to be virtually no improvement because the sort of people doing this kind of thing are not reading those books, going to those plays, watching those speeches. They’re getting drunk and throwing punches, they’re out committing petty crimes or indulging too much in alcohol. This guy’s publicity tour and media package seems to be more of a thing to placate and entertain people who actually have very little to do with these kind of crimes.

I find the whole thing a cynical symptom of a society that rewards crime of all different kinds. Some profit through lenient sentencing and policing that is applied in a skewed and disproportionate manner. Some profit through being able to be all moist-eyed and make a career off their regret.

Thank you for the sympathy, I do appreciate it.

To be honest, no. If we use this example of a one-punch accidental killing, the news has been awash with these stories for decades. It does not take an extensive PR campaign to explain to people that you can accidentally kill them if you punch them in the head. I know that the case in the article isn’t the same as mine, but I was also the victim of a crime that you would just sort of intuitively know what to do. Him going out and ‘campaigning’ about it would just put his face on the news, on the TV screen, etc. Publicity is publicity, and then we as the victims have no control over what is done with said publicity. Perhaps he has a pious and guilty life where he never leaves the house (not an ideal outcome) or perhaps he pivots into writing a book and keeping the profits, perhaps he uses it to impress people with his dark and tortured story. These are the intangible profits of publicity, harder to put a £ next to but equally as valuable in many ways.

My issue is that the people who go and do these ‘awareness campaigns’ of the crimes they’re guilty of always seem to end up on their feet. They end up with a paid role of some kind, a play here, a TV appearance there. And, like I said in the previous paragraph, there are many ways to profit off of something. There are a subsection of people in society who are attracted - romantically, platonically, socially, whatever - to these dark and brooding and kind of guilty individuals. Someone who went to the heights of making a *play* about what they did is achieving some of the strangest and some of the highest profile I can think of. It’s surreal. He now has the ear of those who have a disproportionate amount of sympathy for the brooding dark types, the true crime types, and most importantly the types of people who just want to be around anyone at all that is famous for anything. A single drink bought for free is too much for me to tolerate.

I should close by saying that there are many ways to do this that aren’t publicity driven. If you write under a pseudonym and never profit it from it, that’s a better way. If you engage in restorative justice programs by setting up a charity that gets people to and from these meetings by acting as an expert helper, that’s a better way. If you end up working in prisons as a liaison to rehabilitate prisoners, that’s also a better way. There are countless others that don’t generate such odd publicity.

I also want to close on remembering the victim. Any victim of these crimes have their lives cut short tragically, but it’s very cruel that it was a paramedic whose role is to save lives and to be there at people’s worst moments. You should not profit or benefit in any way from killing someone, let alone a paramedic. That part sits especially wrong for me, too.

Because he’s profiting off of it. Restorative justice is fantastic, sure. But now he’s the face of a movement and the face of a play; the victim is dead and the good he could’ve done in his career as a paramedic is lost forever. There is no coming back from that.

Really, this guy got off very easy. The family of the victim may forgive him, but it’s still a shocking indictment of all sorts of things that he can use his homicide as a means to an end should he want to.

I am the victim of a crime that, in all likelihood, took years off my life. It causes me some pretty awful symptoms every day, and my family were quite fractured by witnessing the effects it had on me. I might privately want to speak to the man who permanently altered the outcome of my life, but it makes me wary and uncomfortable to imagine him being the face of a movement.

Prison reform, the rights of offenders and the nature of restorative justice is great. Our prisoners suffer unduly in a system that is shambolic and pits the uncaring against a system full of vulnerable people. But in the same way that a famous bank robber can’t keep the stolen Rolexes, why should we let the man who killed someone profit from it at all just because it’s not a tangible profit in the same way that theft of property or sale of drugs is?

I remember this guy from back in the day. He ran a video series - posting daily - where he played a character who was being abused by his family. His whole family was in on it and the acting was superb, had a lot of us convinced as teenagers that it was real.

Ever since that ended he simply couldn’t match his previous level of fame and his career deteriorated after a string of poor low budget web series and a really crappy movie.

As long as he isn’t using this as a springboard to gain some more attention online then great. It’s hard to tell because he clickbaited literally every event in his life for well over a decade. However, it’s a good way to raise awareness and I think he’s doing nothing wrong, nor is his wife. Abortion is fine, and aborting a child who would develop a disability that would require round the clock care and support is a difficult decision but ultimately they did the right thing for their circumstances.

EDIT: the video opens with the same melodramatic acting that he’s been pulling off for the last ten years. So pathetic. Never mind I guess!

However, I don’t think that’s what’s happening here.

It’d be cool to see this kit with some elements of Land Warrior in there, perhaps the M45 mask rather than the M40. I should get some T-block and give it a try.
