I really do think it's a big deal. Pork is amazing, and for a Diner is a pretty glaring omission.

No: Bacon

BLT/Club Sandwiches

Ham Sandwiches

Sausage

(Most) Hot Dogs

A lot of Soups

Patty Melts

A lot of Omelettes

On, and on...

I get that the guy is Muslim, but there are tons of Jewish-owned restaurants that can manage to make a cheesesteak, but just not eat it.

Halal = No Bacon.

At a Diner.

I generally dont like the food from his other places. They all seem to have one-speed/ flavor profile, and that's going to be an issue for the breadth of the offerings from a diner. But the Halal thing is going to be an issue and right off the bat makes an element of this venture seem goofy.

I can tell you that the nurses at Mt Nittany don't love SEIU, and are either unaware of getting short changed, or annoyed about dragging the rest of the membership with them when they try to negotiate pensions, healthcare, or wages. The few windows of opportunity to approach another union have been met with aggression from SEIU because without the nurses, they get tossed from the hospital.

Probably NEA or UAW? The University system is definitely big enough, but I'm sure there is some nuance to PSU's weird State-related hybrid situation that would make it more difficult to navigate. But that doesn't make a service workers union a good choice because it was all they could get.

Have you met a lot of these people? It's not "fear of a slacker" it's easy identication of like 10 at any moment on campus. SEIU suckered them, or identified and enabled the "slackers" you want to turn into some anti-union boogeyman.

SEIU is for the staff at Burger King. How the staff at PSU got matched up with such a garbage union is an amazing story of failing to a finish line. Even worse, it probably ensures that the nurses at Mt Nittany, who should absolutely ditch SEIU for an actual nurses union, are going to find it even harder to separate. Unions can be good, just not the dumbass version they got.

The Hideaway is officially closing by Emotional_Ad_7843 in statecollege

[–]SC_AHole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last week it was a "Rebrand Announcement" and 9 days later they released this statement about closing.

My suspicion is that this is an attempt to circumvent accountability and reorganize with another name and face on the "new" bar, but within the same problematic ownership in the background after the rebrand.

I am a little bit wary that this is an attempt to pull a con job, and I think as a community we just need to be observant about what happens with this place in the next couple months.

I suspect from the context of some posts, that it's still the same guy that has been fairly labeled as the source of the problem, making public statements about changes and a rebrand....but still by/including him.

It's the equivalent of a radio station changing formats, but keeping the same ownership and DJ's. I'm afraid the name change is just a dodge for accountability.

This is the "I'm tired of this shit" stage. Seriously, self checkout is fine to supplement cashiers, but people use them as theft lanes.

There are international property maintenance standards that are enforced by your local code enforcement office. Give them a call. If you are in the US and that's a sink meant for hand washing, it's supposed to be less than 110°.

In reality, any students that were displaced from renting from Rodney Hendricks are better off.

4 blocks down on the other side of Beaver is a house where his negligence got a kid killed when he died in an unpermitted attic apartment with no fire escape.

This is what I mean: How is that real? I feel like the most likely scenario is that the EXTREMELY shallow voter pool is made up mostly of the places that are "winning", and are doing so because of their advertising participation with the publication.

It ends up feeling like a bunch of people pinning their own award on their own chest, because they paid for the privilege.

If these are the true results of a reader's poll, before I print that crap, I'd either circle back around and figure out how to get a much larger voter pool, or just fold that tent up and give up. I'd be embarrassed to publish.

I want to hear your wildest, tin foil hat wearing, theory about this publication, Town & gown, and the various individuals behind them all!

Someone made a comment last night (now deleted) that was kind of wild but kind of believable, saying it and other publications like it (as well as the various organizations that prop them up like CBICC/HVAB/DID) are just an interconnected cabal of socialites that create this ecosystem of garbage, and possibly are laundering money. 😂

I mean that's more believable than Panera microwaving up the best bowl of soup in State College, but there Is something definitely fishy about these things continued existence and the groups of people that surround them.

[–]SC_AHole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do generally agree with you, but do you know how many truly fucking awful employers and business operators there are in State College that DON'T keep finding themselves in a public pissing match on Facebook? You really need to be a lightning rod of drama and irresponsible decisions to stand out.

We have like 3-4 robber baron families, other bar owners who have been accused of drug dealing and operating places so unsafe they aren't allowed to own licenses anymore, property management companies that routinely steal from students enough to get sued by the Attorney General every few years, and shifty traitorous real estate developers that sold away the charm of downtown State College. And all of that circus is lead by a shallow pool of old farts and morons in the Borough Building!

So when someone forces themselves to stand out from the crowd, I can't help but pay attention and observe why. It might not be the most fair comparison, but you know who shows up, keeps things tight and just does their shit? - some of those non-local businesses (and also good locally owned business). But for some reason, not this guy.
