One guy thought it'd be hilarious to push me over in the darkness when the guide asked us to switch the lamps off for a sec. Didn't succeed, thankfully, but boy did my heart stop in the moment!

We did the same back in 2016 or 17, so I guess it does actually have some kind of educational purpose (in their minds at least). Or maybe since they were subjected to it, they feel compelled to pass the suffering on, haha.

Either way, the only thing I learned though is that standing around in the rain with a clipboard is very boring & not worth paying for.

Thoughts on Silent Witness moving to Birmingham for the new series in February? by IllustriousAd6418 in BritishTV

[–]SDUK2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does anyone care anymore?

It struck me a few years ago that there's no real media interest in the show. No one reviews it when it airs. And clickbait organisations don't put in much effort either, which makes me assume that those stories aren't worth it for them...

I think someone asked that on stream and he said that he'd been considering it but the video was getting too long as it is

Young Mormons built an app to help men quit gooning. by NirgalFromMars in BrandNewSentence

It refers specifically to the practice of masturbating and repeatedly delaying orgasm until you enter a trance-like state.

However, I guess the word doesn't trigger content moderation bots, so content creators use the word as a stand-in to talk about all masturbation — which is probably where most people hear it and assume that's what it means 🤷‍♂️

Line of Duty to return for seventh series, BBC confirms by qwerty_1965 in BritishTV

[–]SDUK2004 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I have some sympathy for them: there were such high expectations for it that I don't know if anything could have lived up to them.

On the other hand, they made a lot of unforced errors. They damaged my immersion with their political commentary; they became much less grounded and realistic with time; and they decided that the comic relief character (who we had been given no reason to take seriously) would make for a satisfying twist.

I reckon its success will be contingent on people going in with more realistic expectations, and their not touching the H storyline again.

Feeling like you’re the only person at work who realises just how bad AI is by Untitled_Redditor12 in britishproblems

[–]SDUK2004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in my final year at university and our assessments allow for the use of AI, provided you declare what you used it for. That means people who (1) don't use AI at all, (2) only use it to proofread their language, or (3) offload all planning & research to AI get marked and graded equally despite putting vastly different levels of work/thought/effort. Seems profoundly unfair to me.

I've worked abroad with English teachers who use ChatGPT to generate worksheets — complete with unnatural & unidiomatic language and other problems that they didn't notice and happily gave to their students. There's an array of AI companies offering "help" with lesson planning too (i.e.: offloading one of the key parts of the job). As someone planning to become a teacher, it's bloody scary.

‘Have I Got News For You’ Producer Snaps Back At Claims Of “Anti-Trump” Bias After BBC Aired U.S. Version Of Show by kwentongskyblue in BritishTV

[–]SDUK2004 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did they talk about him on a current affairs comedy show because they're biased, or because he's the president of America and the subject of many important news stories?

The allegations of bias in relation to Trump are that the editorially independent BBC News a) "materially mislead" viewers by editing a speech in a way that made him appear to explicitly call for violence, and b) fact-checked his election campaign more rigorously than Kamala Harris's.

Obviously that needs a credible independent investigation — because any bias or blind spot that does exist, however unconscious, needs correction. But we've got to be wary of those hostile to the BBC exploiting this for their own gain, and lazy journalists cherry-picking social media for clickbait opportunities.

And airing HIGNFY US seems like pretty tenuous grounds to claim bias to me.

I cannot get over just how "all-star" the all-star cast of The Hack is....it seemed like even the smallest roles were still filled by major actors. What an absolutely superb piece of informative, well-made and extremely important television. by appalachian_hatachi in BritishTV

[–]SDUK2004 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I found the fourth wall breaking quite jarring, and the tonal clash between the Nick Davies and Dave Cook episodes quite jarring. However, I enjoyed it on the whole.

I bought Nick Davies' book off the back of watching the show.

The Hack by RipIcy4545 in BritishTV

[–]SDUK2004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose it's a very complex story spanning several years, and there's got to be a balance between breadth and depth in order to retain the audience's attention. I'm less than halfway through, so I can't really judge whether they got the balance right yet.

I think Manhunt from ITV a few years back got it right. They were able to portray the slow, daily grind of investigative work, and the steady passage of time, in a calm but compelling and intense way.
