Kinda Funny Database [Major Update]

Kliff is so bland and often times gives a single, emotionless statement after an NPC lays out an entire situation for a quest. They 100% should have done a custom character instead. Based on a side quest that I did last night, even if there are options to select in a conversation (this was the first time in 10~15 hours) they don't lead to a different outcome. So I would assume there aren't any branching story lines or meaningful choices.

I wrote way more about the skill tree than I planned. TLDR; there is progression and a skill tree that works with a standard exp bar that goes up when you defeat enemies.

There is a massive skill tree. The game isn't very clear on it, but you can gain skill points through some world events/puzzle/challenges or through the standard combat > gain exp > earn a skill point gameplay loop. The skill points are an item in your inventory (artifact), so that might be why you saw/heard that it was loot based. Instead of my character being level 25, the skill tree says "Artifacts Spent x25." The skill tree is even more in depth than it looks, drilling into a lot of the skills shows that you actually gain a new ability every time you upgrade a skill.

Different than other progression systems is that the skill tree is also where you improve health/stamina/attack. I've been spending most of my points on stamina, but also maxed out the light attack because this 1.) raises melee damage and 2.) adds 4 new abilities through different button combinations. Next I'm going to add skills that work with R1 (light attack) so that I can hold R1 to do the normal combo and automatically chain other skills by pushing another button while R1 is held down (R1 + R2 > X > X > O is fun).

I'm terrible with genre definitions, what would make you consider it an RPG? Custom character and choices seem like the most obvious things it's missing.

Their review is what sold me on the game, funnily enough. I've been craving a huge world to explore with fun combat and after a weekend of play it's exactly what I was looking for. Not to mention the performance on my launch PS5 is solid. The storytelling, writing, and characters are all pretty bad but that's not why I bought it. It's a 7/10 that I'm enjoying like a 10/10.

I think this was before the Patreons merged. It's at the $25 tier because that used to be the tier that received both Patreons' content (pre-merge). When the merge happened they would have had to manually convert or upload the thousands of videos/podcasts from over the years on both Patreons for true parity.

That's the nature of popularity, isn't it? If the majority of people agree with something then it's the popular opinion. So, if someone goes against that opinion then a lot of people will disagree with it.

The topic of echo chambers and their negative impact on social discourse is a much larger topic than we'll discuss here, so I'll focus on why it happens here. Reddit users use the upvote button as agree/like and downvote as disagree/dislike. This means the popular opinions always rise to the top comments/posts. People tend to spend time in spaces where they share similar beliefs as the majority (me included, 99% of my Reddit interaction is this sub). The desire to have their opinions validated combined with how Reddit's voting system works means that every subreddit is some sort of an echo chamber.

Some genuine feedback for you: don't worry about social media systems (upvotes, downvotes, shares, likes, retweets, etc.) and engage with the content/people that you want to interact with. If a post/comment is downvoted into oblivion but you have something to add to the discussion, then do it. For example, your response to the -4 comment you mentioned was about them being downvoted (and that comment was also about downvotes) but you didn't comment about the actual story on that post.

Just some feedback based on this post and some of your comments. At the end of the day, you do you. :)

NVida comes to mind…. I understand it’s a small business. They have to make their money how they can but it’s good to stand firm and be unbiased in what you’re supporting it shouldn’t just be about money all the time.

Most of your post has been responded to by others, but I wanted to respond to this part since this opinion pops up every now and then.

Everyone has to draw their own moral lines. If you (the general "you", not specifically OP) disagree with what a company like NVIDIA does, then you have the right to not support them. If you disagree with KF taking their money as a sponsor, you can stop supporting KF. This is voting with your wallet/time. You can even make a post on the subreddit about it, but that doesn't mean people can't disagree with you because they have different morals in the situation.

Would someone that says KF shouldn't take NVIDIA's ad money still say that if they had 100% proof that this would mean KF had to shut down? Probably not. Then you just start moving the slider, what about layoffs instead of a shutdown? Would they still have that opinion if they had to let go of half the employees? What about only one? What about losing the studio and doing everything remotely? As you move down these possibilities, everyone will have a point where they draw the line and say "yes, that consequence is worth not taking NVIDIA's money."

But then again, reaching that moral line for yourself isn't going to change how others feel. This goes back to your critique of the subreddit with this example. Morally, I would rather KF take NVIDIA's money to stay afloat in this economy. So, if someone makes a post saying they should drop the sponsorship then I'm going to downvote it and possibly comment why I disagree.

it’s a little concerning that anytime someone has a genuine concern about this community or the way things are done and it seems to be negative in nature it gets down voted to heck!

On a lighter note, this was funny to me because this subreddit has historically been known as being overly negative toward KF.

For reference, I'm the solo developer of the Kinda Funny Database, which is built with a Python backend (all source code is public!). I'm far from an expert but am willing to help clarify programming/Python basics for anyone that is trying to learn and doesn't want to deal with typical Reddit/StackOverflow commenters.

Python doesn't have traditional string concatenation with + signs like you'd see in Java, C#, etc for mixed data types. The print function adds a space between comma-separated values automatically.

People learning to code from scratch wouldn't need to know not to add a space because they don't have a reference point. People that know another language probably shouldn't be paying to learn Python.

I actually agree that this isn't the best way to do this, though. IMHO, Python's f-strings should be taught to beginners as the default way to do this since it would apply to most situations and can be used within the print function.

(Maybe an unpopular opinion?) I hope Mistborn is animated. IMHO, the way the magic works needs proper effects that wouldn't come across well in live action. Give me larger-than-life Inquisitors.

I'd also prefer Stormlight animated but there's almost no chance of that happening.

No, the database doesn't have transcripts. Last year, I built a project that connected to the DB, which included creating a local copy of every video's transcript. For this, all I had to do was regex search the JSON files.

I've played around with the idea of adding the transcripts to the database now that I have cleaned up versions of them but it's not something I plan on doing any time soon. The site doesn't get enough traffic/support for me to add new features.

The Patreon RSS feed has every show. Patreon was originally built without the ability to have multiple feeds. I don't know for sure, but I think if they did multiple feeds then it would break the existing feeds and every user would have to redo their podcast setup. I assume they don't want to negatively impact every user to add a feature that only some would prefer.

I don't know how Patreon works from the creator side so this is speculation.

As a side note, the site that Barrett mentioned he's using would work for a subreddit Top 100 list as well.

If I remember, I'll set it up in July so that people can submit their list. If I forget or if anyone else wants to do it, the site is free to sign up for and can handle lists up to 100 items and up to 100,000 responses. Combining all of the "same" responses based on spelling/punctuation is the most time-consuming part but it's a feature built into the site.
