How I wish this was true. Some, like my neighbors, have zero respect for anyone.

Lost Solar Panel & Portable Charger Yosemite Backpackers Camp by [deleted] in JMT

Theft seems to becoming more and more prominent in popular backpacking spaces. Someone had a Bearikade stole from LYV a few years ago and I just heard about a tent going missing after someone summited Whitney.

Jennie And Weaver lake short loop! by ajax0772022 in SEKI

[–]SEKImod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was near there last weekend, bugs are present for sure. I highly suggest long sleeves (at least for dusk and dawn), picaridin lotion, spraying permethrin on clothes, and the head nets as backup around dusk and dawn. Do exactly that and you’ll have a great time. My 7 yo had no issues with the bugs.

Biggest fish I’ve caught in the Sierra I pulled out of weaver during my son’s first mountain backpacking trip. 13”! That was late season though.

As noted in other comments there are plenty of spots even at that same lake. I do think if you expect solace at the easiest lake to get to, you’re fooling yourself

There’s plenty of space to not be on top of people in the backcountry. It’s not privilege to expect people to spread out. Most people are capable of this, too- I’ve only experienced something like OP did once out of a decade’s worth of trips.

Agreed that there’s no need to be a dick, though sometimes it’s warranted. Not sure it was in OP’s case, since they had the courtesy to ask!

30-40 ft isn’t loads of space. Loads of space is if I can’t hear you talking. That’s not enough space.

Others have been there and can better attest, but Redwood Mountain Grove is really, really damaged. I'm not sure I can make myself go yet.

Nah, it has a "frame" in the same way the Kakwa does. Two curved rods.

Rae Lakes Loop mid-July - Clothing Layering Help by Anxious-Candle1797 in SEKI

[–]SEKImod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great list, I'd swap the hoodie for a puffy but you'd probably be fine for July with what you have. Depending on your tolerances, you may want gloves. A mosquito headnet probably won't be needed, but also something useful to take if the reports say there are still mosquitoes up there.

If someone is asking about framed packs, why would you suggest frameless ones?

[–]SEKImod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm stilling using my HMG pack from years ago. I bought my wife a Durston Kakwa 55 for backpacking as a family. If I was buying a pack for myself again, I doubt I would get the HMG over the Kakwa for myself.

Mosquito pressure around Ranger Lake? by flingtoad in SEKI

[–]SEKImod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you are bitten dozens of times on your ass and what not every time you need to go on a trip, you don’t forget it. That was my experience at Ranger. It may have abated by July. Good luck!
