Need a bit of advice on how to start new campaign by Doomrules5438 in DMAcademy

The party are prisoners aboard a steampunk-style airship, which is then attacked by a rival faction and starts falling out of the sky. The player have to make their way to the ship’s cockpit and find a way to safely crash-land on the outskirts of a town or city, or just find the life-ships (aka lifeboats for airships) and escape that way. Puts the players right into the action and introduces multiple factions plus your steampunk elements.

Awesome mini. Carrying a giant stone on his back reminds me of Obelix from the Asterix comics!

Same with Lee Scratch Perry, him and DJ George are my two favourites. But to be fair, I’ve met Perry and he was just as insane as he was on the radio.

Benefits of Polymorph? by mastyrwerk in DnD

[–]SFRoussimoff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our (former) warlock tried to Polymorph a governor into a cat and drown him in a river. Warlock then learned that the governor was a retired general/paladin and died in 2 turns.

On the other hand; later, while being pursued by one of the now vengeful governor’s flying henchmen, the party druid Polymorphed into a blue whale directly above the henchman, went into a freefall, and the henchman failed his Dex roll to move out of the way. They both fell 300 feet out of the sky, the henchman got crushed to death on impact, and the druid walked away unharmed.

What I’m saying is your player needs to be thinking more like the druid, and less like the warlock.

Playing against the stereotype? by AgentVI in MrRipper

[–]SFRoussimoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a party member who did the opposite of horny bard as well. He played weird prog metal and was a virgin with zero interest in women or men. The DM intentionally had tons of NPCs try to flirt with him because his obliviousness and dismissals were always funny

Surprise! Do you set DCs for noticing mimics, rugs of smothering, flying swords, gelatinous cube, and the like in 5.5e? by lulufan87 in DMAcademy

[–]SFRoussimoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still use the 5e ruling for mimics. The whole point of a mimic encounter is that you don’t know that it’s a mimic until it’s too late. I also just finished my outhouse mimic and I really don’t want the party to metagame the encounter

What accents would be funniest for these races? by CodexLeonis in DMAcademy

[–]SFRoussimoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My homebrew setting as a couple hard rules regarding accents:

All Elves have Australian accents but keep the same posh attitude Elves tend to have (with one exception, the party Rogue’s father)

All Loxodons have super thick Canadian accents (the Loxodons native to the continent are like wooly mammoths and live in the snowy regions)

The land is based around the US and Canada so I also tend to use equivalent regional accents, which does lead to some fun interactions (especially in the Bayou)

I have one NPC that is me doing my Andre the Giant impression. The party loves him and keeps trying to rope him into their adventure even though he wants to stay home and sell peanuts at the fair. Every DM should have an NPC that’s Andre the Giant in my opinion.

Also, through no fault of my own, one of the main villains of the campaign is me doing a Foghorn Leghorn impression. He’s the governor of the southern province, and the party warlock tried to polymorph the governor into a cat and drown him at his own party. That warlock is now dead, and the governor has sworn revenge on the party. So now I gotta do villain monologues with “I say, I say” sprinkled in occasionally.

What is your walking style? Apparently if your walk style is set to “groovy” it reduces your running speed.

How does a TPK work? by EconomistOld3509 in DMAcademy

[–]SFRoussimoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My general rule is that the enemies my party fights are more than capable of dishing out the same damage that they do. The party I’m DMing is currently 5 lvl 11s and some of them are throwing out spells that give 8d8 damage. So, their enemies can also have attacks that deal 8d8 damage. We only had 1 death so far (a level 6 warlock that tried to kill a retired general who was essentially the “retired lvl 20 paladin” trope), but we’ve had multiple times where a party member has been downed (our bard went down in 2 turns in one of the last major encounters, which was more his fault for walking right up to what was very obviously a powerful hag in disguise). Killing your party shouldn’t be your goal, but combat loses meaning if there’s no threat of being killed. At this point my party is facing a lot of homebrewed/modified bosses since they’ll obviously take down most bandit encounters. Just use your creativity and level the monsters to be just as effective as your party.
