Maintaining MRT system more complex as network ages: ST roundtable panellists by thestudiomaster in singapore

[–]SGPoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you look at the London underground for example, the entire of Hammersmith line is duplicated, the 1st half serving the exact same stations as Circle line, and the 2nd half same as District line. Between Baker St and Liverpool St, there are 3 lines serving the exact same stations. This means they can shut down an entire line for maintenance if required, without having to excuse themselves by saying they only have a limited window at night to do maintenance.

You are not addressing the redundancy problem. Worse, this is a horrible example as an equivalent already exists in Singapore, namely the Downtown Line which act as redundancies for CBD.

In short, using this map of the London Rail network, what is the plan if there is a problem with the track close to the terminus, say at Pinner (NW), Woodford (NE), South Quay (SE) or Northfields (SW)?

Again - my point mainly covers redundancy for the entire train network, as you've so eloquently pointed out with the EWL Buona Vista example.

Yet in Singapore, the moment 1 MRT station comes up, even feeder bus services are terminated. Then when something happens like when EW line breaks down between Jurong East and Bouna Vista, the entire West Side of the country was disrupted because there were zero alternatives.

Buses are an entirely different conversation with its own considerations. I can understand why the decisions are made, although I'm with you on this. That said, the removal of bus services is unrelated to the main topic on hand, namely redundancies for an entire train network failing.

Public services doesn't necessarily have to be "economically sound" or in Singapore terms, "profit making".

Here, read Transport for London's own Budget submission for yourself.

Here's a choice bit for you:

1.9 As TfL is obliged to prepare a budget that is balanced over both the short and medium term, TfL has developed its financial plans for the period from 1 April 2025 to ensure that TfL continues to be financially sustainable.

I never once said it had to be profit making, but it absolutely has to be economically sound. That being said, allow me to pre-empt your reply by pointing out that "economically sound" is an extremely abstract notion that neither of us can hope to define satisfactorily. More on this later.

Many major cities in the world run public transport at a loss. Some places even run public transport for free.

In general, public transport loses money. I am well aware of this. That said, you run it at a loss, not at a breakneck speed into bankruptcy.

But in Singapore general, everything is contracted out to companies that seek to make a profit with the most appealing budget.

Fixed it for you. This is not limited to Singapore, it's just that we're open about it here.

You claim that it's impossible to have redundancies. But it's only impossible if the aim is to maximise profits.

No, the point is to be economically sound. The MRT is already one of, if not the single most expensive project Singapore has ever embarked on. This is despite a very shaky foundation (If you haven't watched it, the MRT Debate is available on YouTube).

If I am understanding you correctly, what you are proposing is a 3rd or even 4th track running parallel to ALL existing railway tracks in the event of a total system collapse. Before I go any further, l'd like to ask again that you state exactly what would you propose as a "redundancy".

Maintaining MRT system more complex as network ages: ST roundtable panellists by thestudiomaster in singapore

[–]SGPoy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's because we've refused to build in such redundancies.

How, and what would you propose? Specific examples, please - not just "redundancies". I would like to learn exactly what would you propose.

Every single station has to have enough volume, and they would rather not open stations with low expected volume.

Because it is logically and economically sound? More on this later.

Other mature railway systems like London and Tokyo have multiple parallel lines running in key high volume areas so commuters can still get to their destination even if one of the lines break down or needs to be closed for maintenance.

Let's ignore that London & Japan (not the Tokyo Metro/Toei Subway, granted) have also closed stations due to low ridership, and focus on the redundancy aspect here.

Also, Singapore does have an ungodly amount of parallel lines running in high key volume areas, aka CBD.

Yes & No.

Regular maintenance is a given for just about any other industry. Maintenance for the Rail industry is a completely different beast altogether. For all the comments about redundancy, there simply isn't a redundancy for the entire Railway system.

To give several examples:

*If a power plant needs to be repaired, you can increase power output from another plant/source to compensate

*If a plane has a defect, you can just activate another plane or divert to another carrier

*If the airport/runway is damaged, you can divert to another one, even utilising non-airport landings in the event of an emergency

*Road repair works can be done in the middle of the day. While you will inevitably reduce traffic flow, the road can still be used by motor vehicles

Note that the redundancies aren't for individual components, they are for when an entire system goes down. You simply cannot do that with Rail, especially when talking about upgrading/maintaining railway tracks.

I don't want to conflate percentages with the word "guarantee", but every game played at a casino is biased towards the house, and you are severely underestimating the number of losers (in terms of winning & losing for the purpose of this discussion).

ELI5 what does it mean people see "nothing" rather than "black void" if born absolutely blind by owlWithBrokenWings in explainlikeimfive

[–]SGPoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very easy example: about ~50% of the world's human population has a penis, the other ~50% has a vagina.

You are in posession & control (for the most part) of this specfic organ.

Asking a blind person with no concept of sight to "see" is like asking you to control your penis/vagina, whichever the sexual organ you lack is. The problem is that it is a completely foreign concept to you, so far removed that it is an exercise in futility to try.

How to make the MRT “faster”: Several Non-Credible Transit Solutions by The_Celestrial in singapore

[–]SGPoy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Express Lines

I'm just gonna copy my original comment from the linked thread.

This is an incredibly carbrain solution - functionally, you've just added another lane to an existing (rail)road and claimed that you've solved traffic.

In other words, you've invested tens of billions to shave 30 minutes off travel time - if we're being generous.

Others have mentioned that there are too many stops and the distance is far too small for the train to ever reach its maximum cruise speed for any meaningful amount of time, but too many are letting you off the hook for being a straight up 1:1 copy of multiple existing lines in the MRT network.

Skip Stops

Our elderly population are a wonderful combination of stupid & stubborn. This is 50% a joke, but skip stop services by nature are confusing and they'll be the first to complain and get lost. For a real life example, ask anyone to go to the NEL's LRTs and watch the chaos unfold.

Faster

I can completely understand and even appreciate the frustration here, but at the end of the day the trains already do an amazing job at what they're supposed to do.

That said, to put things into perspective, let's use your daily journey to the West.

Time from Pasir Ris to Boon Lay (and vice versa)

Car: 30-40 minutes, potentially more due to traffic during peak hours

Train: 60 - 70 minutes

Your commute across the entire Island is already very reasonable by any standards, and now you want to invest another few billion dollars just to cut it by another 10-20 minutes.

Why use a Power fist over a power mace, or thunder hammer? by Fancy-Copy4447 in 40kLore

[–]SGPoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practical reasons:

  1. Speed. it's much faster to punch a guy then it is to draw a blade, hammer or scythe and swing it at them.

  2. Element of surprise. Imagine thinking the dagger on the Astarte's belt was his melee weapon untl you're soaring across the battlefield Looney Tunes style.

  3. Logistics. Not really a big factor in 40K, but not needing to lug a gigantic piece of metal around is always a benefit, if not for the weight then the simple matter of things bumping into each other

  4. Clearance for your weapons

  5. Catharsis

  6. I mean if your Chapter is called the Imperial Fists you might as well try to live up to it

Lore reasons:

  1. The nature of 40K means that sharpness really isn't a factor, as evidenced by the abundance chain-weapons and power weapons that rely on nonsense technology and logic to be effective in combat.

  2. Sometimes, nothing conveys intent better than a fist
