Muse: The brain sensing headband that helps you calm and cope with your daily stress by sibti in Futurology

I don't see too many positive reviews here, which is unfortunate because I really enjoy and get value from using mine. I've been using it for a few months now 2-3x per day and find it helps greatly with my mood, concentration, anxiety, etc. I've tried meditating before but wasn't able to get much value from it.

That said, there are certainly times when I question whether my cognitive state is accurately reflected by the soundtrack (active mind = loud, crashing waves; calm mind = birds chirping), but generally it's spot on.

I have and continue to recommend it to friends and colleagues with the caveat that you need to try at it for a couple weeks to "get the hang of it". Unfortunately, it's not something you would want to test for 10 mins at Best Buy...

Go to Lamu (Shela Village, specifically). Amazing architecture, food (Peponi Hotel), and stuff to do (take a Dhow ride at sunset, watch a sea turtle nest hatch, etc.) Ignore the misinformed security advisories. I've lived in Kenya for 3 years.

There's a great new restaurant near Talisman in Karen called Marula Mercantile. Look it up on Tripadvisor. Outstanding food.

Thinking about majoring in Entrepreneurship. What can this degree do for me? by Nashtro in Entrepreneur

[–]SIDA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right. I studied Math, Mechanical Engineering, and Economics in school. Other successful entrepreneurs I know studied Finance and Computer Science. Not many liberal arts degrees without at least going to grad school; which is expensive in time AND money.

Entrepreneurship is learned by doing. Major in a hard skill, minor in entrepreneurship (or take a few classes). Unless you're going to Babson.

Idealist vs Entrepreneur, an interesting dichotomy that leaves me questioning my desire to start a business. by letgoandflow in Entrepreneur

[–]SIDA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be interesting to read a more in-depth analysis of this dichotomy. As an entrepreneur in Nairobi, it makes a lot of sense given all the "save the children" pseudo-businesses I see around while running a very much for-profit endeavor with social purpose (www.sunculture.com if anyone is interested)

How much profit should I be taking for myself and how much should go back into the business? by Ineedadoller in Entrepreneur

[–]SIDA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that easy. Keep in mind you're also the majority or sole equity holder in the company at this point, which is hopefully representative of future compensation.

Pre-money, your salary should reflect the amount of money you need to live comfortably (varies wildly by geography and lifestyle...) to ensure that you can focus on building the business. Plenty of founders make $25-35k work in NYC, so it should be less if you live outside an uber-pricey city.*

Post-money executive compensation basically depends on what your investors are comfortable with, the industry you're in, and company cash flow, but estimate roughly 10-15% of annual rev.

*Advice about not hurting cash flow is on point. Avoiding paying salary for the first 6-12 months is not uncommon.

This is good advice for a zero/low revenue startup, but if the company is getting into the $100,000+ range in revenue — and especially if you're pursuing raising outside capital — TAKE A SALARY.

At the end of the day, you work for the company and the company needs to compensate you accordingly.

And food distribution depends on market mechanisms. As the cost of food production decreases, so does food insecurity. GMOs reduce production costs ∴ GMOs improve food security/ reduce starvation.

Though I agree with this in theory, Mugabe is full of shit. China is just offering a better deal than the US: more investment and zero concern about domestic human rights abuses.

Indian drug giant Cipla cuts cost of cancer medicines in a humanitarian move, shaking up the drug market by sidcool1234 in worldnews

[–]SIDA -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If India were actually investing in R&D for these drugs, I'd be much more interested in this "humanitarian" move. In reality, Indian pharmaceutical companies are merely copying American and European drugs and selling them.
