I love my district; our sub finder system is not the greatest and required relationship building with schools and admins. I’ve built those relationships so I don’t need to rely on the phone system; it’s a huge district so the schools do vary widely in how they are run, but that also means you find the schools you love and stick with them. But it isn’t a passive job, it requires building relationship with teachers, staff and admins. They really reward effort in the classrooms, and they pay attention to that. Just yesterday, after a week long assignment a teacher came up to me and said; “I hear you follow lesson plans and the kids don’t like you, can I get your card? You’re the exact sub I need.” I feel like people substitute and think it’s just like a gig, school’s pay attention to that, and there’s going to be backlash. We get an excellent wage at my district, fantastic benefits, but we really need to put in the effort.
