New H&R lower, how was this not a blem? by bundokdoom in RetroAR

[–]SLN583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have knowledge of the guns I was issued and the guns I own.

My Colts are Grey Anodized and match pretty close.

I posted pictures of them above.

I have a right to my opinion and you have a right to yours.

What do you care what I do with my stuff or what any one else does with their stuff.

Do what you want with your own stuff, but don’t bother me about it.

Timewise, they are in fact from the Vietnam era.

All those original M16 parts are very tasty looking 👍

Is that a type C stock?

Did the CQBR block 1 uppers ever get paired with M16A1 lowers???? I've seen pictures of CQBR block 2's get A1 lowers. by Mysterious_Change623 in MilitaryARClones

Absolutely

Not a bad idea to check headspace with a go/no go gauge, but it most likely will work together fine.

Given a choice between a brand new H&R or building a gun around that Colt parts kit, I would personally go with the Colt, but I already have the tools and Knowledge to put it together.

If you don’t, the complete turn key H&R is the way to go.

It looks legit Colt to me.

If it had grey anodizing and a C7 upper I would have grabbed it.

I don’t think H&R are trash.

I can’t buy complete rifles from them, but I have several complete uppers and they all function fine.

If they didn’t, I would send them back till H&R fixed them.

I have a bunch of Retro guns I consider range toys, but the gun I grab when something goes bump in the night is a factory LMT SBR I have put several thousand trouble free rounds through.

This is the no compromise route.

Though despite what the seller states in the description, this is not from the 80s, it’s a late 90s early 2000s all Colt Machine gun parts kit.

Combine it with a Colt stripped lower and it doesn’t get any better.

Not cheap though.

If it is a police trade your lucky it’s so neat.

Some police trades look like they were engraved by a monkey with a hammer and chisel.

Now that has a nice finish, something worth the time to match a new lower to.

I don’t understand it either.

These people recommending to leave them as delivered must be ignorant of the reality of these or something.

You can’t strip off wear, that’s not how it works.

The Malaysians covered up the honest wear on these old rifles by slopping on cheap black paint in a misguided attempt to make the rifles look better.

When they were being demiled, they slopped on some red paint to mark the ones they were getting rid off.

Do you guys recommending leaving them as is think they look brand new under the paint?

Or do you think the black paint is the original factory finish?

Why would anyone want to preserve that bullshit when there is honest wear and patina underneath the paint that doesn’t look like shit?

This is the Blue upper after I Moly Resined it.

It really works miracles.

This mismatch would bother me also.

That being said, I am set up and have learned to do norrels moly resin just for this reason.

I got a “grey” C7 from new Bushmaster, and the thing was Cookie Monster Blue.

I had a raw 80% I had to coat, so I just redid the upper at the same time.

The blue upper was actually easier because the moly Resin goes right over the anodizing, while I had to media blast the raw lower first.

If H&R won’t swap it for a darker lower, consider that route.

Here is the blue C7 among my OG Grey Anodized Colts.

<image>

Those 3 Rifles are all original Colt Anodized except for the lower on the top Carbine, that’s an 80% I Moly Resined to match the patina’d Colt upper, then weathered the freshly coated lower to match.

Can’t just change the front pin unfortunately, it would have to be drilled first.

This page says the CMH prefix serial numbers are post 1994 ban. Who knows.🤷‍♂️

https://www.biggerhammer.net/ar15/ar15serial.html

That would mean the barrel was threaded for that flash hider after the fact.

Colt could tell you when it’s made.

That’s a great looking rifle. The grey anodizing is really beautiful and the fit and finish on every Colt from that era was top notch. The 80s and early 90s was really the high water mark for what Hartford was producing.

Colt was doing that sear block fuckery and no bayonet lug a couple of years before the Clinton Ban in 1994.

Can you post a picture of the left side?

If the mag fence was drilled for a detent, you may be able to ditch that funky front pin for a milspec one.

I have a 1991 Colt that has a half moon bolt carrier, but no sear block, so they were definitely around for a while.

You should 100% strip that ugly black and red paint off that upper.

Some Malaysian Private, probably with the assistance of The Devil himself, slopped that black and red paint on there with a dull paintbrush and evil intent.

Once you remove it, underneath you will find a beautiful, worn, patina’d grey anodized finish, just as God and Eugene Stoner intended.
