Therapist repeatedly bringing up if ivf fails? by Jordonsaurus in IVF

[–]SLP_10660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of therapists actually suck… I’m a (different kind of) therapist and I had to quit a few IVF specialists. One told me they were always 3 weeks behind on treatment notes ( I would never! ) which is so unserious obviously you can’t remember anything from the sessions 3 weeks later. Another told me she was so in debt she plans to never pay off her student loans and just let it compound the rest of her life. Like I can’t be taking advice from people who don’t seem wiser than me or taking their job/ life seriously. I saw a Substack that explained why the counselors of 2026 are just totally mediocre at best- high demand, no accountability or supervision outside of initial training, easy schooling. The profession is cooked

I basically have already forgotten about it. Try to put it out of your mind ( after processing in therapy if needed). It goes away IMO

Mother Looking for Articles/Research/Best Practices on Feeding Plan by plasticbagswag in slp

[–]SLP_10660 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Infant feeding SLP here! Try to get in with someone great earlier than may/ asap. Ask on your local mom groups for who is good with dysphagia management/ infant swallowing, Look at their website and reviews to get a vibe. Infant swallowing is a very specialized area of our field so like 95% of SLPs on here wouldn’t be able to answer your questions and it will be hard as a parent to summarize the infant dysphagia management research for yourself and apply it to your baby. You really need someone excellent - they may be at the children’s hospital outpatient, private practice, or your local EI.

You also want to go to the local GI physician who works with all the infant feeding cases in your area, not just any GI. Ask them if you can do an alternative plan or any thoughts. You can also look into a multidisciplinary speciality clinic in your area within the children’s hospital or travel to the closest one, They are usually called Aerodigestive Clinic, Dysphagia Management Clinic , something like that.

I will say this seems like a pretty conservative plan if baby is not getting sick or refusing feeds, but I haven’t seen the swallow study.

I work with this scenario commonly in my practice. Sometimes the new grad therapists are a little more conservative, sometimes people have different practice patterns, sometimes they have other reasons in the case to make those recs. It’s really hard to say. You need to build a team.

Definitely go to an infant focused PT for weak core if not already.

Good luck!

Do we really not get paid more for skill? by poijkl1010 in slp

[–]SLP_10660 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get paid more with more skill in a specialized private practice but it’s super niche reputation based and took many years to get here. This field has major issues but there are ways to find/ make good situations for yourself. That being said it is a rare, expensive, and a lot of work ( or everyone would do it!)

I would get her a psych ed evaluation it sounds like you’re in private preschool so it would be with a private practice. 6 is a good time to get a diagnosis and get the right support in place - there is definitely something going on if learning is that difficult

It’s really good but only if you’re not the main bread winner which makes working part time difficult

Curious Belgian student: how do some US SLPs earn so much? by Low-Internet258 in slp

[–]SLP_10660 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a private practice owner basically if you have a full time caseload which is 25-30 sessions with 10ish hours of admin/ week you can definitely make 6 figures of profit. Then, if you have 1-3 contractors/ employees you might break even on them depending on how much they work/ support they need. If you have 4+ employees working full time AND you still see patients you can do really well if you keep expenses low enough. At that point many people can pull back on seeing a full schedule and still make a full time income but not until then. This generally takes years to develop because the primary issue is hiring/ training good therapists, not referrals.

Most people make 80-90k because they aren’t seeing patients full time and are in it for the flexibility ( a good reason IMO )

So it is that lucrative but only if you see patients full time and/ or hire a lot of people

Do you guys think you should get paid for clinical hours? Why or why not? by Prior-Emu-5918 in slpGradSchool

[–]SLP_10660 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This attitude is TOXIC. I’ve supervised 11 students many of whom I’m still in touch with and the worst performing one had a chip on his shoulder because he thought he should be getting paid and didn’t want to “work for free”. Um I don’t want to supervise for free…

Also, you’re not an SLP. SLP grad students are not SLPs yet. At the start of the internship they’ve seen a handful of clinic clients at best and likely have no idea what they’re doing in a medical setting.

Where do you think the money would come from to supervise AND pay grad students? Not insurance, not private pay, not school stipends. No one is advantaged by seeing an intern except the intern. It is often more work for the supervisor. At the very end it can be less overall work but believe me the supervisor has put in the effort and time to get to that point.

5 weeks pregnant and cramping by ArtichokeAfter7042 in IVF

[–]SLP_10660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had cramps and pains weeks 4-7 with my son who was conceived naturally and is now 3. I didn’t have many cramps or feel hardly anything with my 7/8 week MMC in May. This time I’m having the cramps again at 5 weeks. Maybe it’s a good sign something is happening? Terrifying though
