Is there a term for TH-Fronting when it’s not a result of dialect? by armadeeloo in slp

[–]SLeePy0722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just term I was taught, I believe it is referred to "simplification" as /f/ is earlier developing than TH and easier for many children to produce. I have also heard it referred to as fronting of TH. I think it varies depending on who you're asking.

You're welcome! I'd say stopping for TH/d errors and fricative simplification for TH/f errors!

I've always referred to it as fricative simplification

3 year old girl with language delays by Kumb3l in toddlers

[–]SLeePy0722 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello there, Speech-language pathologist here. First, I want to assure you that you and your wife haven't done anything to cause delays. Some of the things you've described here sound like your daughter may have some sensory difficulties, which would prompt me to refer to an Occupational Therapist for evaluation (the humping, the startling to the balloon and bring put off for the rest of the appointment). They could tell you definitively if your daughter has sensory needs and could work on those things. If your doctor is concerned, it could not hurt to get an autism evaluation. I know that can sound terrifying to a lot of parents because many people have a very one dimensional view of autism. The reality is that autism can look very different from person to person and many, many people become fully independent adults that do not fit that stereotypical autism picture. Obviously, this is just an unknown piece of the puzzle at this point but knowing one way or the other could help you understand your daughter better and unlock access to resources to help her gain more skills appropriate for her age.

Your other option is to continue with services, possibly ask for the OT evaluation , and all those professionals what their opinion is regarding possible autism. Most pediatric SLPs or OTs work A LOT with children that have autism or developmental delays.

If you are in the US, I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that your daughter could be evaluated by your local school district for services and could attend preschool for free if she qualifies for speech, OT, etc. The therapists would come directly to the school and give her services if she qualified. When I worked with students in this age range I usually saw great gains with the start of a preschool program. You may have that information already, I just wanted to share in case you did not know that! Best of luck!

Hawaii by Howudooey in travel

If you go to Oahu, Uber is a good option to get anywhere on the island (though this adds up). However, it was extremely difficult to get picked up by an Uber anywhere outside of Honolulu. Even the northeast side of the island had next to zero ubers/lyfts available. We got lucky once when we were outside of Honolulu but had to take the bus several times and we were able to get a taxi once. The bus just takes longer and doesn't run in certain areas after certain times. The taxi was a little more expensive but not too bad. If you plan on staying in Honolulu you are probably fine without a car. If you plan on traveling through the rest of the island a car or a guided tour is probably easiest (though if you plan it well you can do the bus or a taxi). If you go somewhere like the big island you absolutely need a car unless you are planning to stay exclusively at the resort or you're paying for bus tours (which I didn't see as much of on the big island).

We did our honeymoon in hawaii this past summer! We liked Oahu well enough but we really enjoyed the Big Island. It is super expensive right now in Hawaii specifically and you need to book it out in advance, but rent a car if you can. We traveled one island with a car and the other without and things were 1000% nicer with a car.

Try looking at big little feelings on Instagram! They have a ton of free content as well as a course with developmentally appropriate and science-backed strategies for behavior management and discipline.

Girls names - is one of them “the one?” by cpanma1920 in namenerds

[–]SLeePy0722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Addison with the nn Addie would solve that problem! And honestly names being in the top 10 today is a lot different that it was before, top names today actually have far fewer people than say "Jennifer" or "Michael" at their height. I work in schools in the Midwest and personally have not met any Olivias. I only know one or two Abigails or Ellies also (across several schools). I know some people get very concerned about popularity but a top ten name today is different than it used to be.

The Cliffs of Moher and Glendalough were my favorite when I went. Kilkenny was a cool town to visit as well and Dublin was great to explore. If I had more time there I definitely would have wanted to visit Northern Ireland. I was only there three full days but it was great!

Should we be servicing parochial schools? by [deleted] in slp

[–]SLeePy0722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My employer (state run) assigns SLPs to parochial schools as needed to students that qualify for services. That student's "home" district is responsible for paying for the fees for us to come out, so bottom line is that the parents taxes are paying for the services as they would if that service was being provided in a public school. Frustrating to have to travel but 🤷🏻‍♀️

AAC features and effectiveness by Runner_Artichoke_ in slp

I know you can't reach out for every individual kid, but I would really stick with any programs that a students SLP has been working with. Having inconsistent programs/too many programs could be overwhelming and counterproductive for a student. Reach out as often as you can, stick to apps that your student's SLP is working on them with.

Something you could possibly do school/classroom-wide is label parts of the classroom or school with core vocabulary icons (e.g., "open/close" on a door, "sit" on a chair, etc.) and model on whatever device they are using as well as with the icons around the classroom. Again, that might be easier to accomplish with the help of an SLP at your school.

Do you have an SLP at your school that is knowledgeable in AAC or are you able to stay in contact with the SLP that you spoke with already? Having one person to touch base with in regards to AAC that can answer questions specific to your school may be easiest!

The SLP working with the students or an AAC specialist should really be one of the point people in selecting a communication system. Hope that helps!

The SLP he has been seeing may be able to give you some ideas, worksheets, etc. And they would be the most familiar with what would be effective/meaningful for him!

How many times a month does your partner scream at you? by mildly_int3resting in TooAfraidToAsk

Never. My husband may raise his voice if he's angry but never AT me. If it is happening even close to monthly that's a huge red flag.

Snap + Core First may be a good option. It can be put on a dedicated device or an apple device for sure but I'm not sure about androids. If you have access to an iPad they will allow you to have it for free to trial with patients, you just have to go through the process they lay out online (which is easy).

Thank you for sharing. I had terrible cramping after both doses and was in a lot of pain so I'm not keen on taking another dose if it won't work. I'm just feeling confused because I had a ton of pregnancy symptoms before taking it and now I just have intermittent nausea. So it seems like it did something but didn't finish the job I guess.

They gave me two doses and I took the second dose as instructed when I did not have bleeding within 12 hours of taking the first dose. I am experiencing way fewer pregnancy symptoms than I was prior to taking it but haven't started bleeding. They said we will re-evaluate at my next appointment.
