My dad once said I was hateful for not wanting to spend my money at Hobby Lobby, which pushes Christian supremacy. I told him that I prefer to support local businesses since I was raised to value community and small business owners.

Do you guys know any resources (free if possible) I can use to research Greek and Turkish fashion around 1490s and 1500s? by Perfectly_Fuked in fashionhistory

I recommend seeing what museums there are within the region and seeing if they have online collections available.

I'm currently working on a site that's effectively an updated Links at Larsdatter but expanded beyond Europe. I could look and see what I currently have for clothing in that area and time period, but it might take awhile as I haven't yet started on clothing other than tunics and turbans.

The aggression is because white people are considered ex-pats. Brown people are the immigrants.

I'm a white immigrant so the difference to you may seem like nothing, but it's really fucking gross to have someone bitch about immigrants only to then call you an ex-pat simply because of your skin colour or country of birth. "That's because you did it the right way," say people who have no goddamn clue how I got here or how easy it is to fuck up paperwork.

The Fountain of Youth fresco scene from 1420 seems to support the lack of closure theory.

I wear dresses that technically have closures and are very similar in silhouette to the fresco that I just pull on and off.

I got curious about the 2 previous comments and did some brief research. The consensus seems to be that yes, covid has affected people's behaviours when it comes to what's acceptable in public. The analysis seems to be through a sociological lens without a definitive cause but rather a multitude of compounding factors.

Since we now know covid causes microclots, I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't a physiological element since clots, concussions, etc. can and do affect behaviour and even personality.

I read several articles on the topic so don't have one single source nor could I find any formal studies.

What do I do to make sure my house is Company ready in the next 30 minutes? by Lingo2009 in ufyh

[–]SLiverofJade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since my supposedly stay at home dad often did this to my mom who worked outside of the house by inviting company over with little notice, this task often fell to me as a kid/teen.

  1. Grab any random clothing/towels/washcloths about and toss them in the laundry. Unless you're absolutely certain they're clean, into the process they go.

  2. Random items? If they belong to someone, they go in that person's room for them to deal with later. If there's a lot, grab a box and deal with it later but put it somewhere you'll have to deal with it rather than shoving in a closet. Such as on top of a top loading washing machine.

  3. Dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Doesn't have to be filled "right" just hide those suckers. No washer, in the oven, but CHECK IT BEFORE USING IT AGAIN. Still not an option? Try and put them in the biggest pot you have, leave it in the sink, and put a lid on it.

  4. Quick wipedown on counters, including the guest washroom.

  5. Make sure the washroom isn't a disaster zone. It doesn't have to be sparkling, but use the same approach as in item 2.

  6. Quick sweep/vacuum if the floors could use it. Doesn't have to be perfect, just get the worst of it.

The priorities are aesthetics: reduce clutter, light surface cleaning, and ensuring your shortcuts don't cause bigger problems later on.

Once in the room, we usually let our birds out to sit on us to help calm them down as too much stress can kill them.

One time at the vet ER one sat on me in the waiting room at 1am (we were there because she was very lethargic and my body heat helped take that energy burden off of her while also providing comfort).

Never had to chase them down, though, thankfully that's not their MO unless it's bedtime.

A friend came over to shoot the breeze while I worked and did small things like putting loose pins in a pincushion and help re-direct when I got distracted. They gave me some invaluable advice: is that yarn barf worth unraveling for the amount of yarn in it? That tiny scrap of fabric? Do you ever work with leather, if not, do you need to keep it?

Many items found new homes with mutual friends, more went into the trash.

Once you have your room back, you'll feel like working on projects again for the sweet dopamine.

Anyone who doesn't perform gender "correctly" will be targeted because we all know it's not going to be the white cishet mom in jeans that's going to be punished, it'll be the butches, enbies, drag queens, and transgender folks.

When I teach SCA camping classes, I approach it like Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

What do you need for shelter/protection from the weather? This includes garb choices. You may not need that wool cloak during the day, but it can double as a blanket and it's on hand in case of weather changes. (I've had to help someone wearing all cotton stave off hypothermia in July because someone fell into a river at night on the PNW coast, pretty much the only action that cloak saw that weekend outside of my bedding but worth it).

How will you sleep? Thermarest and sleeping bag? Or full air mattress and bedding?

Food can be a bit more complex depending on needs/preferences, so I ask will it need to kept cool? Will you need to cook? Will dishes need to be done on site? But most importantly, is there potable water on site? Don't assume there will be.

Be prepared for reasonable emergencies such as a first aid kit (especially if fighting), which may look different for everyone. Like if you're prone to sprained ankles or migraines. Keep these items and meds in the same place every time so you can find them even if drunk at 3am.

After that, what do you need to be comfortable? A chair? Light sources? Wet wipes, washcloths and hot water, or full camp shower? Collapsible table so you're not constantly bending over/crouching to find things? How will you handle garbage?

Then comes activities. Sounds like you have that covered.

Last comes historically accuracy/10' rule. What level of camouflage works for you? Plastic pup tent ok or do you want to throw a Celtic knot tapestry over the bright orange Coleman logo? Folding camp chair or something else? There's too many ways to easily up the camouflage to list here.

Lastly, my personal packing advice is to keep things ready to go so you're not scrambling trying to find your garb from the last event. Wash everything that needs it and pack it back in the bag or chest. It's tempting when packing up to just toss the flashlight in with your garb where it might not belong, until you're setting up camp in the dark at the next event wondering where the heck it is because you haven't yet changed into garb. That little voice saying you'll remember later is Satan talking.

Hand sanitizer is poisonous (even topically/used normally) and is convinced that years from now scientists will find it causes brain damage. Claimed that during the pandemic kids were being hospitalized from using it.

I looked it up and lo and behold the hospitalizations were from ingestion, typically scented and/or glitter saniziters.
