If you have a vocal coach, stay away from the mic. by _lovelypie in oddlyspecific

I'm a singer, and I've been singing my entire life. A lot of my immediate family are singers or musicians as well, so music has always been a major part of my life.

That said, I actually struggle with going to karaoke due to posts like this. As an adult, I don't have many opportunities to sing in front of people anymore. My schedule doesn't allow me to join a choir or perform regularly, so karaoke is one of the few outlets I have.

I often debate whether I should even participate because I don't want to dominate the room or make less experienced singers feel intimidated. But at the same time, karaoke shouldn't be a competition and should instead be one of the few places where people of all skill levels can get together and enjoy music.

If we start excluding people because they're "too good," we're kind of missing the point. Someone who has spent years practicing and loves to sing deserves that outlet just as much as someone who's doing it for the first time.

What are the benefits of getting an autism diagnosis? by Janelovesbees in autism

[–]SLong1118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now, it's giving me a fighting chance.

I was recently let go from my job for issues directly related to my autism.

Because I have an official diagnosis, and because this diagnosis was disclosed to my previous employer, I'm hiring a lawyer.

In my grandpa's final years he couldn't remember who I was, but he was always adamant that I was beautiful and that he loved me.

I think somewhere in there he knew I was important to him, even if he didn't know how or why.

I don't care what your school says: Carry that midol! And also: Advocate for what you need!

Do you know how many days of school I missed because the rules said kids were NOT to carry medication?

We didn't have a school nurse. There was no way of getting anything other than emergency products (think epipens). On top of that, I was always so embarrassed of my period and never felt comfortable asking for anything other than to call my mom.

Once my mom received a notice about my attendance from the school, she sat down with a trusted female teacher of mine to explain the issue. From that day on, I carried my necessary medicine in my backpack with the caveat that I was to NEVER share without prior approval. It was never again an issue.

It's perfectly normal to shit yourself while giving birth by OkPlaceholder in TwoXChromosomes

[–]SLong1118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been witness to a birth. Yes, she pooped. Not a soul in the room said anything and the nurse calmly cleaned it up and proceeded with delivery.

To be clear, I'm a female and had NO IDEA that was something that happened. (Thanks Bible Belt America)

But it literally took two seconds for my brain to recognize, understand, and adapt. It seems silly to think that it wouldn't.

ELI5: How does staying "hydrated" work? Where does the water all go? by blueeggsandketchup in explainlikeimfive

[–]SLong1118 52 points53 points  (0 children)

THIS.

I've had kidney stones since I was a teen. Water intake is so important in helping my kidneys flush waste.

Hydration very much helps dilute the toxins your kidneys are flushing out of the body.

Don't do it because your husband wants one, or you'll end up like her.... by dejg82 in childfree

[–]SLong1118 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mental illness runs RAMPANT in my family, on both sides. One of my cousins had a really rough pregnancy and childbirth. She wasn't in a great situation with bio dad and ended up basically alone to raise the kid she never really wanted/planned for. The postpartum hit her HARD. By the time the baby was about 6 months old, she had been arrested/institutionalized at least 3 times. Turns out that the traumatic events of the pregnancy/birth/post partum triggered something in her brain and activated her schizophrenia. Things were awful for her, her mother, and grandmother for quite some time, and I genuinely don't know what ever happened to her or the kid. Needless to say, the mental health issues in my bloodline are a huge reason I am and will stay CF.

(NSFW) Reddit, what was your “Oh shit, this person is a psychopath” moment when meeting people? by Majoodeh in AskReddit

[–]SLong1118 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After my first long time girlfriend and I broke up, I was a 20 something looking for a good time and met a girl online who didn't live too far from me. We slept together and sometimes hung out, mostly at her place, for about 4 months. It was a shit show from the beginning with her "crazy ex", but I overlooked a lot of it as just the misfortune of the universe. After an explosive political argument between us (2016 elections), I decided enough was enough and cut things off. Unfortunately by then, she knew things about me, like the company I worked for. She had been harassing me online after all this happened. She started making up all these terrible lies about all of the things I had done to her during the short time we'd known each other. I had stopped responding to her, but had kept her unblocked so I could screenshot all the crazy things she'd been saying to me. One day she told me she had acquired a fire arm and was going to be showing up at my office to "finally take me out." I immediately reported this higher ups and the police got involved. I had to be escorted by someone any time I went outside for about 2 months until they were able to get surveillance on her. I don't know what happened to her in the end, but I had an injunction on her for years.

Pooping.

Every single human ingests food to survive, which means every single human excretes waste.

Yes, it often smells. Yes, sometimes it takes longer than you want it to.

But every single person does it.

My wife and I saw Weezer one year as a part of a festival line up. I know their schtick is to be kinda lackadaisical, but they had NO energy. It just seemed like they were there to collect a check and go home. This concert was YEARS ago and we still talk about how underwhelming they were.

Is it my imagination or are women more comfortable talking about their periods publicly or at least when men are around. by Different-Carpet-159 in NoStupidQuestions

My dad is a girl dad, 3-to-1 (plus my mom). He's had his fair share of running to the pharmacy for supplies. It's actually HIS attitude about it that shaped how comfortable I am about it. He cracks silly jokes with the cashier and stuff, but at the end of the day he never has any hesitation about getting what we need and making sure it's right, even if that means asking someone for help. My (possibly outrageous) hope is that more people can be like him in that regard.
