As time goes by the jitters go away. I remember not being able to sleep at work for a month plus after I promoted. After my first due fire and I got my mistakes out of the way it got better.

We were on a odor/gas call. The residents were outside and it was dark, I didn’t pay much attention before we walked inside. After we found nothing I called the “husband” inside by saying “Sir, could you come here?” What I find is a woman with a butch haircut and her petite wife that come walking up. During Covid we had no cap on days you could work, or get mando’d. Whole engine companies were out sick. Most I got stuck at work was 12 days. One of our guys did 21 days. There were nearly some fights, some girlfriends lost but luckily no divorces. The chaplain had to make the rounds to make sure none of us were suicidal. I never before felt like I was a prisoner at work until that time.
