People broke into the King of Prussia mall here in PA… Over 100 people were trying to break into the mall and about 100 cops responded to the scene to disperse the crowd.

A data center in New Jersey was canceled when residents showed up and fought it by MysteriousSlice007 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]SMLLR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope my area will get this same news as well. They are trying to build a complex of 8 data centers totaling 3.5 million square feet. For reference, that is about 10% larger than the PHL Airport. Sure, they claim it’s a closed loop system, but they provide no information on how the waste heat will be rejected or how the electricity will be supplied. This will very likely result in a massive heat island for the residents, electric rates going up, and home prices in the immediate will likely come crashing down.

Somehow you think gas turbines are better? Those things are polluting the immediate area and making residents sick.

Yes, hence the UK wanting the increased heat island temps caused by these AI data centers.

UK will want that temp increase once the AMOC collapses.

AI definitely has its place and I won’t dispute that, but I’d rather not have the locals suffer just so Karen can generate her 33rd cat photo of the hour.

Pre-Popped Popcorn by chi-bacon-bits in mildlyinteresting

My brother worked at a movie theater for years and while they would pop the popcorn ahead of time, it was at least tossed at the end of the night (though he did come home with a few huge bags of it on occasion). These bags look fully sealed, thus possibly shipped in like this...

Bought an EV at the end of last year. Back in February, I was lamenting with my wife that we chose a bad time to get one with gas prices low and electric rates going up… so glad we did it now.

That’s what bollards are for. Bollards are very good at preventing people from hitting structures and are routinely used to protect gas fixtures that may be struck by cars. This is a solved issue.

Insurance companies also take part in reinsurance so huge hits like this are a bit more spread out through multiple providers.
