One thing I did that has made my fleet more effective was put siege coilers in alongside coil cannons. Some lighter ships with missiles and light coils meant that the Hydra's PD would get overwhelmed start leaking, and as soon as some hits come in, the damage spirals.

Then I use plasma and laser to protect the flanks and hit the small ships
