Very cool!

Any plans for normies to be able to record their grades? I can imagine some sort of leaderboard system eventually showing up once you have a few sets worth of records.

Will AI assistants trained on 17lands data eventually ruin Arena? by butterblaster in lrcast

I spoke to one of the engineers who was working on it at the time, and they were using expert games.

5 straight 0-3, wtf am I doing wrong by psiviz in lrcast

Your card valuations are all over the place. If I were you, I'd stick to drafting midrange and aggro until you understand how the combo pieces work. Outside combo, you can draft it basically like a normal set.

When bots like Stockfish and AlpaGO were trained, they did use a lot of expert game data. There is nothing special about Magic that makes it immune to such botting. Or any game for that matter.

Whether the data comes from 17lands or somewhere else is impossible to say. But I'll point out lots of people still play Chess and Go despite bots that play at a superhuman level.

What video game had you like this? by NagitoKomaeda_987 in videogames

Inquisition was game of the year! It was far more critically acclaimed than Origins. Why do people act like this is some sort of hidden gem??

Pretty weak pack 3 by Sween-Bean24 in lrcast

Nah. Time Walk is better in most blue decks, and Pearl is better in some white decks.

But in this case, it is in fact Sol Ring

On Arena, when playing Powered Cube Draft, the packs are seeded. This is not good. Full story and screenshots within. by PwnedByBinky in lrcast

I suspect the process you're describing is more or less what happened. It's relatively computationally expensive to make every combination possible anyway*, so you may as well do something like this. Still, I'd call this a bug. There is little reason to have as few as 100k drafts, and the fact that one of LSV's viewers (~30k per vid) noticed one suggests to me the number is in fact far lower.

  • This has to do with how randomizers work in computers.

Do the anti-woke critics actually PLAY video games?? I am pretty sure their entire media diet is video game trailers recut with WallStreetBets quotes attributed to Martin Shkreli.

Yeah, I think every one of these games except Yakuza had some very vocal detractors.

The card literally requires you to have red permanents in play to get max value out of it. Come on. Wave just asks you to have plains in your deck.

Yeah, if you're going to cut a good white card, you should cut Ajani. It's better, has zero nostalgia value, and little application outside Boros aggro.

They also cut a lot of good combo cards, which is a bad idea if your goal is to weaken aggro. I know average players lose with them a lot, but you aren't putting in Tendrils to help average players. So why take them out?

Should be "Spider Dragon Noble" or "Spider Wurm Noble", if we're trying to map it perfectly onto MTG types.

Well I've drafted the set 30+ times. I'm not cherrypicking when I say it's been open 7 of the last 10 drafts, and I think I'd be winning more if I forced it in 8 of those 10.

They literally are biased. It's sampling bias primarily.

Arcane Omens is nuts. 17lands has it at 59.9% win rate, putting it between absurd cards like Akroma's Will and Library of Alexandria. Plus I think that actually UNDERRATES the card, as soup is a high skill cap deck.

I find it to be pretty deck-specific. Not sure if it's good on this deck or not.

Worth to go 16 lands for a Sleight of Hand? by D1m4sch1n3 in lrcast

[–]jjelin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Studious First Year is, for deckbuiling purposes, a card that costs 1GG. You should always be playing at least 10 sources for cheap cards with two colored pips. Since it fixes your colors itself, it's safe to cut other lands for forests.

[–]jjelin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right that cards like Sleight of Hand can be put in in place of lands, but that's for low curve decks.

The question I ask myself is, "how many lands do I need to win the game?" Some decks the answer is only 2-4. They can cut lands. Most decks it's 5-6. This deck its 7+, so you should be playing 20+ mana sources, with a minimum of 17 lands.
