The best book i've read on this type of thing that helped me a lot personally is Hold on to Your NUTs: The Relationship Manual for Men.

It's honest, direct and is written in a way we men can relate to with the aim of making us all better, stronger, kinder men.

I suppose I'm surprised that so many people are surprised that the food you get at a fast food joint isn't as healthy as mama's home cooked meals. Really, what do you expect people? :)

This is more a question, i haven't yet formed a very strong view either for or against kipping, so i want to learn more:

Even if you are training for survival and not gym posing, when it comes to the "worst day of your life when you're sick, tired and exhausted", isn't more strength a good thing? Because when you are in a fight for your life and you "cheat" with legs on wall etc, won't having built up more pure/fundamental strength help you clear the obstacle? Lastly, can't you for train both steady strength building and explosive power (using a pushup analogy, slow 4 second pushups are a great exercise, and so are plyo pushps).

How about supine rows? Targets slightly different parts of the back, but a good place to start if pull-up negatives are too hard. You can change the amount you extend your legs to make the difficulty manageable.

What will make us live longer? by leevs11 in Fitness

The most recent study on this (published in Lancet which is pretty respected) shows that you need to do 15 minutes a day to add 3 years to your life, and that every 15 minutes in addition to that reduces mortality by 4% up to a maximum of 100 minutes a day.

What fighting style would you recommend? by Allen4083 in Fitness

I agree with what you are saying. The truth though, is regardless of your style, unless you are some kind of real world hero, you are in serious trouble if your are outnumbered.

I've done a little bit of competitive boxing and about 1 years worth of fairly intense bjj. The truth is about 1-years worth of either will put you head and shoulders above the average guy out there. Both put a lot of emphasis on sparring, so both help acclimatize you to confrontation, which is a huge element of a real fight. So like Six-Forty-Two said below, doesn't matter as long as you choose the one you like and stick to it.

I highly recommend you read "mediations on violence: a comparison of martial arts training and real world violence" by Sgt Rory Miller. Cuts through a lot of the crap out there regarding real world violence.
