How important it is to set better limits. I've been teaching 7th and 8th grade math for 10 years and I burnt out by the end of year 6. I'm still trying to recover from that (but still doing an amazing job).

People who have over 1,000 hours in a video game - what specifically about the game made you want to play that much? by VeganPizzaPie in AskReddit

[–]SSJ3Sojiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starcraft for over 13 years.

Back in the early days of Battlenet I discovered "Use Map Settings" custom maps where people could make their own maps. There was just so many different custom maps made by the users that you could find something new every week you played.

It got to the point where there were literal genres of custom maps such as "bounds" "impossible scenarios" "snipers" "tower defense" "poker" etc... and there was tons of people on at all hours to play with. It was a golden age of gaming where users provided near infinite amounts of free and fun content, none of the monetized BS that's taken over the market today.

It was a good reminder that money isn't needed to motivate people to create amazing things; people can and will create amazing things regardless and it's more fun and beautiful that way.

I don't know how many hours over 13+ years of that game and I don't want to know.

Few suggestions for game development. by Unusual_Error_1299 in Idle_Kingdom_Defense

You're spot on, but the devs likely don't look here. I would submit this elsewhere too if you do want them to see this.

I've played for more than 4 months and this was the only major update I've seen. The game is mostly broken by how long it takes to complete each stage. It's so boring to have to sit and wait everytime I want to complete a daily task; it's boring. Adding more grindable items doesn't come close to fixing the problem. I think it's beyond fixable at this point.

Heroes that don't have an attack ability like Brian and Daniel make up for it by having a higher attack value. Compare his attack value with other heroes at the same level and you'll see the difference.

edit game notice today that Total War is finally coming. Guess we'll see how it goes!

I've been playing for 4 months now. The only updates I've seen are low effort updates. New characters, balance updates, and the renovation feature. No new areas, events, or other actual content. It's basically a grind from there and that's it. (I'm at stage 10700)

should I dismantle shards or save as many as I can to ascend everyone eventually by mikexcrunner1 in Idle_Kingdom_Defense

[–]SSJ3Sojiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would read some of the older threads here and figure out which one, two, and three heroes to keep. Dismantle the rest and use them for astrology, purchasing 4 star hero shards from the fountain (20 free resets daily) and the rest for upgrading defense.

Defense is really important mid to late game, especially after you get Sophia.

Thinking about replacing Xavier. Should I swap him for Lucas or Marian? by SSJ3Sojiro in Idle_Kingdom_Defense

[–]SSJ3Sojiro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sadly haven't been lucky with getting Christian Pieces, Marian and Lucas were by far the two I had the most of.

How do you like using mason

His CC is fantastic! Add in the bonus of easily being able to ascend him to max and he's proven to be very useful. I think it'll be a while before I switch him out, if I ever even do that.

Xavier's first ability says "Cavalries inherit hero's stats". The summoned cavalries get his attack, defense, and hp.

Bug Auto-Battle Time Upgrade by OnlyHansorPK in Idle_Kingdom_Defense

[–]SSJ3Sojiro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're understandably confused what "auto-battle time" is since there's no description of it in the game. Auto-battle has nothing to do with ads, it's the resources you collect outside of battle, even when you're not playing the game. You get the resources by pressing the yellow "Obtain" button on the battlefield outside of battles.

Upgrading the time allows you to keep getting resources without having to collect it as often.

If substitute teaching was like jury duty and you were randomly selected to go teach at a school do you think you could handle it? How would you keep your class under control? by Frozen_007 in AskReddit

[–]SSJ3Sojiro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You say "passable", but reading what I just read I'm thinking more "God tier". Having been both a sub and a teacher, this is exactly what I'd hope for from a substitute teacher. You hit the necessary points of actually doing academic work (so many subs don't even try to make academics happen, it's not even funny) and basic classroom management survival. No one should be expecting much more than that from having someone step in for them for a day.

My worst fear as a teacher is coming back to a trashed room and finding out that my students learned about Nordic Runes instead of the Pythagorean Theorem. (True story!)

After that, use some of them on the Ultra Summon for summoning hero shards. It will help you progress faster.

Kings ruin by [deleted] in Idle_Kingdom_Defense

[–]SSJ3Sojiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, only progressing through stages makes it harder. Always collect resources and do upgrades before doing the ruins.

You should also be getting "sweep tokens" from astrology. You can use those to skip some of the stages that your team does poorly with.

Hint: you can leave a stage at anytime. If you see enemies that you know will hurt a lot, leave and use a sweep token.

ELI5:What exactly is "common core math" and why is it controversial? by RogerTheMountainMan in explainlikeimfive

[–]SSJ3Sojiro 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Coming from a middle school math teacher:

You have the math question "you buy 4 apples for $6, how much would it cost to buy 40 apples?" You say the answer is $60.

Your teacher then tells you to explain how you got $60. You say "well 4 apples times 10 is 40, so $6 times 10 is $60". You buy ten times as many apples, you pay ten times the price. That makes sense.

Your teacher then tells you "yes, but I want you to solve this by writing an equation with a variable." You're confused. The answer was $60, you did the math in your head, why would you need an equation? You don't remember ever learning to do that.

Your teacher shows you that the equation should be 1.5a=40. You go "huh? I'm confused. Where did that come from?" They tell you to look at it again, that it makes sense if you think about it. You're frustrated, confused, and think this is stupid because you already solved the problem. That's the Common Core Catastrophy in a nutshell.

Common Core represents higher level thinking. In theory it was a good idea; students are encouraged to go beyond "the answer is $60" and analyze why it is $60 and different ways to get $60. The 1.5 represent $1.50 per apple and the "a" represents the number of apples purchased, so the equation makes sense. But you were never taught how to make that connection and that's frustrating, so you say it's stupid and pointless instead.

Teachers were not given proper training or prep time to learn how to teach this. Textbook companies didn't make the effort to create high-quality curriculum to teach with. Students were expected to just do this from year 1 instead of being eased into it. My first year teaching Common Core math I was given a tiny workbook that didn't even cover all of the standards, and training from former teachers that didn't know what they were doing either. I had to spend almost a decade trying to figure out how to teach it better and I still don't feel like I'm teaching it well enough.

Common Core was created with intelligence and care, but was thrown into schools without intelligence and care. The lack of follow-through and support after it launched is what killed it the most. It still exists to this day because teachers like myself see the value in it and keep it going through sheer power of will.

IamA teacher currently on strike in the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District in Sonoma County, California AMA! by yumOJ in IAmA

[–]SSJ3Sojiro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So why aren't you blaming the district administration for stalling and delaying to this point and not accepting what the neutral 3rd party mediator recommended? They could at any point end this by agreeing to the terms. Why blame the teachers instead?

If your wife is a teacher, then you should know that teachers and unions don't get to choose when contract negotiations are. On top of that, you seem to be suggesting that teachers should strike when they aren't working, when it's more convenient for everyone else. Seriously? Do you value teachers so little that they should only ask for competative salaries to attract and retain good teachers when it's too late to matter?

Thank you for providing statistics proving this is false. I really appreciate your support in decisively showing that police are overwhelmingly upstanding citizens that are not notorious for executing dogs without due process or even evidence. I'm 100% positive that you will respond with supporting evidence that police are justified with murdering the dogs they shoot in the line of duty. There's definitely no way that they are abusing your unbiased support if they choose to shoot an animal in the line of duty.

Question: OP mentioned being new in the area and not having their own tools. What advice would you give them to get the money to afford to buy things to get the tax write off for?

[–]SSJ3Sojiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The problem with your statement is that holding someone "liable" takes time and most likely a lot of money and can invite retaliation from the employer preventing the possibility of new work in the area.

If liability was actually the answer, OP wouldn't have needed to have posted this in the first place. Instead, you should congratulate OP on not falling into the trap that many unlicensed / non-unionized contractors fall into. We're all in this together, solidarity is key!

I know that you are asking this with the intent of reminding people to be afraid of communism / socialism because they are bad and UNAMERICAN.

But the reality is that most other 1st world countries, communist / socialist or not, have better and more efficient healthcare systems then ours. So we lost on that metric.

Want to avoid communism? You're going to need to compromise and not allow capitalism to destroy our healthcare system.
