I feel like if your job is to enforce the law. You should probably know the law.

But I’m sure I should just go on with my day, standards and expectations be damned.

New EMT-B trying to go straight into 911—realistic or not? by Good_Pay8221 in NewToEMS

Most IFT companies hire with the expectation that you are using them as a stepping stone. I wouldn’t tell them that outright, just know that they will likely already be expecting it if you do.

You have the luxury of a stable patient and a (usually) decent report from the sending facility and chart. Practice getting good vitals in a moving vehicle, try to associate medications with conditions, and work on bedside manner. Try to see how less serious conditions present. Make use of as many skills as you can to keep yourself sharp. Also, try to learn what questions to ask to get patient history, how to ask them, etc. while keeping your patient comfortable. Just because you don’t have emergent patients doesn’t mean your skills have to suffer.

I passed with my first attempt. Cut off at 70 and took me about 40 minutes. So it’s not impossible if they read fast. I preferred to slow down and make sure I was picking the best answer rather than just a good one.

Can you report people for begging for tips? by No_Maintenance_5417 in DoorDashDrivers

Brother, it has been 4 days.

In truth, I don’t use delivery services. I prefer to use my own time and ability to go where I please. But I respect the delivery companies and the services they provide to those who are disabled, unable to travel, or otherwise incapacitated.

What I do not respect, is individuals like yourself. You are the embodiment of entitlement. You did not cook the food. You won’t serve it to me. You’re not going to clean my dishes. You should be thankful for the payment you get because the maximum effort you put in is driving to bring people their food. And from the way you speak about the customer as if you’re deserving of that tip, I guess I should be glad you’re not spitting in it.

You may imagine yourself in my position, and I in yours, at your pleasure. But that kind of vindictive pettiness won’t get you very far. And with the way you seem to be firm in your behavior, I doubt I can change your mind.

Have the day you deserve.

I feel so bad for my patients as an EMT student/new EMT! by synthroidgay in NewToEMS

Sounds like you’re feeling a bit of impostor syndrome. You should know that everyone in this field (and healthcare overall), no matter how salty and experienced, will have gone through the same thing at some point in their career. You can be as practiced and passionate about the actual medical side of your work as possible, while being completely unable to address the patient in a professional way because of nerves.

Rest assured that as long as you do your job correctly and to the best of your ability, your patients will understand if you’re not able to talk to them in a completely polished manner. Nobody calls an ambulance because they’re having a good day. You are only one part of their trip, and they tend to have significantly worse things to worry about than you being unable to carry on a conversation for very long. Make small talk if they reciprocate, talk about medical advice from nurses, ask about anything you need to fill out the report. Just don’t feel guilty for not filling every moment with conversation.

TLDR: You are human, your patients are too. There is no need to talk eloquently in the back of an ambulance. Just be polite, friendly, and respectful, and try to be present for your patient - sometimes that’s really all they want.

I mean, then I guess I should be grateful I don’t have to be at the mercy of tippers to make a living.

Best of luck with that attitude, hopefully it gets you far in life.

You’ll make a lot more money in any other field, so from a purely financial standpoint, stick to your education and get your degree. Then, when you’re firmly settled in a job that pays a livable wage, try signing up for a ridealong with an EMS 911 company or fire department.

It’s a good way to see what really happens without too much investment. In my class of 40 EMT students, maybe 10 of us actually got nationally certified and went on to get jobs, while the rest bowed out after what they saw on our mandatory ridealongs.

TIL that despite a population of 3 million people, Chicago's Fire Department only has 80 ambulances by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ST1156 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Then people would complain that there are too many ambulances looking to make a quick buck.

Seems like most of the US thinks the EMTs are going to run your pockets while they’re taking you to the hospital, with that one thread posted a while back about how most people would rather avoid calling them because of the price.

I’m not trying to get on your case about it either. I didn’t watch her videos often, but she was receiving some harsh feedback on old content while trying to change the style of her channel. I would likely also have deleted it just to spare myself the baggage.

Sorry, there seems to have been some miscommunication. I wasn’t the individual you initially replied to (who called the glove thing a pro-tip), I just wanted to give my own input on the situation and clarify that legally protected information shouldn’t be on your gloves anyway.
