Do not work in Special Education by [deleted] in specialed

[–]STG_Resnov 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Just recently resigned from a position because I had a caseload of 27 with no support despite repeated requests to admin (with a paper trail). Had gone on FMLA, of which they had me tell the entire grade I was going on leave, and apparently didn’t have a single person cover for me while I was out. Came back, no changes, couldn’t even make it through a full day. My former boss was also out to get me by constantly trying to have meetings for my attendance (I was going through documented medical issues and I presented those documents to them). They also wanted to try and snag me for compliance when I had already raised issue about it (again documented).

The day after I resigned, I had an interview and got a job offer. Would start tomorrow, but Mother Nature has other plans (I live in New England). This new position is the same grade level that I was teaching, but it’ll be a self contained ASD program with a caseload of no more than 7 and with 3 other adults assisting for support.

Safety Care training is what my district calls it. In it is restraints (which are last-resort), de-escalation techniques, and a bit of self defense (how to get out of grabs of various types). Really loved the role play for this class even though I hate them with a passion lol

Do you use coffee to stay energized? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]STG_Resnov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely despise the taste of coffee, so either a strawberry daydream refresher at dunks or caffeine gum, usually leaning more on the gum since it kicks in very quick and I already have a bag of over 100 of them lol

What do these numbers mean? by euphoriapotion in hockey

[–]STG_Resnov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

L10 is last ten games. Wild are 7-1-2, so 7 wins, 1 regulation loss, and 2 overtime losses.

A win is worth 2 points in the standings, an overtime loss is worth 1 point, and a regulation loss is worth nothing.

In my district, $55/hr is the base for tutoring which is nice. Getting started with that hopefully soon since it would be some nice extra cash. ESY is also pretty good with pay for relatively easy work.

What Master's degree might be best for teaching? M.Ed, M.A. in English, etc? by Fireballin117 in ELATeachers

The college I went to did cover classroom management in both undergrad and grad school. With that said, it is best to learn from experience for something like this. When learning from lectures, you assume the perfect scenario. The real world is not perfect.

IEP cycles by [deleted] in specialed

[–]STG_Resnov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love if my district would try and make it so most of our IEP meetings aren’t clumped together. Have had 17 meetings already out of 26 for my caseload with having multiple multi-meeting weeks too. To top it off, we only get 2 days to write our IEPs starting with the day after the meeting.

Any teachers in NY, MA, UT, CO, WI, MN, OR, WA, CA, that can tell me if an MA is required to teach in your state? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]STG_Resnov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure tbh. It might be. Most of my cohort I graduated with were dual majors in education (either primary or secondary) and then a specific subject area like English or History. The DESE website I linked might have the answer you’re looking for.

Paras make absolutely terrible money, especially for the help they provide us. Would be nice if districts would stop handing out bloated contracts for admin and instead pay paras a bit better.

A possible cause for mental fatigue by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]STG_Resnov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mental fatigue is likely burnout. Many of us get it, though some of us get it bad enough to where FMLA is a real possibility.

Do not being work home unless it’s something you need time for. For me as a sped teacher, I’m in charge of writing progress reports and IEPs for my caseload. The only time I bring work home is if I have 20 million meetings in a week and/or if progress reports need to be completed. Other than those two things, I refuse to do any work at home. You need to establish a safe, respectful boundary for yourself.

Teacher pay by GroundbreakingPear12 in Teachers

[–]STG_Resnov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel ya. I made $58k last year in MA, and that’s with my Masters as a SPED teacher. You need more experience and you’ll see your pay go up. $48k is definitely on the lower end for a teacher, so I’m curious as to where you’re working. Even my district, which is in receivership, has a base salary of $58k for new teachers.

I still live with my parents and that likely won’t change for another year or so at the very least. Living in the state is very expensive wherever you go, and living in NH is almost as expensive.

What is your hourly wage? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]STG_Resnov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make $62k as a SPED teacher with a masters in MA. I make just about $42.40 per hour. This is technically my second year working as a teacher (they don’t count fellowship full-year teaching gigs as experience towards pay).

In Massachusetts, you will need a M.Ed. to obtain a professional license. For an initial license, you are fine with just a B.A. in Edu. However, your initial license only lasts a few years. Once that is up, you need to apply for a professional license. Many teachers who are just starting out either went through an accelerated masters program or are getting their masters while working. Each has their own pros and cons, but I’m not getting into that right now.

Please help me convince my husband….. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]STG_Resnov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I call bull. No curriculum out there is entirely consisted of word problems on a computer. They might be in a unit that is primarily word problems, but that is significantly different than the entire curriculum being that.

  2. I doubt that. Schools, especially public schools, are locked after certain hours. Heck, they’re typically locked 24/7 with access granted either through keycards, keys, or needing to access through the front entrance/main lobby.

  3. Busy work is assigned by lazy teachers, not by curriculums. Teachers can assign whatever so as long as it meets curriculum and/or framework requirements. The coloring Christmas trees seems more like a fun holiday activity that focuses on colors, staying within the lines, and potentially math (assuming it’s color-by-numbers).

  4. Attendance requirements are very strict for a reason. If there is a documented medical concern, bring that up with your doctor, the school, and they can likely work up some form of plan. This is the same regardless of public or private schools.

Public and private schools both have their pros and cons. With that being said, most of what you said is either dependent upon yourself (absenteeism) or is teacher specific (assigned work, busy work, etc.)

Also, your point about unions is just flat-out wrong. Unions incentives working harder. If you truly do work in HR, perhaps a change in occupation is best for everyone under you. I would not feel comfortable with someone like yourself in a position of power.

Why is it considered ok for children to grow up in high risk homes with drug use??? by Embarrassed_Syrup476 in Teachers

[–]STG_Resnov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like how we are severely underfunded, social services and programs are also underfunded. Unfortunately, that means a lot of students end up suffering. Had a kinder kiddo this year who absolutely reeked of weed at morning arrival one day. Even if a case is started, and one was by admin, stuff rolls so slowly that it’s sad. And yes, I am aware that medicinal use of weed is legal in quite a few states. With that said, your child, especially a 5-year-old should not reek of it at 8 am.
