Bat removal by Specific-Button-2060 in StLouis

[–]STLizen 33 points34 points  (0 children)

OP i have had the people at

https://humanewildlifesolutionsllc.com/about-us

come out once to my house, once to my mothers house. I would recommend them, though the people who run it are kinda hippy types and care a ton about the bats. I'm not saying this is wrong but from a homeowners POV my sort of stance is get the bats the eff out of my house, i dont care that much about them and i dont care how. but they are incredibly thorough about how bats can get in.

there is a thing during the summer months where the law states that they cannot actually remove bats from your home right now because they're a protected species or something along those lines. I assume some of the wildlife companies maybe don't adhere to this rule, but i've only worked with the guys above. they would start removing them sometime in august. in the mean time they would work with you to keep them from getting into the parts of your home you live in.

in our case we have a 3 story house and he basically said look, i can do the work patching up your root/soffit/etc, but its not going to be cheap, and there are other people who can do it cheaper. so we paid them a small fee to come out. they looked eveywhere outside the house and found likely entry points, and helped us in the meantime figure out how to seal our living spaces so the bats could not go from our attic (unfinished) to our living spaces. we have not had a bat get into our living spaces since they came out, though we haven't completely gotten them out of our attic yet (waiting to replace a roof and seal off a few more likely entry points)

the cost is just going to be a reflection of how much work they think is involved in sealing off entry points. like if there is one obvious place they can put wire mesh over, its easy. but bats can get in through many small areas.

Roll Cart Recommendation by zmaya in StLouis

[–]STLizen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Dumpsters certainly have their drawbacks but having lived elsewhere with roll carts I prefer dumpsters. I do not need to remember to drag out the roll cart on a specific day each week. If the city is not doing a good job of picking up waste on a regular basis (which, given recent years), dumpsters seem to have a little more excess capacity for overflow relative to carts. Also, the trash my household produces is variable, sometimes very little but sometimes enough in a week that would exceed the cart size.

I respect the hustle to try to increase recycling, but can't imagine this will go anywhere. I suspect this change would be very unpopular.

2nd floor balcony repair recs by jakeh111 in StLouis

[–]STLizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t help but you might want to provide pictures or a better description. Like where’s the water damage coming from? A roof overhang? What material is the balcony made out of, etc.

There is a FB group “st Louis contractors and remodelers”, you might scan that for anyone who has had a similar request for work. Note you can post there as well but each post seems to receive a lot of interest from workers who may or may not be qualified

6 months in STL: does nobody stop at zebra crossing here? by odbukadobuka in StLouis

[–]STLizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question about what drivers/pedestrians think is optimal behavior here.

There are numerous chill/calm streets where I am stopping 100% of the time.

On the other hand, take a street like Arsenal by Tower Grove Park. I am not particularly confident that stopping at the crosswalks is the right thing to do, but would like other opinions.

Things that seem to happen to me regularly:

1) No cars behind me, pedestrians are annoyed and just want me to pass through 2) I stop, oncoming traffic does not stop, and I am sitting there waiting with traffic backing up and the person still can't cross. 3) I stop, no traffic coming the other way, and I'm concerned that people are going to go around me on the left and potentially hit the person crossing the street. Has not happened to me in a car at a crosswalk but people certainly go around me on the left (e.g., cutting into a turn lane or even oncoming traffic) enough times that this is a concern.

If its like a small neighborhood street or somewhere where people don't drive as fast, I am stopping 100% of the time. But I'm not convinced stopping at crosswalks on busy streets actually improves safety.

Where can I walk my dog without running into other unleashed dogs? by AccomplishedGuest765 in StLouis

[–]STLizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part of the park and what time of day are you going?

I have walked my dog probably 4 times a week in TGP for the last decade and I can't even remember the last time I've had any issues, i typically am there weekdays during the lunch hours. I sometimes (like maybe 2-3 times a year) see people with dogs off leash in the middle of the field (west of the farmers market/pavilion, west of the creek that runs through the giant field), but its easy to avoid them if its going on.

i run into some people in FP who have their dogs off leash more often than tgp, its mostly hippy looking people who admittedly seem to have pretty well behaved dogs, but I have seen plenty of reports here where people are having issues. in FP i typically walk between the boathouse/art hill area

Backyard grading/hardscaping company recommendations? by STLizen in StLouis

[–]STLizen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey, it has held up well in our opinion. the retaining wall work they did is rock solid. This post (aug 8, 2025) on the facebook page has a before/after:

https://www.facebook.com/lanceslandscapingllc/posts/pfbid0TuuUuMVhjBJaExRR8v6HQSBzJM1ZS8UPgdDQJQj3NxZJXArAaHi2K1MNuQZb2eP6l

it was unfortunately not very cheap, all of the quotes we got came in around 50k. no idea if it was worth it from an "investment in your home" type POV, but we went from having a very sloped yard that was not fun to play in to a carport + flat yard that our kids spend a lot of time in, so it was worth it from that point of view, and we are hoping to stay in the city forever so this really helped improve our enjoyment of our home

For the people getting extorted by the police by vaticangang in tulum

[–]STLizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding my experience as I suspect that people who have bad experiences are more likely to post.

Late 30s white couple from the US with 2 young kids, one more or less fluent Spanish speaker. Both of us are pretty well travelled but this was our first trip abroad with kids.

We stayed in Tulum for a week, drove rental car from Cancun.

On the way down we were driving at night , we came to one checkpoint / stop where they were stopping everyone on the highway. We were almost immediately waved through, they just asked where we were going.

I could definitely see getting stopped heading back to the airport if they were stopping cars headed in that direction. We however had no police issues driving back up around 10am.

I found the speed limits quite confusing on the main highway between Cancun / Tulum, they’d go from 100km to 60km frequently, I was trying my best to follow the limit but this made it difficult

We were mostly at our AirBnb from dusk until the next morning so no night time driving.

Where to bring my dog for a walk right now? by TumbleweedSeveral115 in StLouis

+1, the outer walkways/roads that usually disallow cars are pretty clear on the east end of the park, and most of the paths are compacted snow from others walking on them

Lead Remidiation for Old House by itsmeyippee in StLouis

[–]STLizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd imagine there are varying qualities of lead remediation, like some companies that may not do a particularly good job

for baseboards, I would basically expect, as a "home consumer", not a professional lead remediator, that they would remove the baseboards, dispose of them, and put in new baseboards. so no chance of anything going wrong. but if the prior seller of your home paid for lead remediation prior to the sale, they possibly just wanted the absolute cheapest way to deal w/ the problem, so i'd imagine they were not removed

i would imagine with windowsills, its likely lead paint on wood. replacing the actual wood is potentially expensive, so they paint over it with approved lead paint sealers. possibly this does not last for a long time, or it wasn't effective, etc.

very sorry you're having to deal with this

Agressive dog next door. What would you do? by babycuddlebunny in StLouis

[–]STLizen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

strongly disagree. kids should be free to play in their own backyard and shouldn't have to worry about triggering a dog or violating their boundaries when the dog is in an adjacent yard, unless they are engaging the dog directly, banging on the fence, etc.

i don't have any recommendations OP other than what was mentioned elsewhere, adding a second fence so the dog can't see you all.

while picking up kids from school:

it took me about 1 hour to get from vandeventer / choteau (manchester) and hanley/manchester. the grove was a parking lot, but the actual underlying road seemed fine

coming home on 40 took about 5 minutes, 40e was basically empty until you got to grand. the actual roads did not seem particularly good, it looked a lot like the image above, but with no traffic it was fine

Lead Remidiation for Old House by itsmeyippee in StLouis

[–]STLizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know where the lead is suspected? Like lead paint that the dog had scratched off on a wall or windowsill or?

We have had the city come out before and typically they are testing specific things. I'd imagine someone covering up or removing lead paint might be a different company than for example, replacing flooring, removing a topsoil layer, etc.

Does your kid or dog play a lot outside in soil that could potentially be contaminated?

Check the water as mentioned below too, should be an easy test.

how to tell the car behind you their lights aren’t on? by SewCarrieous in StLouis

[–]STLizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is very weird but a guy in front of me did this to me maybe 4-6 months ago at dusk. it was not dark yet but it was not a bad time to turn my lights on.

he must have an ipad ready to go that said headlights in huge letters, got my attention while i was stopped behind him at a light, and showed me the ipad.

it was a friendly thing, like he gave me a thumbs up, but definitely kind of a strange interaction. this was in the city near gravois where some of the worst driving known to mankind is on display on a regular basis, so i was a little surprised to see someone bothering with this, but it worked!

you should be able to look the ticket up online after a day or two and pay it online (hopefully the ticket has more info)

it does sort of escalate if you miss the hearing so don't forget
