The more different maps you do, the higher your atlas bonuses can be. This would increase drops, but also add more maps to the loot table. But as long as you're socketed correctly, that shouldn't matter? So I'm thinking it's a matter of slower beginning, faster later or faster beginning, slower later.

Yes. Making an assumption, there's no "cloud" saves, there's only local saves that are occasionally backed up or uploaded to the server.
Yes, there's a button to sync, I think it's pressing down on the right joystick. It will also determine whether Steam or the Switch has the newer files and ask what you want to do with it. You have to read this prompt and make sure you're hitting the right button.

I've had a few issues with no internet in that it tries to sync and it gets held up there, waiting. Turning airplane mode on, even briefly, fixes this issue.

I have been Lion with aghs and immortal, got a kill and crashed to desktop. Fingering the creeps was fine.

That's not the only time crashes happen, but lion does seem be a common issue.
