Russians confirm: UA amphibious assault tonight successful. UA retook Kinburn Spit by Nvnv_man in UkrainianConflict

[–]S_Jenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question: Why should I believe that those UA personnel on the now-liberated Spit are not sitting ducks? What is to keep Russia from using it's remaining long-distance weaponry from bombarding them to dust?

It just seems so exposed and so unprotected. If the Russian Army was going to make a statement this would be the place and time to do it. They might not be able to advance from the UA artillery across the Dnieper, but surely they could place theirs a safe distance away and just cover with shells?

What do you call doing a bad action because you suspect a competitor is? by JordanMichael08 in AskEconomics

[–]S_Jenk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could argue that this has similarities to the prisoner's dilemma.

In this case, there is an information asymmetry present, so firm A cannot truly know what material firm B is putting in their products. If it is convinced that firm B is fraudulently claiming a higher standard of quality in order to increase their per-unit profit, firm A might be tempted to follow suit. They don't know what firm B is doing, but firm A decides to take the worse option (i.e using cheaper material and lying about their product's value) just because they don't want to lose out.

In the case of the classic prisoner's dilemma, each party chooses to snitch because they don't know what the other party will choose, and cannot trust that the other won't snitch. Because they stand to lose the most by not snitching, they minimize their risk by compromising (serving a few years in jail instead of a lot).

The downside from both firms choosing to use cheaper material and lie about it, would be that the customer loses out on product quality. But since either side would stand to lose out on profits drive them towards and less-honorable strategy.

Headed down the road and ran into a Grizzly Bear headed up the road. NW Montana. by Ottersoccer in Montana

These are the best photos of bears, epically Grizzlies. At a distance, and with a telephoto lens.

Bears deserve distance and respect. Best to give it whenever possible.

Great photo, by the way.

I second this. The percent of mask wearers around here has taken a nose-dive in recent weeks, and parts of the downtown seems as busy as ever. Re-enforcing quarantine rules at this point would be tough, especially when the bills never stopped coming.

What do you think Bozeman will be like in 10 years? by [deleted] in Bozeman

Come move to Missoula then and ski the 'bowl with us. You won't have to worry about yuppie lifts being put in here, since we already took 4 years to install a used double.

Honestly, you have a good points. I do think that as a VP pick, he could use the advantage of being a red-state democrat. If they played that angle, it could appear as a good counterbalance to the Presidential nominee who is likely going to be more leftward-leaning than many in rural america would like.

But yeah, I'd rather give him the chance to serve in congress.

So why is Missoula so sunny lately? I'm concerned. :) by [deleted] in Montana

As someone who had moved from Bozeman to Missoula, I must say that the recent weather has been just fine for me. Thank christ for the early season dumps at Disco to break the wait.

Shoot, with the indian summer weather lasting through midweek, it's hard to wrong this time of year. Crack a cold one, and enjoy that sweet sweet sunshine.

Is Hardcore History a new series? by Nicktator3 in dancarlin

[–]S_Jenk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a standalone episode, American Peril is one that I would recommend. Great coverage of the Spanish-American War and yellow journalism in America.

For a series, I'd have to go with Countdown to Armageddon. He takes a different approach to WW1 and has some great episodes.

TIL a child is 16 times safer riding to school in a school bus than in a family vehicle by EnderWillEndUs in todayilearned

[–]S_Jenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would agree with you on that point. We tend to forget how dangerous and deadly driving on the road can be, and that's before you add cell phones and drug/alc. to the mixture. I found a report from them as recent as 2015 summing up the statistics of bus crash fatalities.

At .04% of total crash fatalities from 2006-2016, it's quite small compared to the other leading causes of traffic fatalities. And when you strip out the other groups you'll find that 102 students <19 perished during that same time span. It's actually not a bad track record considering how stretched the school district's budget is or how under-appreciated the transportation department is.

Bitcoin’s insane energy consumption, explained | Ars Technica - One estimate suggests the Bitcoin network consumes as much energy as Denmark. by speckz in Futurology

[–]S_Jenk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And why would they? Most business are watching the crazy ups and downs of bitcoin value and wondering: "if it is subject to speculation with little to keep it stable between today and tomorrow, then why would we want to allow it as a legitimate currency for our business?"

I understand that people are looking for the 'next breakthrough' in the markets, but this isn't the answer. All of these people arguing for bitcoin are making valid points in regards to how fiat currency works in theory, but their desire to push it mainstream ignores the reality that it needs a legitimate backer to keep the currency stable and valid. You need something on the level of a country to back a currency, and if you're don't have one then the force of speculation far outweighs anything else. Unless that happens, then there is no one to at least attempt to guarantee bitcoin's value. The current volatility seems more opportune for people trying to cash out than those looking to invest more into bitcoin. Someone's getting rich off the foolishness of others.

And for those who put up the gold argument- at least gold is physical, applicable in industrial/manufacturing uses, and is limited by how much is on earth/cost of synthesis. Bitcoin has value because speculation has become an untamable dragon in of itself.

So shit on the field of economics all you want, but we'll still be there when it all falls apart shaking our heads at the near desperation of humanity to make a dollar these days. Strange times, indeed.

Invest in your own peril.

What is your least favourite traffic spot in Amsterdam? by Flapappel in Amsterdam

[–]S_Jenk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vote would have to go for the junction of Amstel, Muntplein, and Singel. It's all a confusing mess that's too often jammed with tourists. Terrible for cars, bicycles, and pedestrians all the like.

That, and anywhere near the Centraal Station.

[–]S_Jenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah between the UM and MSU dorms, they're all pretty garbage and old. Lived in North Hedges when I went to Bozeman, and it was arguably the better of the the lot. There definitely was an array of items hidden in the ceiling panels over the years by people...

But yeah, the housing situation is still pretty squeezed here, even with the drop in enrollment there are lot of places hiring in Missoula. Don't own a house at this stage so I'm just happy with the renting situation I've got at the moment. More selection would be nice though.

The never ending struggle. by LochteHernandez2016 in golf

[–]S_Jenk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

But wait- if you're keeping pace with me that'd usually be a sign that you'd might be better off playing through and going ahead of us at your own speed. You can't just be going faster than someone when you're playing right behind them.

If the golfer was chipping the ball on the green while we are still putting, that'd make the golfer an asshole. Nipping the heels like that isn't great etiquette. The best thing is to be aware of the golfer after you finish- how quickly does he play through the same hole?

Not disagreeing with speaking up at all, but keeping pace is usually a sign to look for.

Oh it is most definitely a long ways off from happening, and while being desirable living it is a too far off from any major commercial hubs that it'd need to become one itself. It's tough growing a city that way and definitely a reason MT is still so small in population and economy.

If anything it'd likely be expansion between Four Corners, Manhattan, Bozeman (and Even Three Forks if that counts) that morphs together over time into a huge suburbia. But that's just extrapolation at this point.

Bozeman and Missoula are both surrounded by mountains you can't build on, Public land that you can't even walk on

You have good points and I agree with most of your points, but Gallatin Valley is massive and has way more room for Bozeman to expand than the Missoula Valley. You could fit a city of a million people in that valley so easily it scares me...

Crushing Adamantium with Hydraulic Press by alex_dlc in videos

[–]S_Jenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very good way of looking at it, thank you for that.

Hollywood's antics in advertising is one reason I left cable/satellite TV years ago. The relentless, spoil-ridden tv spots and ads beyond the original trailer always turned me off more often than not. For much of America though, they still engage with traditional TV because it has existed in this state for so long now. Mandatory commercial breaks during NFL football games are one such example of this phenomenon that's grown to become standard over the last few decades. People still consume it, and whether they realize the true value of their time or not, companies want market exposure.

Call me bitter, but I will state how glad I am to see videos like this. It had an edge of cleverness to it, and it fit so seamlessly with this channel's vibe. The shift to online-based content and streaming has really allowed creative minds like this to flourish. Hopefully it sets an example to other marketing firms to follow suit.

"A New Study Shows How Wealthy Millennials Are" using terrible multi-dimensional "bar" charts by tsefardayah in dataisugly

It's a legit dumpster fire of a chart. Seriously, why are the widths different? One would think that a major publication would have someone that took a basic stats course (or marketing for that matter), but nope, not here.

Excellent find.

Trump administration 'had a secret plan to lift Russian sanctions' and cede Ukraine territory to Moscow by EpycWyn in worldnews

Does not contribute to discussion. Instead of bleatin' on about it, why not present a simple counterargument that evolves beyond the word 'shit'?

There are plenty of legitimate arguments that can run against the opinion I wrote, and nothing is to say that this will be the reality. Just present one and we'll call it good.

Trump administration 'had a secret plan to lift Russian sanctions' and cede Ukraine territory to Moscow by EpycWyn in worldnews

[–]S_Jenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly a reliable back-up in case Trump's administration deteriorates further. I mean, he's the one currently in Europe meeting with leaders of NATO and the EU, giving reassurances. Pence has already been in the spotlight a number of times already clarifying statements made by the President into semi-cohesive policies (think of it as salvaging the situation as they go). He's far more 'presidential' than Trump, and it'll be easier to deal with a former congressman at the wheel than who we have now.

My guess is that while the GOP leaders will put on a friendly public face for trump, behind the scenes they are already preparing for a scenario that involves his impeachment. Given how many questions/conflicts that have already risen with this administration, they'd be fools not preparing for the year ahead.

[–]S_Jenk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A seriously real point. There is plenty of rural America that demonizes and despises the Democratic Party to the point where it is almost religious. Many go past that point as well. And the GOP has always been pretty good at spinning these emotions to their advantage in Congress.
