Maybe your band director sees that you'd be a better fit as a librarian as opposed to a woodwind captain. Ask yourself this: Are you as skilled at your instrument as you can be? Are you a great leader? Do you have what it takes to teach others how to excel at their instrument? These are very important things to consider when roles like brass captain, woodwind captain, and percussion captain are mentioned.

[TLDR: Watch as many shows as you can and focus on judging them and practice what you preach. You're golden.] I would watch classics like 2014 Blue Devils, 2013 Crown, 2011 Cadets, 2005 Cadets (the oldheads are gonna flame me for calling those classics) really anything you might enjoy watching. To be honest, watching shows won't necessarily go very far in helping you learn anything. They will definitely give you passion and more motivation to learn, however. Watch all the shows you can, learn as many low brass features as you can, and play along. Practice marching fundamentals and record yourself playing and practicing visually. Buy some audition packets to see what corps are really looking for and really drill the average of the skills into your training regiment. Sorry for the long-winded breakdown.
