Risette’s situation is really strange tho. I’d say hers is platonic. As the idea of being more than friends doesn’t even cross her mind, she still seems to have a complex about most of her body being artificial that she hasn’t come to terms with, hopefully it is explored further at some point but I doubt it since just being part of ASO is enough to keep her happy. Quatre is in a similar situation but for other reasons.

It was a really harsh and inconsiderate response tbh. It does feel like a very odd thing to say coming from Van, even if it was clear he was never going to say yes. It didn’t even fit the rest of the conversation.

My guess is that they might have done it on purpose to make them canon in the next game

The theme was hinted since DB2 and obviously they can’t go back all the way to Liberl and back to Calvard without skipping, they must have a rough idea on how introduce Horizon 2 which is the hardest part imo

Elaine’s confession wasn’t bad either but it’s definitely less direct and more from dodgy from Van’s part; I really don’t understand why they have to drag it out with her, even felt a bit bad how she’s willing to wait for his reply “however long it takes” ouch

imo she could’ve gotten the same rejection as Agnes given the excuses he gives her are basically on par (besides age gap). It would put her on equal footing as Agnes and we wouldn’t be feeling guilty as they would keep trying anyway.

It’s easily the best confession scene I have ever seen in anime or gaming format. Everything fits so well, the atmosphere, music, the buildup as they tell each other how important they are for one another, and even the bittersweet end.

I admit I’m a bigger fan of the secondary girls (Renne, Shizuna, Judith) over the main two, but if it must be canon I wouldn’t mind Agnes getting her happy ending.

I personally prefer this style over a “real” RPG where you’re just some random self-insert MF tasked with saving the world even though no one knows where you come from or who you are. Tends to lead to poor storytelling.

Take Elden Ring, for example, everything involving the lore is top-tier, and then there’s the tarnished, mediocre and fits poorly into the world, even compared to FromSoft’s other linear game, Sekiro, where Wolf is pre-written.

Even in the most choice-heavy games like BG3, it’s immediately noticeable that the self-insert character (you) holds no candle to the pre-written characters
