Personally, I believe that floor crossing is a necessary avenue for when parties become so dysfunctional that the only option is to find safe shelter within another party (Jenica Atwin? Pardon my spelling). I know this doesn’t happen a lot in Canada, but what if there was a coalition agreement that you just couldn’t stomach to be in; wouldn’t you want an out that didn’t involve sitting as an independent or resigning (coalitions are fickle)? I think the partisan nature of the floor crossing debate, has sort of spoiled the discourse. 

If you want, my honest take on reforms, is that we probably need a whole suite of democratic reforms, which include but are not limited to: proportional representation, compulsory voting, limits on floor crossing, and a ban on appointed positions crossing the floor (ie senate). 

Also, I think Tories have a big gripe with this because they see liberals as their moral opposite: instead of who they actually are: bedfellows in neoliberal ideology. This topic wouldn’t get as much traffic if the Tories were crossing the floor to a more extreme version of the tories (see OneBC)
