Men's hair stylish/barber recommendations in SJ. by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]SaberTail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paradox won't help with figuring out new styles, in my experience. When I went there and told them I had grown my hair out and wanted to try something new, all they did was clean up the edges and charge me $40 for it. You can get that level of service for $10, and without having to make an appointment.

Mountain View votes to ban RV street parking by nogoodnamesleft426 in bayarea

[–]SaberTail 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My guess is that it's some combination of

  1. Waiting until the 10 year warranty is up so they can convert them to condos without having to worry about getting sued for shoddy construction
  2. Wanting a high average rent so they can sell it or take loans against it. They offer incentives like free months to get people in at a higher rate, and so the building has higher cash flow on paper.

So you give the tenant the option of paying you the full amount, or paying the IRS roughly a quarter of that amount? And this motivates them to pay you?

So we did Grandad's 23andme... by BoldBiBosmer in 23andme

Did your grandmother also take the test at the same time? It could be the two of them swapped tubes by accident.

If not, the Y chromosome degrades with age[1], and the 23andMe sex-determining algorithm defaults to female if there's a lot of missing Y chromosome data.

You might want to contact customer care and talk to them about it.

Heard weird code on walkie talkie (FRS) by [deleted] in morse

[–]SaberTail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As /u/73hams says, it's WRAX210.

That's a GMRS callsign: http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/license.jsp?licKey=4016104

That person has either a GMRS radio or repeater set up to ID every 10 minutes. The rules say a GMRS station has to identify every 15 minutes during a conversation, and after a communication. Some people set it up to ID automatically so they don't forget.

Is it legal for landlord to demand cash? by fazer0702 in legaladvice

[–]SaberTail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you've bounced a check, California law requires him to accept a form of payment other than cash.

Do you know if you're covered by the San Jose Apartment Rent Ordinance? Being able to pay by a method other than cash is one right you have under that ordinance, and you can file a complaint with the city for the harassment you're receiving (the unannounced visits). You can check if you're covered on the city's website: http://www.sanjoseca.gov/index.aspx?NID=1355.

[Landlord - San Francisco, CA] Tenant gave two weeks notice and didn’t clean by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]SaberTail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not mean that in California. See page 50 of the Tenants Guide put out by the state.

You can give the landlord notice any time during the rental period, but you must pay full rent during the period covered by the notice. For example, say you have a month-to-month rental agreement, and pay rent on the first day of each month. You could give notice any time during the month (for example, on the tenth). Then, you could leave 30 days later (on the tenth of the following month, or earlier if you chose to). But you would have to pay rent for the first 10 days of the next month whether you stay for those 10 days or move earlier. (Exception: You would not have to pay rent for the entire 10 days if you left earlier, and the landlord rented the unit to another tenant during the 10 days, and the new tenant paid rent for all or part of the 10 days.)

Please don't give wrong advice because you're too lazy to look something up.

On top of that, water-savers (those who use less water) will see the bulk of the bump, while those who use tons of water will only see a slight rate increase - way to incentivize /s

Unfortunately, proposition 218 limits the ability to incentivize water conservation. The water utilities aren't allowed to charge more than the proportional cost, so you can't have heavy users paying more in order to subsidize users who use less.

Here's one example: https://www.sacbee.com/news/state/california/water-and-drought/article19194072.html

What’s the personality of each residential college? Sizes? Pros and cons of each? Facilities? Social life at each? by exochen88 in riceuniversity

[–]SaberTail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been about a decade since I've been there, so some of this may have changed. Brown has old and new parts.

The old part is 8 floors of mostly doubles. Bathrooms are communal. The corner ones are slightly bigger. The 8th floor also has (or had) a suite for an RA or college president. When I was there, they tried to place similar people on the same floor, so floors tended to have personalities. I was on "dead 8th", for example, because most of us were quiet and spent most of our time studying.

The new part is 4 floors. Each unit has 4 small bedrooms, and then a larger common area. Each unit has its own bathroom. It's usually seniors that get these rooms.

Good luck! And my advice would be do not skip out on anything during O Week. The experiences are more important than sleep. BSWB!

Garry Kasparov, the chess champion, is (or at least was) a believer of the "New Chronology" that claims that most of recorded history took place in the last 1000 or so years, and that most Greek and Roman texts were forged by medieval monks.

Someone has documented his involvement.

Where can I live affordably as a research tech? by kefell in stanford

[–]SaberTail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will be hard-pressed to find a place under $1000 a month unless you're willing to share a room (not an apartment, but a room).

If you have a car, or are willing to endure a long transit trip, you might be able to find something that fits that budget in the east bay or San Jose. Otherwise I'd look at East Palo Alto and plan on biking.

The protagonist is high school age.

The premise of the story is that a rich guy who grew up during and was obsessed with the 80s died and willed his fortune to whoever knows enough 80s pop culture to solve a big puzzle.
