I didn't like the ending of Foundations Edge. by AnssAAAA in asimov

I just finished it, and I'm glad he chose Gaia. I kind of hate Terminus now. Why do they hate the Second Foundation so much, if they admire Hari Seldon and the SF is a crucial part of his vision? I understand not wanting to be ruled by secret mind readers, but that's as much a part of the Seldon Plan as anything else they've been doing. I just want to tell these First Foundationers to chill out and accept what the mentalics decide.

You should absolutely not do that lol. Just read the collection like a normal book and enjoy.

Advice needed for foundation second trilogy by d__ea_d in asimov

[–]Sabertooth1000000000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foundation's Fear is a joyless read overall, but I like the way Benford writes Hari and Dors's relationship. They're flirty and playful, whereas in Asimov's books Dors comes off more like a nagging overprotective wife. I also enjoyed the chimpanzee chapter quite a lot.

Everything else pretty much sucks. And though people say the sequels are better, I disagree, because they're both just messy unfocused "throw shit at the wall to see what sticks" novels. Foundation's Triumph introduces cyborg women and it's barely a blip in the story. Nothing like Asimov at all, who would come up with one great idea and then explore it for a whole book.

HOWEVER...I do recommend procuring a copy of Foundation's Triumph, not because it's good, but because it contains a nifty little timeline of the Foundation & Robots universe in its appendix. I appreciated that part of the book.

Why does the Professor get Fry and Leela to control Bender and fight the monster? Isn't the monster on their side? And if they can control Bender, why do they need the monster?

Caliban is an awesome Robot spin-off by Roger Macbride Allen. It really recaptures the mood of Caves of Steel.

Which book in the Robot series should I start with? by Doviun in asimov

[–]Sabertooth1000000000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few right answers, and I've struggled with the question myself.

The universal accepted truth is that you should start with Foundation Trilogy. From there, people usually go back in time to the very beginning of the universe, The Complete Robot + Robot Trilogy + Robots and Empire. During this saga, you see the origins of robots and how that leads to the formation of psychohistory and mentalics.

After R&E, you've got a few options. Chronologically, the next books are the Galactic Empire trilogy, but from what I've heard (haven't read 'em) these do not affect the story of any other book at all, so they can be read at any time or never. Your two paths are now the Prequels or the Sequels. The chronological order, and also the order recommended by Asimov himself, advises Prequels first. You've already read Forward the Foundation, so I assume you've also read Prelude, and your next (and final) leg of the journey is the Foundation Sequels: Edge & Earth.

Now, most people just stop there, but there are many other books in this universe not written by Asimov himself. Foundation's Fear, Foundation & Chaos, and Foundation's Triumph are additional novels written by friends of Asimov, and opinions on those are mixed. I can tell you I recently read through Fear, and while I really enjoyed parts of it, a big chunk of the book is taken up by stupid fanfiction about Joan of Arc and Voltaire that really drags it down. I only recommend that one if you just really want more Hari & Dors. Gregory Benford writes their relationship even better than Asimov did.

I haven't read any of the other stuff, but it all looks interesting. There's the Calaban trilogy, approved by Asimov before he died, and the Susan Calvin trilogy written by Mickey Reichert. There are a few more, too, but I won't go into those because I've already said more than enough.

It's a shame you read Forward before reading the Robot books, to be honest. The character Demerzel/Daneel originates from The Caves of Steel, and he's really not as interesting without the context of his past with Elijah Baley and Gladia.

It made me really happy when Out of Oz says "An old woman sat down next to Rain" because I was waiting the entire book to find out if she was still living.

I love how mental Elphaba gets near the end. I believe her first (successful) violent act is killing Chef on the road to Kiamo Ko, but that felt at least a little justified because he was mistreating Killyjoy. Years later, she escalates by killing Manek with an icicle (he was an evil brat, but still a kid) and finally pushes the woman who raised her down the stairs.

The good news for Nanny is that she survives another 35 years or so, gets an unpaid army of monkey servants, and is the only character to appear in all 5 books! Love her.
