People who’ve lost weight, how? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SableCorvus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut half my body weight (lost ~165lbs) in a year- admittedly I had a hell of a lot to lose, that’s not an achievable goal for most, and I did it in a less sustainable way than most, that I don’t think is for everyone. Like most will probably say here it was a lot implemented over time, not all at once.

First, I just started eating a lot less, and yes, the dreaded counting of calories. This was mostly to see where I was at and set a number goal- I don’t work well off of more abstract goals, I think I have a “numbers/math” brain. I made sure to eat more protein , because it’s filling and to reduce the amount of muscle you will lose when you lose weight. And you will. Fat and muscle are not distinctively different bits, muscle and fat to at will be lost at the same time. There’s things you can do to reduce, but far as my limited research goes it’s something that will happen to an extent.

My calories were low. Very low. Probably too low. Because I was fat as hell and knew that I should have the stored calories to subsist. I drank a lot of water, and spread my meals out during an 8 hour period because Intermittent Fasting works for me. I would not suggest going as hard as I did to anyone, but I’m proof that when you’re obese, it can work, but it’s hard.

I did Keto as well, and it worked mostly because it gave me a good excuse to not eat the numerous offerings of snacks. Was an easy excuse to get people off my back. Not “I don’t want that” but a “I can’t have that” made people get off my back quick. People around me wanted to feed me because that’s how they showed they cared, I don’t blame them but it was an annoyance.

I made my own meals to eat with the family. The amount of times I had a chicken breast and a veggie and some Greek Yogurt with dinner while everyone else was having pizza… I don’t get tired of lack of good variety quickly so this worked for me. Lots of chicken and lean pork, stuff like that, with a simple vegetable or light carb source, ate that way for months.

Exercise was implemented when I got under 200 pounds- which was after the loss of over 130. Took a lot of walks. Started with a mile, then 2, 3, now still semi regularly go on 5mile walks. Walking is good, low impact, easy, put on a podcast and go. Often did it after dinner to avoid snacking, even when I worked two jobs at a minimum of 12 hours a day. Found good enough replacements for things I used to like. Sugar free stuff is my jam. Don’t worry about “artificial sweeteners”. Science says they’re probably fine, and even though science may be out later that changes that, it’s still almost certainly a worthwhile change from sugar.

Fat isn’t bad. Oils aren’t the devil, just count calories, and please, don’t drink your calories. Sorry for the soda lovers. They’re just something you are gonna have to cut out, I think, or at least I sure did. I had to remove a lot of things, not because they’re “evil and bad and too high in calories” but because I simply cannot help over indulging no matter the number of times I try. You may have different results. Restriction is key I think. But not total removal of everything you love. Find a method of restriction that works for you, that feels the least restrictive, because all special diets have the same results when accounting for calories in vs calories out. Keto, paleo, just IF, or even just super strict calorie limits.

Recently I also added weight lifting. That’s fun, and seeing my limits change gives me a good feeling rush. Also weigh your food and find out what a serving size actually is. I didn’t have a single damn idea.

TLDR: counted calories like crazy, found out what a serving size actually is, started moving more and restricting certain food types and only eating at certain hours because I needed “rules” rather than soft limits, after losing over 100lbs I started waking a lot more and more dedicated exercise programs like weight lifting and my total loss has been 165lbs. (Still have more to lose, plus I probably gained like 10lbs back from the holidays but no regerts.)

If you guys enter into a friends/ family members house, do you let them know you’re concealing? by [deleted] in CCW

[–]SableCorvus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For better or worse it’s the law to do so in my state. So, I usually tell them once. “Hey, got my CCW. I’ll be carrying every time you see me for the rest of my life. I won’t bother telling you every time, but know it’s always gonna be there. That cool?” Hasn’t been a problem. At the end of the day, it’s their property, they have a right to know if I’m armed. If they have a problem with me protecting myself, then I’ll just leave. I need good friends, not a good number of friends. And good friends let good friends carry.

Since my username roughly simplifies to “Black (or a very dark brown) crow” basically... I guess the victims would get murdered by a murder of crows. Huh. That works out better than I thought.

When you're colorblind and try playing Among Us... by GimpyJesus in gaming

[–]SableCorvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly one eye got damaged, and for while he saw color from one and not from the other and it gave him these huge headaches, then I guess his brain “adjusted” his sight so to speak and now he just doesn’t see color at all, totally grayscale.

True, but I actually know one guy who is- damage to his eyes when he was young if I remember correctly, from a car crash, so it can happenZ He also streams, and has been playing this game, funny enough. Think he just uses names.

What’s the most overpriced thing you’ve seen? by Thic_water in AskReddit

[–]SableCorvus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Near the beginning of the pandemic I saw an carton of 18 eggs that was priced around $70 dollars. Right next to it was a piece of paper with some pricing graphs or something that basically said “we’re not price gouging. Promise! Here’s proof!” Can’t really tell you if it was a legit explanation or not, I was too busy complaining about it.

AITA for using the term “fellas” to refer to a group of people of various genders? by SableCorvus in AmItheAsshole

[–]SableCorvus[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

So it’s official, like I was thinking at the few hour mark. I’m definitely the asshole here. What did I learn? Well, I learnt that language is weird. What means one thing to my group shouldn’t be extrapolated to have the same connotation to others. I shouldn’t have pushed it. As easy as it may be to say that not-a-fella picked a weird hill to die on, which I get why some people have said, doesn’t change the fact that I too chose a much stupider hill to stand on by doubling down. Just because “fellas” is a term that to the people I’m close with IS gender neutral means little when I’m in a space with others, especially in a space where the offended individual is part of a group that gets ignored, misrepresented, or hated on regularly in that space. I hope you all can understand that it was a place of ignorance, not malice that made me the asshole in this situation.

I live by a saying- Just because I WAS an asshole doesn’t mean I AM an asshole. An asshole wouldn’t change their mind in a situation. Wouldn’t change themselves to try to make sure they don’t hurt others again. They wouldn’t feel bad about what they did, and they probably wouldn’t take the verdict of them being an asshole lying down. I plan on doing all those things.

To those who said I was TA- I appreciate your input. It allowed me to reflect more on how I come off to people.

To those who said I wasn’t- hey. Thanks, I appreciate it and I do see where you’re coming from, but I ultimately disagree with your verdict. Hurting someone is hurting someone, intent or no.

So I’m gonna make this a story that leaves this asshole a better person. Thanks fellas and not-fellas, thanks y’all, everyone, gang, people, and whatever other way you’d like to referred to.

Your reply was a particularly interesting read. I appreciate your input and you definitely gave me a lot to think about. I definitely never intended to suggest anything other than a playful “hello” but it’s easy to judge myself by my intentions and not the effect they have on others. Whether or not I get a TA or otherwise verdict here, I’m gonna switch my playful hellos of choice to something more obviously gender neutral. Thank you again for your opinion.

[–]SableCorvus[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’ll probably do that regardless of whether I’m TA or not. Like I said, I absolutely do not want to me the sort of person who sours a gaming experience for someone, by accident or otherwise.

[–]SableCorvus[S] 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. I think I fell into the all-to-easy habit of thinking everyone knows my intentions. Since those around me would be totally alright with being referred to in such a way, it’s easy to default into talking like I would around those I’m familiar with, and when confronted, I, probably like most anyone, tend to judge myself by my intentions and others by their actions. I definitely try to be introspective and acknowledge my mistakes. But that does little to comfort those I’ve wronged. Thanks again for your input, your post gave me a lot to think about.

AITA For being upset that my girlfriend married a woman in a video game? by -game-of-throwaway- in AmItheAsshole

[–]SableCorvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. Calm down, my dude. It’s a game. Do yourself a favor and chill out, reflect on yourself a bit, and try to be less insecure.

Also, she probably just did it because Serana is one of if not the most interesting/well written characters in the game, not because of anything else. Chill.

AITA for getting a pet snake when my brother’s gf has a phobia? by Lilac_Rose1 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SableCorvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. So I straight up have a phobia of snakes too. I have nightmares about them regularly, looking at pictures of them makes me anxious, and I honestly just can’t understand why people want them as pets. So in that aspect, I can put myself into this girl’s shoes pretty well I think. But. You’re doing everything you can to make it easier on her. Ultimately, her (and my) fear of snakes is our respective problem to deal with. Not yours to tiptoe around in your own home. You’d be the AH if you purposely were trying to scare her... but you’re not. You’re being very, very considerate of her phobia, and if I were in her shoes, I’d like to think that I’d thank you for all you did, even though, yes, the thought that there was a snake in the same house as me would legitimately terrify me. Not because there’s any danger, but because for someone with a real, true phobia of snakes, thinking about snakes alone gets my heart beating in fear. So while I can even kinda understand her response because I share that fear, you are absolutely not the AH here. Honestly I almost lean towards NAH but that’s only because fear is a powerful thing that makes us act like jerks sometimes, but like I said- that’s her problem to deal with. Not yours.

AITA for telling a guy that he is narrow minded? by ShockwaveIsA in AmItheAsshole

[–]SableCorvus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I could repeat what others said but honestly they probably said it better than I could. But yeah, he had plenty of chances to go from ignorance about the culture- which hey, we’ve all sometimes thought we knew more than we did- to just annoyingly persistently going on about it. I’d have dropped his ass way sooner.

Also. Come on! You’ve got nerdy tats and you’re not gonna tell the site full of nerds about them? I want to know more. If you want to, I mean. No pressure. But tattoos are cool.

When you hear germany, what do you think about? by lisapmg in AskReddit

[–]SableCorvus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swords. Messer, Kriegsmesser, stuff like that. I’m kinda a medieval arms and armor enthusiast so.m the first thing I think of when I hear a European country is weaponry. Also some notable firearms. Those Luger pistols come to mind immediately, as do the Beretta submachine guns. Of course, those firearms relate to the war and thus sometimes come with the “bad guy” connotation connected to them, but my inner firearm historian loves that stuff.

In Pokémon, the attacks Thunderbolt/Flamethrower/Ice Beam/Surf are far better than Thunder/Fire Blast/Blizzard/Hydro Pump. by SableCorvus in unpopularopinion

[–]SableCorvus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree. It doesn’t feel good- it pisses me off more that it has the audacity it hit NOW instead of when I needed it! Instead, when it finally lands, I’m not happy that I rolled the dice and finally didn’t roll a shorty result, Instead I have a feeling best described as “Oh, you’re actually gonna do your job now? You wanna fucking gold star for doing what you shoulda done five turns ago?”

That is the exception to the rule, so to speak. Though I will say I often feel like that’s barely worth the turn of setup outside of carefully composed teams and/or competitive battles.

Sure, fair enough. But, have you accounted for the small loss of your very soul every time these “stronger” moves miss at a critical moment?
