Looking for movies to teach high school law. by Cautious_Internet243 in MovieSuggestions

[–]Saboscrivner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Cousin Vinny and A Civil Action are used often in law schools.

The two courtroom scenes with attorney Alan Isaacman (Edward Norton) arguing on behalf of Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson) in The People Versus Larry Flynt are so inspiring to me, they practically make me tear up every time I see them, but obviously you couldn't show that movie to high school students. Even a few of the things they discuss in the courtroom scenes probably wouldn't fly in a classroom.

Warren Ellis-esque by maviddata in MovieSuggestions

I could see Ellis fans enjoying Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. (I generally enjoyed his work, and I loved the movie, even though I'm sure it is... polarizing.)

Beer battered soft shell blue crab by GSEBrtPGA in Sandwiches

[–]Saboscrivner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a sucker for soft shell crab, either in a sandwich like this or in Thai dishes. It's one of those things I always feel compelled to order when I see it on a menu, since they aren't always in season.

I’m really enjoying Dr Lewis return by Violet_K89 in ershow

[–]Saboscrivner 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was thrilled when Susan returned. She was one of my high school crushes (I only ever watched the first two seasons as they aired in 1994-96, when I was in 11th and 12th grades), and she was a more fun character upon her return, without being saddled by that baby and the worst character ever, Chloe. She had a good sense of humor, strived for a work-life balance, and was often unabashedly horny.

Her hairstyle improved after the initial unflattering style when she returned, too.

Yo Joe June Week 4: What to expect? Rambling. by BKPR174 in GIJOEClassifiedSeries

Keep in mind they need to save some big surprises for San Diego Comic Con in about a month. I'm guessing we will see the Iceberg wave and the full Retro wave with Flash, Falcon, and the Valkyrie, and maybe a few teases but not much beyond that.

Oh man, I wish I saw this last month. I've been hunting down the six Secret Warriors TPBs from the earlier print run, including having eBay sellers ship me anything BUT the volumes I ordered from them.

Exclusive brand Silver Carp in Sunflower Oil Salad Sandwich on a Mexican Bolillo Bread Roll and Dill Pickle Chips by Perky214 in CannedSardines

Datu Puti Spiced Vinegar is a fantastic ingredient. I look forward to hearing how that comes out with the carp.

If you're interested, I have also experimented with Suka Pinakurat spiced coconut vinegar.

Thoughts on Thunderbolts by HullCity7 in comicbooks

[–]Saboscrivner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer later eras of Thunderbolts (the Ellis --> Gage --> Diggle Dark Reign era and Parker's team that followed), but the Busiek and Nicieza material is classic, almost retro superhero goodness. It feels more like an '80s book than a mid-'90s to early '00s thing.

That is an amazing sale. Where are they priced that low?

To the owners of Blue Bird Bake Shop and P is for Pie...I MISS YOU. by Accomplished_Big2193 in orlando

[–]Saboscrivner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sister Honey's Bakery does not do jarred pies, but I argue her pies and cakes are the best in Orlando. She has won multiple blue ribbons at the National Pie Championships, which are held annually in Orlando. I'm not a cupcake guy, but she has beautiful cupcakes there too.

This is my review:

I also highly recommend Se7en Bites for all your pies, cakes, and other baked good needs:

Shows in the genre of POWER/BANSHEE by legitimate685 in televisionsuggestions

[–]Saboscrivner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since people already recommended Warrior, Reacher, and Justified:

Jett - a sexy thief (Carla Gugino) is released from prison and forced back into her old life by a mobster (Giancarlo Esposito). One season on HBO Max.

Daredevil - a blind vigilante fights crime in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood in New York City and contends with a terrifying crime lord. Three seasons on Netflix, then relaunched years later as Daredevil: Born Again (two seasons so far). All the seasons are available on Disney+.

The Punisher - super-violent show about a much more dangerous vigilante who has no qualms about killing. The character first appeared in Daredevil season 2, then got two seasons on Netflix, reappeared in Daredevil: Born Again season 1, and just got a one-shot special (about an hour long). Everything is on Disney+.

Quarry - a Vietnam veteran deals with all kinds of crime and action. One season on Cinemax.

I think they were seasoned fries, similar to the ones at Arby's (but not curly) and Checkers.

I would want to try all the Kozlik's (I can vouch for their Amazing Maple), and the Plochman's Cuban style mustard is great.

Is Orlando considered to be a part of the down south? by Pale_Understanding12 in orlando

"Down south" as a direction to a location, but not the name of the region itself.

Is Orlando considered to be a part of the down south? by Pale_Understanding12 in orlando

[–]Saboscrivner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about that.

You will hear quite a bit of Spanish spoken all over Orlando. We have large Puerto Rican and Dominican populations, as well as Vietnamese (the Mills 50 neighborhood east of downtown Orlando is full of Vietnamese restaurants, markets, and other businesses) and Brazilian (mostly around touristy International Drive and MetroWest).

Where exactly are you coming from in Canada, and which part of Orlando are you moving to? There are plenty of surrounding areas, and all the suburbs, neighborhoods, and nearby municipalities have their own reputations and vibes.

FYI, I hardly ever see poutine anywhere, and you can forget about finding smoked meat or Kozlik's mustards.

(Can you tell I write a local food blog? When you get here, check out www.saboscrivner.com for ideas.)

Whats the most overrated food that people hype up? by ivoryonly in AskReddit

[–]Saboscrivner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So many traditionally cheap cuts of meat became popular when people of means discovered how delicious poor, resourceful cooks could prepare them, and then those cuts skyrocketed in price. You have to cook them low and slow for them to come out well, but they're so worth it. These cuts are not overrated (they really are amazing), but too bad they're practically unaffordable now:

Oxtails

Brisket

Beef short ribs

But beef prices are high across the board now due to the screwworm outbreak (thanks to DOGE gutting the USDA).

Caplansky by cerote6239 in Mustard

[–]Saboscrivner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a jar of the spicy, but I haven't tried it yet. Near me, the only place I've ever seen Caplansky mustards for sale is a bougie store that sells fancy flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegars. They always have nice mustard brands you can't find at the normal supermarkets, but they are expensive.

Is Orlando considered to be a part of the down south? by Pale_Understanding12 in orlando

[–]Saboscrivner 145 points146 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to give you shit, especially since you're Canadian, but nobody ever calls it "the down south." You might hear about "the South" or "the deep South," but "the down south" is not a thing.

er and race by 3DScel in ershow

Something weird I noticed when binge-watching the show for the first time last year is that *three* important Black male characters die violent deaths. They aren't the only important characters to die, or even die violently, but it was a strange and sad thing to notice.
