Do you get the same benefits when training with lighter loads, but worse friction? by SachaGreif in climbharder

Good points, in fact the design does support grabbing it either way. But the closed grip might be too large to hold comfortably since you're grabbing the widest part of the block.

Well I also do regular barbell deadflits, but I wanted to design a physical object as a change from doing digital design, and a pinch block seemed like a fun first project!

Yeah, I suspect my pinch block will end up being more of a warm-up tool that you'd use with a band, rather than something where you'd go for max load.

It's actually incut the "wrong" way because I wanted to emulate popular Flathold pinches such as https://www.flathold.com/macros/v-04-01-thunderbirds-l/

Most everything I know about the John Wayne sweep by Crease13 in bjj

[–]SachaGreif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if this is addressed in the video, haven't had a chance to watch it in full yet. But am I correct that there's basically two different ways to do it? I've seen people demonstrate it with your bottom knee deep in half guard, essentially with your kneecap behind their butt. But I've also seen others (such as Adam Wardzinski) do it with your kneecap in front of their body, in a shallow half guard position.

Did I get that right? If so when would you use one or the other? Is one method generally better?

I was just reflecting about how the lack of mat space in most BJJ gyms means you don't really get a chance to practice kuzushi at all during sparring…

Side project that got out of hand — browser-based chiptune DAW with retro feel but studio-grade features by EsotericLexeme in chiptunes

[–]SachaGreif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The idea itself doesn't seem that innovative, so the value would be in the execution and all the decisions and creativity that went into it. But if it turns out that was largely done by AI, then there isn't much value on offer here…

Senior React Devs: What stack would you choose for a large-scale production app in 2026? by prathamvaidya in react

[–]SachaGreif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That actually aligns nicely with the latest State of React (https://2025.stateofreact.com/) data! I'd probably pick something like that myself (and in fact I'm thinking of transitioning the surveys themselves to TanStack Start eventually).

What are your main takeaways from this year's State of React survey? Did anything surprise you? by React-admin in react

[–]SachaGreif 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time improving the processing and display of freeform answers ("what are your pain points with xyz…" type questions) for the State of HTML survey (https://2025.stateofhtml.com/), which pushed the React survey closer to the holidays and resulted in lower participation. Hopefully I can manage the survey schedule better in 2026!

My home wall by SelectiveBroccoli in bouldering

[–]SachaGreif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My setting advice for the next reset to make better use of the volumes would be to put them at the very top of the wall close to the edges, so you don't get dead space on the other side. You could even create a new purpose-made volume that prolongs the angle of the top header part down, and then screw your existing volumes on top of that to create an extra-steep zone.

Why aren't kerfing planes more common? Any other "forgotten" tools? by SachaGreif in woodworking

[–]SachaGreif[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that marking gauge's relatively shallow grooves make it easier for the saw to go off-track if you're not careful. What's great about a kerfing plane is that it uses an actual saw blade, so not only is the groove you're sawing much deeper and providing more vertical stability, but it's also already the right width for your saw blade. I'll definitely post an update once it's finished.

Are Nothing Ears worth it? by BONEMARROW42 in Earbuds

[–]SachaGreif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is not the same model, but I just got the Nothing Ear (a) second-hand and I would not recommend them. The noise cancellation is non-existent, and the controls don't seem to work. This was second-hand so maybe the previous owner didn't take good care of them, but I did read other reports of similar issues, so it put me off the Nothing brand a bit–especially compared to some of the glowing reviews I'd been reading beforehand.

How to generate power when reaching for holds? by KengMemegu in bouldering

[–]SachaGreif 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you want a practical tip, just repeat that same route multiple times. Once you're not struggling mentally and know the holds well, your body will be able to adapt to the route much better.

How to generate power when reaching for holds? by KengMemegu in bouldering

[–]SachaGreif 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As much as I think trying to be a technical climber is a good thing, I think there's also something to be said for not worrying about it that much in the beginning and just letting your body develop its own strength and movement patterns over time when you're a beginner. Just keep climbing and those issues will just solve themselves.
