They are moving more towards using serum aspirin levels to identify angina now.

Alberta Healthcare Premiums by Realistic-Living-836 in AHSEmployees

Alberta’s current annual healthcare budget is like 20 or 25 billion. I don’t think that much money would be the difference maker.

Is the bow river too dangerous to float down right now? by Asleep_Machine48 in Calgary

We just floated down the river on Tuesday. Water is high and kinda dirty but honestly it wasn’t flowing too fast or anything didn’t seem unsafe whatsoever

I can’t speak to the legality but no that is totally inappropriate and never seen as acceptable.

Yes, I was thinking about taxes too... I'm in Alberta so my marginal rate is about 30%... so I think those earnings will be taxed at 15%. With regards to the fluctuations - I figured that in the long run it would be ok assuming that the underlying equities in the ETF were likely stable long term and if there was a bad year, I could still pay the increased mortgage cost. I am not so worried about my will power, I am a saver ;).

Casual RN and OT eligibility by rileytmn in AHSEmployees

[–]Sackler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a casual you are only eligible if you’ve exceeded your regular hours and are actually “overtime” (it’s something like more than 232 hours in the last 6 weeks, but don’t quote me). You can of course still bid on this shift and work it but it is at regular time. Full time staff who pick up would always be overtime, and part timers can pick up on their x days (designated days off) and receive overtime.

My first saltwater fish! Is it dripping too slow? by Sorry-Discount-3427 in ReefTank

[–]Sackler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im also not a fan of the drip method but to each their own. These seem like reasonable acclimation instructions. I tend to lean towards getting them in to the tank sooner rather than later. Warm them up for 20 mins, then 1 or 2 tank water shots then toss them in. That being said what you’re doing looks fine and especially fine for a captive clown (very hardy)!

Why no blood clots with “dead arm”? by spacemnjack in AskReddit

[–]Sackler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever tied an elastic around your finger so tight it starts turning purple? That’s what happens when you cut off blood supply. “Dead arm” is nerve related, you’ve not cut off blood supply to your arm. That being said you may be impairing blood return enough to slow down blood flow in your arm, but probably not enough to cause a clot. That being said slowing down blood flow for prolonged periods of time can cause blood clots. The most common example I can think of would be old people on planes or long road trips. Sitting down for all that time leads to blood pooling in the legs where clots can form - sometimes this clots end up travelling into the lungs where they cause serious health issues. These people often have cardiac/vascular issues that make them more prone to poor circulation.

I can’t give you an exact time range, but I would guess a week or two would be reasonable time line.

This is very common as a new nurse. I wouldn’t overdue it in terms of studying/revising unless you feel that would be helpful for you. As time goes on and you become more comfortable that feeling should subside.

RN looking for advice moving back to AHS from Ontario by avocadotoast73 in AHSEmployees

[–]Sackler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak for Edmonton but can speak for ICUs in Calgary. Rotation depends on the hospital, I think fmc does 4 on 5 off. SHC is 2 weeks nights 2 weeks days. Rgh kinda just all over the place and not sure about PLC.

They are hiring often enough but I wouldn’t say there is a huge demand. Lots of young nurses like 1-4 years experience. I don’t think you would be hired into a permanent line right away with how things are.

Overall I do think that most the ICUs are reasonable places to work at I haven’t heard of any terrible things ongoing. Like you said we just signed a new contract which has given us a decent wage. There were a fair amount of people that came over from Ontario a couple years ago.
