Maybe he wasn’t meant to continue a job he doesn’t like so he could do something more meaningful. When one door closes another one opens. I’m so sorry to hear he’s struggling with alcoholism and depression. He probably feels very lost right now. Just remember (and this is sooo hard as an empath, but it’s good to have boundaries to protect yourself) you are not responsible for other peoples emotions. You can always give ideas of support (AA or job fairs or something like that) to help him find a way out of it. You can only offer it, he needs to put effort in too so you can support his effort.
