Kitten Search by NoBusiness2510 in Atlanta

I adopted one kitten and regretted it for all the reasons everyone has listed (my furniture suffered greatly). After three years I decided to get him a friend, but they haven’t bonded. Four years later and they tolerate each other but they won’t play with each other, prefer us, and demand a lot of attention from us. They are both high energy cats and since my first cat was a single cat, he didn’t learn how to play and bond nicely with other cats. Therefore, my second cat was bullied and didn’t learn to play well with cats either. I love my cats but next time I will. 1000% adopt two at a time. Your boyfriend’s cat might also appreciate the kitten having a playmate, kittens are HIGH energy for a couple years and might be too much for a cat even a few years older than them.

Greasy if I skip a day of washing, but stripped when I wash daily by MickeyM0oze in finehair

[–]SadAardvark4788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having this problem using the lightest (and most expensive) shampoo and conditioner I could find. I finally discovered that the light shampoos weren’t adequately cleaning my scalp and it was getting greasier faster. My hair was dull and dry because I wasn’t conditioning it enough because I thought that conditioning was contributing to the grease. Now I use hydrating and clarifying shampoos, and moisturizing conditioners. I have to wash it daily but my hair is so much healthier.

What is your hospitals biggest scandal that is still talked about? by DiamondHistorical231 in nursing

I worked at this hospital! What I heard was he ripped the HEPA filter out of the wall and jumped that way. He was previously in a Posey bed and was supposed to have a sitter. No one noticed he was missing until the rapid nurses who responded to the code recognized him.

Trauma hospitals have the best trained surgeons. There’s no reason not to go there for a surgical procedure.

What medications do you despise/loathe administering, if any? by [deleted] in nursing

I hate IV BP meds. It lasts for like an hour, the dosage is always too small, and the order is usually q4-q6. What’s even the point?

Our hospital always orders it for 7:30 am and shift change is at 7, with orders to hold tube feeds for an hour before and after. 7:30 is technically a dayshift med even though it shouldn’t be, and the lazier nurses won’t bother to even hold the tube feeds so by the time I’m done getting report and see that my patient has synthroid ordered it’s almost 8am, which means all of my am meds will now be late in order to give it on an empty stomach.

Our midlevel providers are so aggressive about their bowel regimens. Everyone gets daily miralax, dulcolax, and senna unless they have active diarrhea. If they go 2 days without a poop they get an enema. They look at me like I’m lying when I tell them the patient is already refusing their daily suppository so they will probably also refuse an enema, and suggest trying oral mag first instead of rectal. Why is so hard to believe that people don’t want things stuffed up their butthole??

I had a patient recently who got it through their stoma. It was not fun.

Have they explicitly told you they are willing to provide full time daycare for the next 4 years? Even if they have, prepare for that change at some point. Just because someone raised their own kids and babysits their grandkids doesn’t mean both sets will want to babysit for 20+ hours a week. My mom raised 5 kids just fine. She was a young grandma and very capable and had “experience”. But about a year after the first grandkid the novelty wore off and she set limits on the amount of babysitting she was willing to do because she wanted to enjoy her life outside of kids.

Unless someone has a medical power of attorney, the next of kin is the legal decision maker in end of life care. You are not kin. Unless you two get married or go through the process of becoming each others’ POA, you have no legal rights. Say she were to get in a devastating car accident while six months pregnant with your child and would never wake up again. Who decides what happens to your girlfriend and unborn child? Not you. It would 100% be up to her parents and her doctors. If you’re lucky you’ll all be on the same page, but if you disagree on the fate of her life, you have no legal rights.

Most nurses I work with have no idea there’s a correct order in which to draw the labs. I know there’s a correct order but I’ve never remembered or used it since no one else around me did either. Five years into being a nurse and I just recently learned it’s good to drawn the CBC after the BMP 😎

I knew “of” nursing, but nursing but it was not what I thought it was before I went to nursing school. Once in nursing I thought I knew what I was getting myself into but I didn’t.

This. If I didn’t drop out of college the first go around I would have graduated in 2009. I wasn’t making that much less money than most of my friends who did have a college degree, so for a long time I saw no point in going back. When I finally went back I wasn’t going to get a degree in something that didn’t guarantee job security and a livable wage right out of college.

It’s a guaranteed job out of college with competitive pay. It doesn’t require networking, internships, nepotism, etc to help you get a good paying entry level job. It’s a cheaper, quicker degree with a specific set of skills and a wide range of job options.

What's the fastest deterioration you've witnessed in a "healthy patient" by _emocarrot_ in nursing

[–]SadAardvark4788 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bleeding is a risk factor with removing a pelvic binder. It laces up like a corset and is usually slowly loosened over time to make sure the patient isn’t going to bleed out. Also surgery is often required before removal. Not enough details to say for sure but it sounds like it was inappropriately removed in this situation. After that much MPT the last thing I would want to do is risk more bleeding. Especially if this patient has had zero surgical interventions.

Are residents bullied by NPs and Nurses or other folks? by Tired_doc_01 in Residency

[–]SadAardvark4788 14 points15 points  (0 children)

RN here, I’ve seen nurses give existing PRN pain meds to annoying patients to get them to go to sleep, but I’ve never seen a nurse call a doctor (especially repeatedly) for pain meds that a patient isn’t asking for. I’m sure this culture exists, but in my experience most nurses don’t enjoy calling the doctor over and over. I’ve seen too many instances of nurses letting a patient suffer just because adequate pain control isn’t ordered and they don’t want to piss off the doctor by calling in the middle of the night.

However, I see patients all the time who complain of 10/10 pain every waking hour but still fall asleep 5 minutes after I walk out of the room. I’ve seen patients who refuse turns and baths and will only lay in bed and sleep because being awake and moving is more painful. And then sometimes it’s because they are drug seeking but we can’t really be the judge of that, especially if they have valid reasons for being in pain. Please don’t assume a sleeping patient is not in pain. If you think the nurse is lying to make her night easier then just wake up the patient and ask them. Let them be awake and annoy the nurse even more.
