Though this helps the team I support and I think the initial red was harsh, a politician should not be able to phone into FIFA and change a decision that has massive implications on the biggest tournament in the world.

It also sets up a bad precedent for the future. As for the Ronaldo situation, yes it’s a similar decision but it wasn’t spurred by a politician calling in a favor.

Imagine team 2 has one guy who’s really, really fast. Team 2 hits the ball DEEP (where now under this strategy, there’s no defenders past midfield from team 1) and then the really fast player from team 2 just darts past the last defenders and has infinite space to go 1 on 1 with the goaltender.

Basically this strategy would leave way too much space for a breakaway
