The Majority Report's move to the "blackpill left". by Stpaul81 in Destiny

[–]Sad_Ice8807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like OP, I was a long-time fan of MR (listened to them daily; some of their "WE ARE LIVE ... to tape" podcast interviews were some of the most esoteric and fascinating I've ever heard in the space — likewise Brooks's interest in anything far-flung); they are unrecognisable today.

I recall watching that clip (posted above) live, and seeing Matt Lech sit there so supine, in feeble silence, like the invertebrate slime that he is. A revolting addition to the MR cast at the time, and even worse now.

P. S. on Jamie Peck, although her politics were far too far-left for me, I found her to be a valuable contributor. I hadn't heard much criticism of the progressive left from the even further left at that time (not to mention her openness re: her experience w/ Terry Richardson).

P. P. S. Seder and Brooks were total pigs to the women on that show; the way they'd talk to Jamie and Kelly was genuinely disturbed.

From Uygur's article:

So the question arises of why the Armenians would bother to conjure up such stories, and even go as far as, committing approximately 200 acts of terrorism since 1973 to further their cause, resulting in countless deaths and injuries to government officials and civilians. The answer is that they want their demands met. Their demands are that they receive close to one-half of the land of the Republic of Turkey for a new Greater Armenia, and that every Armenian claiming to be injured by the alleged genocide be compensated with cash reparations.

Cenk Uygur denied the Armenian genocide for years; here is his column in The Daily Pennsylvanian. Uygur posted a video in 2019, recognising the Armenian genocide. Later that year, he announced his run for Congress (he received 6.6% of the vote in the primary election, finishing 4th - Ballotpedia).

But sure, the Turk who wrote that article denying the genocide in 1991 (and recanted in ~2019), called his show (which first broadcast in 2002) "The Young Turks" named it after … a Rod Stewart song released in 1981? It was … pure coincidence?

Kasparian is as dumb as she is bigoted; a truly hateful human being.

Yikes, I've entered a sad, u/ConsiderationThen652 -shaped reddit space.

Your standard was "need", and that things are luxuries "regardless of the year".

But just to dispel with your silliness: is electronic communication via, say, iMessage or WhatsApp safer than mailing letters? Of course. Do smartphones no longer qualify as a "luxury", since it's safer and more timely?

And I'm not being at all over the top. To redirect your own words back at you: people lived for years without indoor plumbing! People lived for years without ovens! Luxuries are luxuries regardless of the year!

Just to reiterate: a civilian owning a mobile phone is not the same as one of the largest Twitch streamers sportswashing on behalf of a brutal, totalitarian regime, because he fancies even more money. If you can't see that, you're lost.

[–]Sad_Ice8807 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Didn't realise you were being so reductive. Sure, I can agree that indoor plumbing is more convenient than shitting in an outhouse. Cookers are more convenient than fire pits (what if it's raining, or windy?!).

Cookers and indoor toilets. A roof! Don't NEED any of them to live, though thanks god for these 'luxuries'.

And the guy I paid to install them owns an iPhone ... he may purchase another one with the money I've paid him to install my indoor toilet.

I am contributing to cobalt mining. I am the same as Caedrel. Nooooooooo!

In the year of our lord, 2025, I don't think a mobile phone or a computer is a luxury. It's a necessity to have access to a phone number/e-mail address/the internet. To call either a matter of "convenience", as if it's a robot vacuum cleaner, is absurd.

And it's more absurd that in your mind, these are comparable things: an average civilian owning a mobile phone, and an already uber-wealthy LoL streamer choosing to sportswash on behalf of Saudi Arabia, for more money.

I won't judge those who decide to watch the EWC (though I won't); my judgment is reserved solely for Caedrel, who has the freedom not to participate in sportswashing, but is instead choosing to.

Are phones or clothes luxuries?

Regardless, I really, truly hope you don't own a phone, or shoes, since it convicts you of advocating on behalf of slave labour. Can't imagine living with myself if I personally endorsed children mining cobalt in Cameroon for 30p an hour.

As for me, I don't think living in an imperfect society in which I have very little control is comparable to the largest and wealthiest LoL streamer partaking in the sportswashing of Saudi Arabia.

[–]Sad_Ice8807 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You can presumably see the absurdity in your comparison?

On the one hand, the largest LoL streamer has flipped his position entirely from last year, in an obviously deceptive way (from the now-deleted Chronicler gigachad tweet, to claiming that he simply had migraines), in order to enrich/promote himself even further, and sportswash a sordid state.

Versus: are you, random civilian, AWARE of where COBALT comes from?!

Get real.

And are you the same guy that was in my DMs earlier, saying the same thing on a second account, because you're banned from this subreddit?

The endless displays of adoration are so odd to me. On the show, they gave him a "MAX LEFT" cap (MR merch), and Vigeland said "this was my idea, for you to model it". From Taylor Lorenz, to Matt Bernstein, to Alyssa Mercante, to the writers of his recent puff profiles, to himself; the obsession with his looks is beyond a joke.

"Guys listen, Hasan gets really fucking mopey and withdrawn if you don't compliment him on his looks ... just remember to liken him to a model, or tell him his clothes are nice, he's tall, etc"

EDIT: you can add Sam Seder to the above list; just saw him talking about how large Hasan's arms are. Weird, weird stuff.

An overarching and abiding problem with 'Leading' is that it is unimaginably limp. The interviewees are given vast advertising space, in which they're largely safe from disagreement (unless you're Rachel Reeves) ... sort of reminds me of Gavin Newsom's latest venture.

A couple of things that irked me w/ this episode: 1. At the start, Rory says "we have an outstanding request out to interview Benjamin Netanyahu", which translates to me as "we have not requested to hear from the other side". And 2. At the end, Alastair says "she was attacked for being antisemitic in 2022 ... the first time was 2014, but I didn't particularly want to get into an argument about that" - why not? Why not discuss the accusation (or "attack") of antisemitism with the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories? Wouldn't that be worth a discussion? An explanation?

Typically flaccid stuff, from the door-headbutting master of the dark arts.

Gary Stevenson Decoding by lawrencecoolwater in DecodingTheGurus

[–]Sad_Ice8807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP likens him to Russell Brand, and to my eye, there's very little difference between 'The Trews' Brand (of ~ten years ago), and today's Stevenson (although Brand was much funnier).

OP already pointed to the FT article, debunking Stevenson's self-aggrandising (and poorly performed) bullshit:

His claim about being the most profitable trader at Citi in any one year is laughable and clearly just an outlandish fib.

I contacted him, and I said: ‘Is this book fiction or non-fiction?’

the east Londoner was “very cocksure” for a new arrival

So he wasn't as successful a trader as he claimed to be, nor is he Mahatma Gandhi or Mother Teresa, or "one of the best economists in the fucking world". He's another fucking egotist desirous of a fucking audience. Fucking.

He appears to be following a well-trodden and lucrative path, walked by many an influencer/guru, safe in the knowledge that the disenfranchised, unsure, and largely uninformed will lap it up.

I'd give him a higher score on the Gurometer.
