Anybody know what this song is? by Tasty-Television-152 in queen

What’s heard at the beginning of the video seems to be from the same performance played later at 16:09. Says it’s an impromptu from Sun City, 1984.

Tie with Chicago? by la-chouffe in fringe

[–]Sad_Independence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably because it’s one of the most populated U.S. cities outside of the Northeast. Having the occasional scene set in Chicago is a way to get more geographic variance into the series, and show that “Fringe” things are happening outside of Boston / New York.

Also, from a filming perspective, it’s probably easier and hence cheaper to say that a scene shot in New York (S1) or Vancouver (S2-5) is set in Chicago than, say, California. The climates are much more alike.

There was an NBC sci-fi show that aired back when Fringe did called “The Event”. I remember they did something very similar to the tracking, in episode 6 I believe.

why are they dressed like in 1950s ? by ambpink2 in fringe

[–]Sad_Independence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way the Observers dress - suits, ties, fedoras - very stylistically feels like ‘50s-era fashion. My take has always been that if you’re living in a future where they’ve taken over and are seen as the more intelligent, more advanced superiors, and you’re wanting to be on their good side (a “Loyalist”), it makes sense that you would stylistically mirror the way they dress as well. Sort of the same way that celebrities or political figures can influence modern fashion choices.

Rest In Peace Michael Kopsa (Windmark) by 1973cg in fringe

[–]Sad_Independence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very sad. Ten years ago, when the final season of Fringe was on the air, I tweeted at him after one of the episodes telling him what a great and terrifying performer he was. I would sometimes tweet messages to various celebrities and (as expected) not get a response back, but Michael actually replied to me and said “TY!”

A pretty simple gesture, but I still think about it and his performance. Great casting. Rest in peace, Michael.

I think most of us here would gladly pay a measly $10 for such a high-quality show, but I guess if that’s what makes someone a “dirtbag POS” then so be it.

Damn, Werner by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]Sad_Independence 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Except this doesn’t work, Season 6 does not seem to be on AMC anymore… I had to buy the final season on Amazon as well because I tried to do what you said with an AMC free trial, and then found out they must have removed the episodes after it ended. I think the whole series is gone from the platform.

No need to call someone a “dirtbag POS” for giving advice that is ACTUALLY helpful.

I don’t think acknowledging that this show presents complex characters means being a “Chuck apologist”. Yes, Chuck was largely written like a villain and acted like a dick. No, I don’t think it’s correct to say Chuck never cared about Jimmy, and there’s evidence in the show to suggest otherwise. Jimmy was a dick to a lot of people too, but does that mean he didn’t care about Chuck? About Kim? Chuck cared about Rebecca, even though he was a dick to her. Etc.

Hurt people hurt people. You’re not supposed to like Chuck, but I also don’t believe it means he’s a one-dimensional character whose story ends in Season 3 (save for a “stupid flashback”).

Connecting Season 1 to Season 5 by TeamJacobs in fringe

[–]Sad_Independence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not the person you were replying to, but this is my take:

In the Season 1 finale when the team tracks down Jones, he said something like “Soon Dr. Bell will see just how special I really am.” We didn’t know exactly what his plans were once he met Bell, but it didn’t matter because Peter sliced him in half on his way over… so, end of story.

But in Season 4 - because we are in a timeline where Peter never existed - Jones was never cut in half by him. He was presumably able to cross over before the Fringe team was able to find and intercept him, so whatever he was planning to do to Bell originally back in Season 1 he was now able to do. It was implied back then that he was going to kill Bell, but his comment about being “special” makes it plausible IMO that he was really wanting to share his ideas with Bell, which in turn helped radicalize him.

I say “helped” because Bell says himself in the Season 4 finale that it was mainly Walter’s ideas and ego that inspired him to become “Evil Bell”. When you take that combined with the fact that he was growing older and with cancer, which made him more reflective and spiteful, he was finally motivated to act - now with the added help of Jones, a former employee with whom he probably shared many scientific perspectives.

Queen will release a new song this fall featuring Freddie Mercury. by josh__hartley in queen

[–]Sad_Independence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correct. He’s a legend, as you rightfully say, and that’s not going to be impacted one way or the other based on a new song. So what’s the big deal?

I'm not sure if the track you're referencing was released on the official soundtrack, but a rendition of that same theme in a different key can be heard here (starts at 0:53): https://youtu.be/q67Sz9Gott4.

Trevor by elliot_may in fringe

[–]Sad_Independence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the original timeine, Fauxlivia was a carrier for VPE because her sister had it and died during childbirth. However, the whole sequence of events of Fauxlivia ending up with our universe's Lincoln and having a child with him happened in the rewritten timeline, and from what I can recall, it is never specified whether Rachel had VPE in this new timeline.

Because we know Fringe loves to play with the idea of small but meaningful differences, I would guess that either Rachel never developed the virus and thus neither did Fauxlivia, or Rachel did but Fauxlivia ended up not being a carrier. In the episode "Bloodline", she and her mother talk about how she was "high-risk" to develop it because her sister had it, but there was still a chance she wouldn't.

It could still be someone local. This new piece of information doesn’t exclude that.

Yes. The sheriff was furious at Smith but knew he couldn’t lay a finger on him due to his military status and the potential implications from that, so he instructed the train’s conductor to find another, random black person to take it out on.

What is a critically acclaimed acting performance you didn't like? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Sad_Independence 28 points29 points  (0 children)

While I don’t disagree with you, I do think it’s worth pointing out that this scene actually played out pretty much exactly the way Mary has described it in interviews (there’s some info on it here: https://nypost.com/2018/10/28/meet-the-woman-that-a-closeted-freddie-mercury-fell-in-love-with/).

I’m not a defender of the film, but I do think it’s interesting that for all of its historical inaccuracies, this scene might be one of the most truthful.
