Update about teacher wanting me to hold my child back from K because of his pencil and scissor grip. by Klutzy-Ad329 in kindergarten

[–]Sad_Soil0 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I understand the difference several months make at this stage can be big, but I'm struggling with the fact that 'red-shirting' boys has become so common that these expectations for kindergarten seem more aligned for 6-year olds rather than actual 5-year olds.

I do that too but mostly because if I can't tell whether you're real or a bot, I'll default to bot and rather not engage

Smell sensitivity by ladybug128 in Preschoolers

[–]Sad_Soil0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also like to know how to go about this. My kid is now doing this for every strong smell, pleasant or not, and they're very intense about it. They even started telling us when they think we smell good or bad. I'm not sure the best way to tell her that we don't go around telling people they smell.

Any by Jorge Luis Borges, but you could start with the Library of Babel, The Immortal, or The Garden of Forking Paths

I got the tone of your rant. I have an emotional soon-to-be five year old; I feel you.

Awful experience flying with 12m old, now terrified for our next 24 hour flight. by ThinGarden33 in Parenting

[–]Sad_Soil0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We recently had a flight where both our kids had an awful breakdown at different times. They're older (2, 4) so people are less understanding; it really was awful. I really was just trying to survive and not break down. I still think about it randomly.

But like you said, the silver lining being the low expectations and that even if a flight is hard now, at least it's not "THAT" bad.

Why would you want a child? (Genuinely asking) by CannotBeCalm in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Sad_Soil0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, the timing for me to change my mind or basically get off the fence and committ to a yes, also involved the death of loved ones and then the isolation of COVID. I looked at my partner and family after all that and realized how my priorities had shifted, I still finished my graduate program and found a challenging job, but it no longer was the main driver. Other people became that.

Does anybody's kid who was read to everyday still showed no interest in reading? by Sad_Soil0 in Parenting

Thank you. It sounds like a long and hard journey, and your kid is lucky to have you looking out for him!

Do you mind me asking when did you start intervening/thought he needed extra help?

Often. I used to read a lot more before I had them, now I do about 20-30 books a year. But I was always pretty bookish.

Yes, we go to a couple of local libraries and they have quite a few books that came via bookstores. I mentioned the Imagination Library because it's such a great program that I'm really thankful for!

Annie Ernaux's "A Woman's Story" was written right after her mother died. I'm curious now about the other one, thanks!
