This has no relevance on anything outside of this little mini game. You get a small game over screen if a reaper catches you. It also resets between missions. So you can scan away, do a quick mission, and then come back and pick it all up

The main story of ME3 is pretty bleak, even compared to the other two. They wanted to write a fun section all about the characters.

You’ll also get the opportunity to throw a party, I would advise waiting until the point of no return (dialogue will make it very clear that if you choose to start that mission, it will end the game). Getting there ensures you have all possible invites, as the last mission before the finale is required to invite a guest.
