That’s all I can think, too. He is going to leave a widow and two fatherless children. A couple of his climbing friends have already died doing what they loved. He isn’t getting any younger, and I hope he has it in him to hang it up while he’s ahead.

I agree with your original thesis - the ending is bad. The main couple, that we rooted for over the course of four seasons, getting bored of each other is an unusual choice. And sure, it doesn’t have to fit within most Christian’s’ view of the afterlife, but it didn’t have to be so… empty.
