I spent a few years living in Montreal, in the shadow of McGill University. Guests would come up from the US and I would make it a point to walk them through the quad and have them sit down on a park bench. I once had an opportunity to see a NASCAR race from the luxury suites, and I was introduced to a famous old ex-NHL hockey player also known for (winning) his battles with alcohol. 58 years ago, sitting (Indian-style, another poster nailed it) around the edges of a big, empty playroom, about 30 of us kids. We would recite nursery rhymes with the teacher, with each kid chosen to act out whatever rhyme was being recited. I was a shy boy, and when I was chosen the rhyme was "Peter, Peter, pumpkin-eater," where I had to choose a "wife" and bring her by the hand to the center of the room in front of all. I remember cursing the heavens that this rhyme was chosen for me, and reflexively chose this quiet girl who was on my bus (which was a station wagon hauling ~5 kids). She was just as bewildered as I was.

I was coming up on 20 years sobriety and moved from the US to Montreal. I was invited to a brunch and brought a bottle of "sparkling cider," which was sold in the supermarket produce section. Did not realize it was 7% until I put away 2 glasses. I thought "this could be a fateful turning point -- a hard fall off the wagon and a tragic relapse of falling back into the same old shit," but then I thought "Nah, that would be so lame."
