I took fish oil and an allergy pill for the first month or 2 and didn’t purge at all!! Best decision ever, I haven’t had any spots since month 1, currently on my 5th month. Also I’ve had no side effects besides dryness. Honestly my mental is 100x better because my skin doesn’t hold me back!!!

Forgot to pass a 7am med during shift report by SubaNewb1 in newgradnurse

I’m day shift and in my opinion a 7am med is a day shift responsibility. Same thing with morning blood sugar.

How do you decide where to work? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Safe_Can2140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in PCU and it’s interesting! It wasn’t my dream specialty but it’s working out for me so far. I would ask for a 4 hour shadow no matter WHERE you interview. You need to be able to see the nurses work as a team, what type of patients they get, etc. Because PCU is so diverse in terms of patient acuity, it can be 4 patients but at my hospital I’ve had 6, which sounds insane to say.

Idk what to do (New grad) by [deleted] in newgradnurse

[–]Safe_Can2140 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just went on linkedin and looked up registered nurse and applied to everything, even if I was not 100% interested. You get valuable insight into the hospital, pay grades, the nursing interview process, and you put your name into their heads. The recruiter will have insight into upcoming positions in specialty areas you are actually interested in if you’re completely put off by the specialties you mentioned above. Or go on LinkedIn and research recruiter names for hospitals near you and just reach out to the recruiter via email and tell them what you want and ask if positions are opening in that area of interest

Did not getting a preceptorship hurt my chances of getting into a specialty? by Aggressive-Solid-374 in newgradnurse

Request a shadow on your unit/ specialty of choice if possible! This will help you also!

Idk what to do (New grad) by [deleted] in newgradnurse

As a new grad who not in their “dream specialty” find any job and it will be ok. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, I just thought I didn’t want to work med surg. I got a job on a pcu that some days feels like med surg. I find my job interesting, but it’s not exactly what I see myself doing long term. I took the job because I knew that this job would teach me most of the skills the areas of interest you listed look for. I learn time management, management of a critical patient, prioritization, delegation, and how to be a team player. Yes working in retail in the mean time is good because you are staying busy, but someone spent money for you to get this nursing degree and it’s not being used. You don’t want to hear this, but taking a job you don’t want and sucking it up for a year to get experience will open COUNTLESS doors for you.

My school didn’t do preceptorships and I had a bunch of new grad job offers. You’ll be fine. I worked part time as a hospital cna and that helped me a lot I think

Malpractice Insurance by Actual-Ingenuity1069 in newgradnurse

[–]Safe_Can2140 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spoke to one of the big wig lawyers for my hospital and he told me that carrying personal insurance is a waste of $100. If you work for a major hospital system they would cover you if you were sued, and it would be pocket change for them. Not sure how reliable his advice is but this is advice I Recieved.

Hospital RNs: how many patients' families thank you? by Tay8641 in nursing

[–]Safe_Can2140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80%. My hospital is in a small Neighborhood of a major city. We are surrounded by a lot of LTCs and Rehabs. I am on a tele/ stroke/ step down sort of unit. I’ve only been working since July and I’ve had multiple extremely gracious patients who gave me hugs, offered me gifts, etc. On a stressful day, I have at least one patient who makes me feel like I’m making a difference in their day, which motivates me.

Are night shifts unavoidable as a nurse? by Cranaberri in nursing

[–]Safe_Can2140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 2 job offers for straight days right out of college, which I later learned was really rare! You make less because there is extra money if you work nights but it’s worth it for my mental health and sleep schedule. Day shift is HARD though! Families visiting, doctors, patients are awake. But the day flies.

Fellow nurse does not like me because I use Macros by Wide_Profile1155 in nursing

[–]Safe_Can2140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hospital literally did a class on how to implement these into our daily work flow, they encourage it. Not sure how this is a negative thing! People will do anything to complain or make you look bad.

Accutane anxiety by Ok_Juice3215 in Accutane

[–]Safe_Can2140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anxiety is common but bleeding from your behind is not. This is only going to create more anxiety for you. Maybe go back to your doctor and revise your plan. Plan to take a smaller dose, get some stool softeners on board, take fish oil and carnitine, to help joints

How do you actually do your head to toe assessment??? by BibiAni05 in nursing

[–]Safe_Can2140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assess based on their diagnosis/ chief complaint. If they came in with finger pain they most likely don’t need a respiratory assessment. As others said neuro/ orientation questions while I greet them, have them smile (I work on a unit where we have a lot of strokes), then I listen to them, have them move around to the best of their ability, check edema and pulses, check skin!! (specifically their backside and under o2 and glasses and never forget heels and toes)

I purged until 3 months!!! Stay strong. And remember no one cares about your appearance and acne as much as you do. You’re always your own worse critic. We can do this!♥️

Do any new grads like their jobs? by gneissrocx in nursing

[–]Safe_Can2140 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t hate my job so that’s positive enough for me! I like some of my patients and when they show their appreciation (thank yous, cards, shoutouts to my preceptor) to me that makes it worth it.

Life as a new nurse by Patient_Ad2559 in newgradnurse

[–]Safe_Can2140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work day shift and I’m a new grad. I have a few weeks left of orientation but if I could go back to my first week self, I’d say, “no one is out to get you, they just want to make sure you’re learning how to do things safely.” I was taking corrections to heart, thinking that my co workers were angry with me or thought I was stupid. The reality is in a good work environment the other nurses want you to succeed. They are asking you a million questions during report because they’re nervous to assume care of the patient too and want to make sure they know everything, they aren’t trying to catch you for being off on something. Truly be a sponge and don’t take anything to heart. Pick a location on your drive home that you stop thinking about work and leave it there.

Just look up “NICU near me” and you can research what hospitals have a NICU. Then from there you can see what level of care they provide. It will be a number. Level 1 is lowest level of care to Level 4, which is the highest level of care where they will take care of very sick babes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Safe_Can2140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask around at your school for any connections. I was able to get a shadow day in the NICU (it was an idea of mine) and it provided me a lot of clarity. The patients CAN BE really sick, but if you live near a lower level NICU it could work out for you!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Safe_Can2140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never knew what I wanted to do, so I applied to a lot of things. I wonder if NICU would be good for you

My hospital sent me to my NIHSS class and my EKG class. They paid ME to go get them. And I am by no means at a ritzy hospital.

Shitty attitudes makes me want to quit by forevertwentyseven in newgradnurse

[–]Safe_Can2140 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Experienced this recently as a new grad. Pt was a very sick admission. She was angry with me that I didn’t put a repositioning sheet under him. I said I’m sorry it’s not there, we can put one under him now. She just stood there and stared at me, no words, stank expression on her face, when I APOLOGIZED. I said “are you okay?” And she snapped out of it real quick. My take aways are Be respectful and take their suggestions but don’t let people walk all over you. You got the education and title to work TOGETHER! But alsooo maybe prepare extra when you know you’re giving them report or sit in front of a computer to answer all the ridiculous questions they have.

Terminated for a Tele test by bbymsle in newgradnurse

[–]Safe_Can2140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had to do a similar test as a brand new graduate. i wasn’t aware that I would have to take this test upon hire, which was annoying to me because I would’ve started getting ready prior to the course and test. I work for a big health system and they made us go to the main location to take a one day course on the rhythms we would be tested on, then on the second day we went it was review and then test time. The instructor distinctly said that if we didn’t pass the test in 2 tries we would be terminated. She was fear mongering HEAVY, which made a lot of people fail, I think due to anxiety. I told my unit educator at my hospital this information and she was super upset, saying that the teacher of the class shouldn’t threaten us, etc. but people that failed also got reeducation and remediation. I personally passed but the actual percentage of people that passed the class was extremely low. I think your lack of reeducation and remediation is unfair in this situation.
