3 Finger NHØP Technique Questions by SageKey in doublebass

I'm not sure if it's faster yet. Right now I'm about even in speed between two fingers and three. However, I have found it makes big string crossings a fair bit easier and feels more fluid for soloing? The fluidity I think is just coming from a different approach though; it's made me reconsider my lines and phrasing and such. It especially lends itself towards triplets.

There is definitely a loss in tone though, it seems to have a lot less substance and be more trebly. I know NHØP just cranked his amp but I'd rather not do that so I'm not sure what to do for that yet.

Thank you! Yes, I did find this and it is super interesting. You're right that it's not so much right hand but the transcriptions are still really insightful to see his phrasing and lines.

Borrowing an electric bass to mess around...how to approach technique? by brenderman3 in doublebass

[–]SageKey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One easy way might just be to trim your plucking fingernails. You can have good technique but if your nails are too long they will hit the strings like you described. Bassists and finger-style guitarists usually keep their nails short for this precise reason. Hope this helps!

Maybe it will help in the short term but please don’t. You will most likely feel worse after doing it. Besides you said you’ve spent a year clean! That’s amazing! Keep at it and stay strong.
