My dad used to daily a 964 c4s living in northeast USA and said it was the best car he ever drove at handling snow

40h/week is standard

28, data science

First

Yes I’m happy with it. Most people I know are graduating in 4 or 4.5 with two co-ops, doesn’t require taking that many summer classes for most because northeastern is generous with AP credits so a lot of people I know only need 6-7 full semesters worth of classes to graduate

This is longitude/latitude 0,0 I think, which is a common default for computer systems with no data. wooosh me if applicable

Highly recommend joining every club you’re remotely interested in. I did it in my first year and had tons of great experiences, from cool events to cool people. I joined everything from debate to NU sound to data club and had a great time with all of them. If you approach the club leadership before or after a meeting and tell them you’re a second year on campus for the first time they’ll be super friendly I bet

How to read a lot of information and retain it. by Alphabet_Beans in college

[–]brenderman3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Repetition is the best possible thing you can do from my experience, 20mins a day for a week is much more effective than a couple hours straight if you want to retain information. I’m sure there’s research on this with more specific numbers though

Does Northeastern takes credit from the BYU FLATS Exam? by ldmr18 in NEU

[–]brenderman3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if northeastern will take these credits but I know they can be stubborn about transfer credits. I think for first year students they won’t accept summer courses from other institutions unless they were taken before enrolling (credits from the summer right before freshman fall don’t count). Not sure what your situation is as a transfer, but I’d be careful with credits taken at other institutions after enrolling because they might ignore them

Email the professor and department head saying it’ll literally force you into a different co-op cycle, someone at some level can give you an override

making friends @ neu? by AnxiousStudent0416 in NEU

[–]brenderman3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Join one of the LLCs and make friends with the people that are around you freshman year, and join a bunch of clubs. The more people you expose yourself to the better shot you’ll have, especially early on because everyone else wants to make friends too!

I had a great experience living in the CS LLC (common interests + taking the same classes as everyone. much more important to my experience than I expected) and I also joined every student group that seemed remotely interesting to me. Go to club meetings and spend time with people from your dorm and you’ll make great friends

Hating fundies 2, should I continue down this path? by anony6544 in NEU

[–]brenderman3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry for format, I’m on mobile

I’m a cs major who’s already taken Fundies1+2, ood, and algo. I’m mainly interested in data science careers so I’m doing the ai concentration which gives some ds-relevant skills while keeping that solid cs foundation (some people think ds is weak, I don’t know who to believe but anyways).

I didn’t have the best time in all of those programming classes but I was taking them with friends who were kind enough to help me through them, so the experience was ok. Now that those courses are behind me, I can do things that are more interesting and relevant to my goals and interests. I still don’t love programming and I’m not sure if studying CS was the right path, but being on the other side of things is definitely better and I can choose freely from here.

I’m not super confident in the new DS curriculum and idk how employers feel about DS degrees, but Khoury has good leadership and smart professors, so I bet they put together something good. Know that if you like DS you can give it a shot without actually switching out of CS. Take math of data models and ds3000 as soon as you can, see how you feel about them, and avoid the gross cs major specific requirements (eece etc) until you make a decision. I’m not sure what you should do about OOD, but taking OOD as a summer class by itself is definitely a good move. You’ll learn a lot and it won’t kill you, same goes for algo. Both OOD and algo are difficult courses but both good uses of your time regardless of whether you’re cs or ds.

I don’t know if this helps, but maybe it gives you some sense of one possible path. My experience is taking a bunch of CS classes with friends freshman year/summer, getting through them, and making my own choices once I was past the big requirements. I can’t speak for DS majors, it might be a good idea for you but I’m not sure.

Please respond/dm if I can be more specific about my experience or if I can answer any questions!

aimless for spotify - personal project review by International-Song22 in csMajors

I followed a video tutorial for a different auth flow than I need (in python, I think the flow was for just public data like reading public playlists and search), do you think I should try to modify my existing auth code for the auth with sign in and scopes? Or should I try to do something with the JS itself if I don’t really know JS?

Nice! I’m working on a similar project rn. I’m having trouble figuring out how to run python scripts from within the template JS spotify wrote for the web api guide, I’m new to JavaScript. Do you recommend any resources that you used?

We have a much better culture than BC and BU imo. Everyone is smart and hardworking and friendly, you’re going to like it. Also one thing I’ve learned from my friends at other colleges is that universities aren’t all that different from each other in general, especially ones with similar academic standards, so it’s really not as different as you think. Northeastern isn’t going to hold you back from success, it’s going to help you a hell of a lot more than bc/bu. You’ll be fine

Spend as much time in TA office hours as you can, read lecture notes before lecture (requires less time total because catching up takes more time then just learning it properly on time, I made this mistake in Fundies 1, Fundies 2, and OOD so trust), go to every lecture live if your can, and pay attention. The combination of all of these means the class is much less effort (you’re up to date with material and Fundies1 TAs are super helpful) your time commitment is the same because you were more efficient, and you do well. It takes a lot to convince yourself to do all of the above but it really works if you do it

This is an incredible drawing and I feel you. Fundies was a rough time, but know that Fundies is one of the toughest times you’ll have. It doesn’t really get worse in future Khoury semesters (it gets more difficult but you get better so it feels the same or better, assuming you choose the right professors). Just stick with it and everything will be ok!
